Trying to FIX a Radio with a Faulty Micro USB & Headphone Port

Hi, in this video I attempt to repair a faulty DAB radio which has a faulty micro USB port, also the headphone jack doesn't cut off the speakers when plugged in.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

I do hit dislike on videos from time to time, I even did disliked a few of Vince' ones (not this one, tho it does not matter). On one or two I did quickly after watching a minute or two, realizing for whatever reason I personally did not enjoy the content of that video, the style or the quality of it. To me the dislike button is not a "I hate you or your content Vince" but "My friend Vince, I personally did not enjoy this video" I don't think KZfaq's feedback options are in particular great, but the like/dislike ratio gives Vince at least a bit of a gauge.

Sometimes when using earphones with included mic the jack can confuse the jack, especially in older devices. Try using headphones with two segments on the jack and not 3. Keep them coming Vince....

Exactly what I thought as soon as he pulled it out slightly. My old MP3 player was made before inline controls and it has the same problem.

It also doesn't help that phone headsets don't always use the same pin outs between handsets and manufacturers. Plus some older iPods used a 4 pole jack connectors for the optional inline remote control so that could be why the iPod worked with phone headset.

the reason the iPod worked with the 4-contact headphone cable was because it doesn't gave the sensing capability at all. it doesn't have speakers so it doesn't need to detect if headphones are connected before switching outputs, it just always powers the headphone jack (and doesn't need to turn off power to anything else). the radio would have 5 contacts (left, right, ground, and two which short together when the headphones are plugged in). the iPad would only have 3 (left, right, and ground). not saying the jack manufacturer shouldn't have accommodated for this by just moving the contacts though.

Using 400°C on a board that small can rip pads. The "old" design irons have really low thermal mass, and suggest using a "new" style iron like the TS100 or KSGER T12 Station with heater & tip built-in. Otherwise, amazing video as always!

@chromatiCityGame

Yes, same here. 320-350°c is considered "normal" pcb soldering temp. But you may need to adjust that depending of the pcb, solder and iron... 400 seems a lot especially if used for several seconds on one spot... may start to lift traces etc.

The speaker cutoff in the jack socket is staggered so that when you plug headphones in the speakers don't cut in and out while you are inserting the jack. It will only cut the speaker when the jack plug is fully inserted. The iPod doesn't do this because it doesn't have a speaker to cut off...

Headphone port is not faulty. It is a 3 pin socket designed for a standard 3 pin 3.5 mm headphone plug. I have never come across a radio with a socket designed for a 4 pin plug. As to the USB power socket - the problem lies with the delicate connections of a surface mount component. Excess force by the user when inserting a USB plug easily pushes the socket off its tiny soldered pads. Your solution of glue behind the socket is good and manufacturers sometimes use this technique at the production stage.

in the old days of chassis mount 3.5 sockets a ts would have 3 wires and a stereo / trs socket would have 5. in the simple case of a mono ts for example the ground / sleeve was 1 wire from sound out to socket then straight to speaker. the other positive output went to a trminal on the tip part of the socket, with a copper piece touching another piece which then went to the out terminal and ooff to the speaker. inserting the plug meant the tip interrupted this connection, and the signal flowed down the plugs tip instead and to the earphone. removal reversed the process. the trs was similar with 2 more terminals to facilitate the middle extra ring for second channel...

the three pole is the correct one... the four pole are designed with a mic.. and you do not use that on a radio... the 4 pole is for phones that need the Mic.
@SPEXWISE
@SPEXWISE 4 жыл бұрын
They should still work as the 3 poles are still in the same position on the 4 pole connector. I just tried my headset with mic in just a headphone jack on my PC and they work fine. Backwards compatible in my case. Maybe his headphone port is a bit fussy.

I have a laptop with a combo 3.5mm jack, and my headphones with mic are for PC and have the same 4 pole config, but when pluged in directly, the mic doesn't work. Only works when i use a spliter to 2 3.5mm jacks and join them toghether again with an adapter. And i've tried them on my phone and on my Switch, same thing. Kinda strange, if you ask me.

The ipod doesn't need this "extra" pin in the headphone plug because it doesn't have a speaker in order to detect if the headphones are plugged in. A lot of devices though, even in our days, are confused/don't play normally if you plug in a 4 segment headphone jack where you supposed to plug only headphones with 3 segments.

Tip-Ring-Sleeve support on devices usually designs for using those with fewer but not with more than the device was designed to use. The Nano works with those TRRS headphones because it supports headsets. The Radio doesn't- it only works with TRS. You would see the same problem with the iPod if you used a dual Stereo headset that used a TRRRS connector.

I expect the reason why the iPod works with the mobile phone headphones is because it always outputs to the jack and doesn't actually try to detect whether there is anything plugged in or not - if it did then I bet you'd have seen the same problem. Not the same footprint or even same amount of pins (C has more), so not on the same PCB. i.stack.imgur.com/01UBN.png Given, AFAIUI, that this unit only uses it for power, I'd rather go for a barrel jack, but if you can find a chassis mount USB C socket, you could wire just +5 and GND over to the board.Or maybe mod it so that a USB C breakout board could be finnagled into the right position, and bring +5 and GND over from that.
