For the Mega Joy with no signal, try hooking the audio to a stereo or small speaker to see if there is any audio at all. That way you'd at least know if the processor was running. There should be background music or game select sounds. That crystal controls the PAL video output but is not a standard frequency common for NES. Try testing on a small analogue CRT set or RF modulator to see if there is any kind of video at all. Many new LCD TV sets are not very forgiving with imperfect signals and just completely bock the signal with their "no signal" screen.

36:58 You're right there. These are called "glop tops" they're a very cheap way of creating chips, and they're un servicable unfortunately. These are very common in these old handhelds and cheap systems. 39:22 That is a clock crystal. You'll see these on lots of older systems, like the megadrive or the nes or old systems in general. They're used to run the processor of the system at a certain speed frequency, in this ones case, it runs at 25.5 Mhz, as you can see on the side. These almost never fail, so I wouldn't be expecting that to be a fault That Firecore red portable megadrive is really nice, other than the not so great sound, they're a really good way of playing megadrive games portably, as they even have an SD card slot so you can put all sorts of megadrive games on of your choice :) What's nice about those is they don't really use emulation, they use a FPGA chip, which basically replicates the system on a hardware level, rather than doing it in software, which means they can be much more effecient and accurate.

Hey dude I know this is an older video but I wanted to make a comment on it. I've been watching your videos for a couple months now as I stumbled upon them. I kind of envy you! :-) I used to do this kind of stuff back in the 80s and 90s. I used to get Commodore 64 VCRs handheld games stereos Etc just to do the kind of stuff you're doing and reselling them. People would just give me the stuff because it was broken and it wouldn't work and I enjoyed getting it working just like you're doing. :-) Of course that was back many years ago that I haven't did it in a long time. But watching your videos is has inspired me to get back into it. Since I started watching your videos I've searched and searched on ebay for deals like this or auctions like that, and all I am finding is basically just watches. Or if I do find any broken electronic stuff they want a extreme fortune for them or just the shipping alone is way too high. I think maybe because I am in US, you are having better luck in the UK! :-) So I really envy you that you're finding all the deals!! :-)

Very nice fix video again Vince with a pretty good result indeed. Glad to see your tools and gadget gradually improving like the multimeter and the component testing gadget.

With the Mega Joy you could test with the board outside of the housing, the shell itself could be the fault and maybe a little trimming around the edges would aid in making better contact for the A/V cable.

Those capacitors that you say are showing as resistors, those are failed capacitors. The 20P and 50P markings are almost certainly value markings of 20 picoFarads and 50 picoFarads. If the bad ones are meant as decoupling capacitors, then the game will *probably* run fine with them removed, at least as a further test.

the poor quality of devices like this mean a massive amount of them arrive at the shops dead anyway and so a lot of the repairs are just putting right what the factory should of done from the start like using better grade solder, thicker gauge cabling etc. great video as always vince :)

Thanks to your videos, I've had the confidence to attempt to replace my original DS's screen. I ended up wearing out one of the wires soldered to the one of the speakers, and accidentally broke a tiny piece of plastic off, but the outer top shell can be replaced easily enough. Thanks for inspiring me to try to fix things myself, even if I botched my initial attempt. I'll give it another go one of these days. Cheers!

just FYI most of the "plug and plays" I have found are made by a company called Jakks Pacific. The blob tops are called "chip-on-board" if you search for that it will show you how they are made. The epoxy blob seals them to keep them from being exposed.

Even for cheap fake consoles with emulated games £13.00 is a really good deal i can see them been a lot fun to play or a decent gift for a child or someone else that might like playing handheld games.

Another great video vince well done on the repairs, maybe its worth adding some links too the tools you are using, it looks like you have some new test equipment etc as a lot of us do these type of repairs on a budget the links may come in handy.

39:02 I think those 2 capactors in MEGA JOY shouldn't test as resistors. 20P most likely means 20pF capacity capacitor.

Nice easy fix on that first one . Just a suggestion but with that switch there are four tabs holding it together . they probably make the contacts connect . Might have been an idea to tighten them down so they clamped it tighter

yes that metal can is crystal oscillator and in most of the cases on cheap video consoles this is the faulty part, when you change it just make sure you put one whith the same frequency ;) anyway you bought component tester that i recoment ... nice! Now the last part of your tools colection wil be desoldering gun (yes gun not pump) it will help you to desolder every truehole component clean like a boss :)

Check the xtal on the mega joy with a scope. It's for the CPU clock. Xtals do break when dropped.

the bulging batteries look like dsi batteries, but if you take one of them to one of those market stalls that sell mobile phone batteries and chargers they will have a replacement. the cheapo handhelds usually take either ds, dsi, or nokia batteries they are dirt cheap to replace.

Fun fact: all of those bootleg consoles (besides the Nintendo 64 controller) are actual SEGA genesis consoles, or Megadrives on a little chip, no emulation with any of them. The Nintendo 64 controller has a NOAC (Nintendo On A Chip), meaning it has a Nintendo Entertainment System on a little chip. Just something interesting you might like.

Hi Vince I have the mega joy had same issue on nine didn't open it just used external power instead now works fine without batteries

I found a boxed Power Player Super Joy III which looks like the Mega Joy, came with a light gun and GEN/MD style 2PL controller FYI. Mostly with the first INTV clones they were absolutely not like the original to the point of being pointless. Hard to fix such things, by default any repair of them puts more money into them than the original unit had from the start often. Failure in the power switch seems to be common to handhelds regardless of quality, guess they corrode and fill with dirt easily.

Dude I save these all the time. Soak these (on the board with vinegar frirst) no need to desolder the switch, then hit them with deoxit. I've saved literally hundreds of gameboys this way. Stupid simple. I've even soaked entire mobos (bad battery acid damage) in a bowl of vinegar for 30-60 minutes. Afterwards hose off vinegar with hot water, thourghly dry it then hit it with deoxit. SERIUOSLY Ive fixxed HUNDREDS UPON HUNGREDS this way. It works

The component you referred to "being simular to a component on a radio controlled unit", is a crystal, crystals vibrate at various natural frequencies that can be dampened or excited to vibrate "Yes Vibrate" at a desired frequency, to which that frequency can provide a cycle that can be referenced for timing purposes Eg: clock or in this case computer timing functions such as what all computer games need for stable and predictable results in the control of data.. Oy this is hard to explain, but essentially for each cycle or half cycle a circuits cycle provided by the crystal, allows an input by user, and on the next half or full cycle an out put is acted upon by the circuit. thus a "flip flop" "IC" or "Integrated circuit" is usually is not far away from a crystal, and if the crystal has a electrolytic capacitor near it, I like to change it out automatically, BUT and I stress BUT only if whatever device is over 5 years old..

that silver thing is as you assume a crystal, Every electronic device, needs one in order to operate, its basically the clock. that hand held is running at 25HZ/Mhz In modern electronic devices the crystals are generally incorporated in the chips, rather than a seperate crystal.

Those old N64 Power Joy-type NES clones were always extremely unreliable even when new. They had a very unfortunate tendency to fail when plugged into the TV.

😀Hi Vince, the PXP3 usually have 2 carts with them to swap game menus, even though all the games are held on the machine itself. This guy shows a very simple mod that eliminates the carts and still allows access to all games, here's a link to the video, it's only 10mins kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bN-net1m27_WpJc.html. As for the battery, I believe they are Nokia standard-- something like BP-6 or BP-7, sorry can't recall exactly on those. Great result for a tenner on this lot tho 👍👌😀

Are your videos sped up slightly or do you naturally move in such swift and precise motions? I'm not sure if that makes any sense, lol. Just makes me think all that hand-eye coordination from growing up a gamer caused you to develop the talent you have with electronics repair.

the crystal in that n64 controller thing is a crystal for the processor under one of those blobs. the blobs is to keep you from know what those chips are. those smd caps might just be to small a value for your meter to read. the football game clean those rubber looking things and contacts on the board as well as the glass display. i have had to fix them by cleaning them on other devices.

lol, Mega Joy's and Power Joy's are something you'd get from the Eastershow I had one as a kid once 14 years ago PowerJoys have nothing to do with Nintendo 64's, very interesting but only useful for children, they have a super nintendo feel though, PowerJoy's are a tiny bit better then Super Nintendo's with their technology and all, don't waste your brains on them but they can be fun

that flat silver canister is a crystal probly for timing or other words the freq. for it to work with a tv most likely id say

Hi vince can you help me ive got a blu ray dvd player a few months ago it kept turning on and off the only way to turn it off was to unplug it so i left till now to have a look at it ive whatched your channel so i thort id have have go at trying torepair it but to no avail now you plug it in and all it dose is make a noise its the laser moving but thats all it dose also no lights on it is a Samsung bd h6500 any ideas many thanks

I just sub to your channel recently like your video so far. I saw you testing a fuse in one of your other videos with your Meters continuity mode and it beeped and you said it was a good fuse so from that I guess if it doesn't then the fuse is bad is that right to guess that. Because I have a meter and I think the fuse had been bad for a while and I have just not decided to test it till now plus the meter was old to begin with when I got it. It was lie some of the fuse you saw in your videos but it was a 2 amp one in my meter. when I change it I could go up in amps and it should be fine, right.

Nice! Yeah, I have a strange love of bootleg Chinese consoles. They're awful devices but can usually be good for really low emulation (NES and such) and worth it if bought for a few bucks.
