Trying to FIX another (2nd) Faulty Nintendo Switch from eBay - PART 1

Hi, this 'trying to fix' video shows me attempting to repair a broken Nintendo Switch. I purchased 2 faulty Nintendo Switch's from eBay from the same seller and I am doing 2 videos on it. The part 1 video is on the first Switch and the part 2 video is on the second Switch. This one is part 1 so this broken Nintendo Switch is really bent out of shape.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
Many thanks Vince.

These videos are brilliant Vince! I'm not at all a hands on or DIY person, changing light bulbs intimidates me, but this series has really made me want to have a go and learn some practical skills. I've got an old DS light with a fault D-pad that I never use anymore so I'm very tempted to open it up and have a poke around as I've nothing to lose. Thanks for the sharing your passion for an interesting hobby!

The docking port is right in the middle, where the switch got bent. So it's most likely the portnot making proper connection to the board, having come off. Resoldering it's pins to the board might fix it?

Just to add to this response: HDMI over USB-C uses super-speed pins on USB-C cable, and switch will get power/etc even if they are disconnected. Besides solder crack on connector, it could be bad connection to USB-C chip / balls that cracked under that chip. And because switch does detect docking, and that uses USB for checking, only one of super-speed diff. pairs could be broken. You could test this with multimeter , up to chip. ( Also, you might be able to see diff. pairs ) p.s. If it's problem with crack in chip's solder balls just heating it up a little bit might help. If it's board that is faulty then ... GGWP, or Louis . p.s.s. Also, you might be able to check if there is data coming out of chip using multimeter, but I'm not 100% sure that you multimeter can detect AC.

While it would be annoying if it couldn't dock without heavy repair, having a working Switch that isn't bent anymore is pretty amazing feat. If docking is the only casualty, you can workaround that.

I love how you evolved into the fixer you are now. That horrible wifi thing is very similar to a thing inside the older iphones. I had two bought as spare or repair and had to tape that connection on the resulting hybrid. It did continue to work. My first spare or repair fix was a book reader and I managed it with much satisfaction and a lot of sweating LOL so I absolutely can understand the guilt of buying things that MIGHT not actually be fixable.

I like your mag tray idea but there is a much better way to keep track of all the screws. Take a picture of the inside (obviously the outside is easier to keep track of) then print it out and tape it to some cardboard. Then as you remove a screw you poke it into the actual spot on the picture. You can enlarge the pic if you wish, also use multiple layers for the hidden bits. Hope. You like this idea?

Lithium batteries, if you bend a battery toss it. They have layers of electrolyte and copper foil in them if you bend it you risk tearing one of the copper foils inside, If that happens the battery can catch fire. Remember the Galaxy note's that were exploding? Fun note, if you take the battery and charge it all the way and then jab a screw driver through the center it makes a really neat smoke bomb. I really enjoy that you are so determined to fix these. Not only that but you have the determination to actually fix the broken stuff not just toss it and buy replacement parts. On a side note, The first time I ever peeled a digitizer off a a device to get to the LCD I was scared as hell. You did it with so much confidence. It was refreshing. Those connectors break all the time. They are very weak. people that do cell phone repair just cut that connector off and make a direct solder connection to the board with the wire. If you open a Iphone 6 that has been refurbished you will find that just about everyone of them has had this "mod" done.

I bet the pins from the USB-C connector need to be resoldered. It was bent in the middle where that connector is. (Hopefully its just the connector, and not a break in the traces on the board itself, though from what I saw I don't think that will be the case) Its always worth a shot. As for the wifi antenna, why not use parts from the broken switch to repair it? Also, please, PLEASE replace thermal compound after removing and replacing a heat sink! Watching you slap that heatsink back on without cleaning and replacing the TIM made me shudder :-) Anyways, love watching as you learn and figure things out. That's exactly how I started with PCs, and now I've been building/repairing them for almost 2 decades both personally and professionally.

If solder wont flow into an existing solder joint sometimes it helps to add a bit of solder to the existing joint as a difference in solder composition would make them somewhat incompatible. If you're using a regular temperature controlled soldering iron it also helps to keep the tip wet with fresh solder right before soldering to better conduct the heat. From working with drone video transmitter antennas I friggen hate those UFL connectors they always break and I end up having to strip the coax and direct solder it. For jobs like these I'd highly recommend getting a cheap USB microscope, lets you zoom in enough to be able to view bad connections, solder joints, burn marks not visible to the naked eye. I admire your willingness to take on such projects without much experience in electronics - we all gotta start somewhere! I learned by opening up good or broken electronics and trying to fix or put them back together, attempting to fix electronics for friends. Eventually with practice you start fixing more than you break!

If it charges but does not dock/connect to TV, then the USB data pins were probably damaged, resoldering the data pins should fix that. The WiFi connector really should have been removed before attempting to solder it back to the board, unfortunately I don't think you'll be able to remove it now(case of needing 8 hands and the fingers of a 5yr old Chinese boy) so it would need to be cut off and replace the sma connectors if the cable is long enough and as for the superglued plastic, people that do 3d prints use acetone to smooth abs, look into Acetone Vapour Baths

Since the Switch is bent in the middle, it's probably loosen one of the solder points on the connector. Resolder it and it should fix the problem.

you should heat up the spot you were attempting to solder first, to make it actualy stick to the board, maybe you did this maybe you didnt but i didnt see you doing it just as as mall tip for future repairs, cool video tho :)

Holy cow Vince we finally figured it out. You sound exactly like Mr. Turkentine from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Now when we watch your videos we are always going to think about this first. "I've just decided to switch our Friday schedule to Monday, which means that the test we take each Friday on what we learned during the week will now take place on Monday before we've learned it. But since today is Tuesday, it doesn't matter in the slightest."

I disagree personally, I'd say having an almost fully functional switch for only $115 USD is very much worth it, the switch runs games better in handheld mode anyway
@RobertFierce
@RobertFierce 5 жыл бұрын
You can actually buy a PS4 for that money so in that regard the switch is VERY MUCH NOT WORTH IT! Nothing about the Switch warrants that oversized price.

I rarely play my PS4 outside of PSVR and I have a huge stack of games for it. I play my Switch more than anything because the games are great and it's portable. You're paying for the convenience of it pretty much being a portable 360. I'd say that's worth it enough. It's all down to opinion, though.
@RobertFierce
@RobertFierce 5 жыл бұрын
Well I don't know about you but the only time I'm on the move is when I'm on my way to work or on my way home and driving both times. So you see IT being portable does zero for me. Also if I want to do some portable gaming I just use my smartphone with PS Now/PS4 or simply connect straight to my win 10 PC remotely as well and play xbox games, both of which blow the switch out of the water for games and graphics. To each their own I guess but this switch in my eyes is far too expensive and doesn't bring anything worthy of the price to the table. Also if I want full immersion I just straight up use my 7 inch GPD portable PC that's extremely powerful with 8GB ram and a atom quad core and I can do all consoles on the go. And yes it's got brilliant 4G signal so internet connection is excellent. And guess what.. Even that IS CHEAPER than the Switch! You don't pay those premium prices for some premium features or portability when u buy a switch. You pay all that money for the Nintendo brand name.

I choose my consoles based on the games I find fun. If it has enough to interest me I buy it. I happen to like Nintendo games. Splatoon alone made the Switch worth it for me because I love the game. Not to mention some other exclusives. It's the same with any other game I like from any other company.

Best way to fix it would be to crimp on a new UFL connector and solder on a new SMT one on the board, assuming there’s enough copper left to solder to

The unconnected wire would drive me nuts! It's been my experience that a touch more heat, de-soldering braid and a liberal amount of flux may just do the trick - my guess is that the solder had low lead content (regulations and what not) so removing it takes a bit more heat than what you may be using. Great videos - super informative and nice to see people making attempts on devices that most think are past it!
