I think we need to clarify something here. Hair is "dead" material except for the follicle, mainly consisting of protein/keratin. It has 3 layers, the outer one being the cuticle. Damage is done, you can't reverse damage. You can't heal damage, because it's not "living" tissue with regenerative abilities. You can help it and mask it with silicones / oils (argan, coconut, hemp to name a few) / hydrolyzed proteins to smooth and surround cuticles, but there is no such thing as repairing damage per say. You can also add moisture back in, but eventually these things will wash out. Now, even the 'miracle' product Olaplex can't repair the broken disulfide bonds that link the Keratin (and is the reason your hair is strong and healthy looking) which happens with extensive bleaching, dyeing, heat styling etc - it, apparently, creates artificial bonds faster than the peroxide breaks the bonds when your hair is being bleached. Which is why hair bleached in combination with Olaplex looks fine. There is no official scientific backup however. In the end, the only thing to protect your hair and keeping it healthy is: 1) No bleach or dye (which you do a lot) while colour depositing is fine eg Arctic Fox, 2) No excessive heat styling (which you do a lot, even in this video) and ideally let it air-dry 3) using a Sulphate free shampoo and go as natural as possible. Some hair types do really well with Silicones and they're not the devil, but make sure they're water soluble and don't use shampoo + conditioner + mask containing sili's. 4) Brushing the ends first 5) Take care of your scalp, massage it gently, exfoliate it regularly 6) Do herbal rinses / Apple Cider Vinegar rinses once a week at least. 7) Castor oil combined with coconut oil and aloe vera makes a great mask once a week or so.

well, i only have to say that coconut oil doesn’t do much for hair in general, the hair doesn’t “absorb” it, if you will, it just stays on top. Oils like morocco and argan however really work.

Thank you. The biggest misconception is that people can “fix” their damaged hair. YOU CANT. The best way to “fix” your split ends or damaged hair, is to cut those parts off. I blame these stupid hair commercials where they KNOWINGLY put out bad/misinformation about hair.

I’m so happy you said all of this. I’ve been saying this to some people. Hair is dead soon as it emerges from the follicle. Can’t bring hair back to life. Only make it look and feel as if it is. It’s like what lotion is to our top layer of skin which a lot is already dry dead skin cells. Just moisturizing to make it feel better. Look better. When hair gets any damage, the damage is done. No going back.

If you want to get back the shine and the smoothness (and prevent too much breakage), go for silicones and oils. It doesn't repair the hair, it just make it look shiny and prevent the breakage from combing and such. Heat styling make it shine but it destroy it more so...

As someone who regularly bleaches my hair and has gotten a perm before and bleaches over the permed ends... My greatest tip is 1) don't use heat on your hair except for special occasions. 2) wash your hair only when you notice it is particularly dirty. For me, I only wash twice a week because I tend to keep it braided and don't touch it much 3) the night before you wash your hair, do an oil treatment. I use one part castor oil, one part argan, and one part jojoba. Heat it up, massage it in starting at the scalp and making sure you get extra at the ends. Braid your hair and leave it on over night(you should be able to sleep on it after a couple hours when most of the oil is absorbed).

@ilikeglitterwhores
@ilikeglitterwhores 4 жыл бұрын
@@sandyb7672 Using a wet brush on wet curly hair is fine, imo. You just need to use an appropriate amount of product with plenty of slip in it and finger detangle before going in with a brush. I get terrible fairy knots, so there's no way I can detangle my hair without the help of a brush, and I get way more breakage when I brush dry vs wet. Plus brushing my wet hair when I apply my leave in and styling products helps me to distribute my products more easily and my (knockoff) denman brush helps me to get my wavy 3a hair to behave and form curls that are more uniform and less wonky than if I don't use it. I can't speak to straight hair, because I've never had straight hair.

I did damage my hare severly in the beginning of 2017. I hated it. With a lot of treatment it was possible that it still felt ok and looked ok. But just washing it with shapoo and doing nothing else to it was totally impossible. I let the hair grow out and step by step cut of all the really dead ends. I still bleached the roots to color them, but I really prioritize the integrity of my hair. Now I only bleach the roots once a year with 20 vol. I don't use any bleach to take out the color of my hair, I am just patient and regulary walk around with a disgusting color, until it faded enough to put some new color in. But it's worth it. I can actually wash my hair with shampoo and it still looks ok after that. But normally I do use conditioner and hairoil to protect it. Because bleached hair is just much more sensitive. My hair has grown back a lot and reaches the middle of my back and I still want to have it longer. But it needs patience.

It definitely looks better. When it comes to my hair, I actually loved it when it was damaged because my hair naturally is extremely thin and fine(to the point when my ears actually pop through my hair), so the damage from box dyes gave me the small frizz that made it look thicker. I havent dyed my hair for over 9 months now as an experiment and I really hate how thin it looks when I leave it down, but I'm not sure if I'm ready to begin investing into box dyes again.

"Don't blowdry your hair" 2 minutes later "I'm going to straighten my hair" Sorry girl, but you're far more damaging your hair with heat styling than you do when you dry your hair with cold hair (like most curlies does actually). All these products you've put in your hair are just silicones, they just make your hair look better, they dont treat them. And if you would hydrate and nourish your hair after that, you can't because all the silicones prevent the moisture to treat your hair.

Do you use a lot of hair products with silicone in them? I've noticed that most of these repairing products have a lot of silicone in them to make the damaged hair look more smooth. Seems to work well to conceal the damage but it doesn't really make the hair any healthier.
@Kys99
@Kys99 4 жыл бұрын
If your hair is damaged because of bleach, you can't fix it at all. It's a chemical damage, you can just try to make it stronger (so it doesn't fall off after some time) and look better, so silicones are not bad at all, in this sense. Basically, you need to keep moisturizing your hair with 2-3 products (masks, conditioners and oils), or it will get worse after awhile.
@julzalta6466

It can prevent too much damage from combing and brushing (and heat styling a little little bit). But otherwise I agree you can't repair the hair.

yeah, it pretty much just masks the hair. but it can be useful to mask the damage until it grows long enough for you to cut the damage off. some types of hair doesn't really react well to silicone though, and while all the things she uses work for her, they might not work for people with different texture, porosity, etc.
@xlenaqz

Well you can't make the hair healthier if the hair is dead so using silicones to make it look better makes sense. Her hair needs to be cut anyways
@ilikeglitterwhores
@ilikeglitterwhores 4 жыл бұрын
I agree that if your hair is damaged, it's not going to get less damaged, but masking damage and making hair look shinier is not the only function that silicones have. They provide slip (which allows a brush to pass more easily through the hair) and they prevent tangling and breakage, protect hair from heat and other damage, and make hair look shinier and smoother, yes. But they also act as an emulsifier; keeping ingredients better mixed and allowing a product to coat the hair more easily, and their primary function in hair products is that of a sealant. They are often used in products like this because they create a moisture barrier which seals moisture into the hair strand (and also prevent too much moisture from getting into the hair strands from the outside air)and protect hair from getting dried out or damaged. They work particularly well with humectants (which will probably also be in all of these things in high concentrations) because the humectants bring moisture into the hair strands and silicones seal that moisture in and prevent the humectants from bringing too much moisture into the hair when the air is humid (which causes frizz, but can also cause severe damage to the cuticle of the hair) and/or taking too much out of the hair when the air is dry. So silicones may not repair damaged hair (since nothing can, especially once you get to this point), but they can help to keep it as healthy as possible when used correctly.

How I handle my hair be like: *I don't use a hair dryer (or towel dry like there's no tomorrow) since I let my hair air dry everyday. *I also do not cover my hair with a towel and put it on top since the hair is vulnerable when wet. I just gently squeeze it with a towel and leave it alone. *I rarely use a hair curler or hair iron since it can make the hair be prone to damage. I only use those in special occasions. :') *I rarely bleach my hair since I usually use the same hair color (currently using a permanent hair dye with the shade of burgundy, though I'll switch to Arctic Fox), but when I do use bleach, I make sure to give at least a 3- month window in applying dyes so my hair won't be too brittle and dry. *I prefer to use creamy conditioners that's infused with hair serums, and hair treatments for damaged hair. *I don't really have a 7-8 step hair care routine since (I'm broke lol) I don't really style it too much, so using creamy conditioners and hair treatments can fix it within minutes. *If I do want to make fun of my hair, it's either I cut it by myself or dye it :')

@Ray-vg9ly
@Ray-vg9ly 4 жыл бұрын
For the once who don't know why: Shampoo removes natural oils (or some stuff you'd put on your hair that could cause build up, like coconut oil) from your scalp. Your roots has more oil since it's closer to your scalp, so it's best to remove those oils by shampoo (the frequency of use depends on how oily your hair gets). Your ends actually need those oils since it doesn't get much of it. When shampooing the scalp, the shampoo can get to the ends when while washing it away but water. This makes sure your ends doesn't get stripped too much of the natural oils.

Most curly girls do serious deep conditioning and moisture treatments before something like straightening. So i don’t think there is anything wrong with what she did. She did an intense moisture treatment, to make it feel better. And then styled it. Like most people do.

Healthy hair has a smooth cuticle, which makes it shiny. Damage occurs from the cuticle being roughed up and no longer being smooth from it expanding from lightening it, coloring it, and heat styling, which then loses its shine, and becomes weak and dry and splits from it wearing away. The only thing you can do is ironically use heat to smooth the cuticle, or color it darker, which deposits color into the shaft, making it temporarily smoother by filing in the damage, and using products that temporarily have the same effect. Trimming hair regularly until it all grows out again is all you can do. On average, hair grows 1/2 inch a month or 6 inches a year, so trimming the ends every few months 1/4” you’ll see length and have healthy hair.

Also once u bleach ur hair its damaged for sure but that's why I like dyes with conditioner bases in them because you gotta keep putting moisture on it or it'll definitely go dry a brittle. And you can do that with oils and hair masks and stuff too. So yes basically you're correct. If you just leave the bleached hair or "developed" hair alone, it will just get worse. And after its gotten over that "trauma" you've done to it, it'll go back to somewhat normal. And that's also why moisturizing it especially with dye which you do, helps.

To be honest, I don't think anything you did helped. Using the blue shampoo for the colour undid your first step. You didn't choose a good shampoo. You didn't wash your scalp either and really you shouldn't use shampoo on your ends much at all and certainly not rub them the way you did. Also you need a good conditioner, I don't think you used one at all which is a huge mistake. And then you should use a hair mask, preferably one without silicone, and put a lot more on than you did. And also one without colour in it, because colour, even in small doses, damages your hair. Then you can add in the leave in products. And then you heat styled it?????? WHY??? You might as well have used a hair dryer because you used heat on it anyway, in fact a hair dryer on cool/cold air would have been faaaaar far better than heat styling it. In fact, you could have braided it or put pin curls in it overnight to style it effortlessly without any heat at all. Tried and tested. What you did, didn't help. I would have thought a hairdresser would know better...

I do 320-340 degrees for my damaged hair!! (The top part gets the higher heat) And for my regular it was 360.. our hair looks similar, watch out and don’t fry your hair more with heat!- idk how much heat protectant actually does and if I got enough on so I keep the heat as low as possible to be safe

For me the only option was to gradually cut the hair, use sulfate free shampoo, and natural hair dye ^^ nourishing hair mask with 0 chemical or silicones... that means no fun color but gorgeous silky and shiny hair. And a healthy scalp!

"Ironically looks the same", I laughed. I'm used to damage my hair, I find it easy to recover when you do a smothed treatment with keratin, something without formol. And after that I'm good to damage again, you just have to use a really nice product, if it's cheap you can maybe lose hair bleaching. I'm very picky with that. Until now, I have hair 😂😂😂 I'm anxious to try that green of yours. It was beautiful.

shampooing / washing your hair daily can damage it, and towel drying can damage it as well. Using hot/warm water for everything will open the cuticle of your hair. In order to get the cuticle of the hair to close you need cool/cold water. Also when brushing brush out the tip of the hair and work you way to your roots, it minimizes damage to the hair, but you still need to brush the roots to help spread your hairs natural oil.

If you air dry your hair, try making it dry a bit faster. You shouldn't leave your hair wet for so long cuz it can cause hygral fatigue, which is caused when your hair shaft swells up (or expands), it can also cause bacteria buildup (I think). You could try moving around your hair slightly (but don't touch it, just sway your hair a bit), or try going to a windy (but not too windy) place to dry faster. Ps I really love your channel, I've been watchinv your since last year (way earlier for your ig though). I really hope you'd see this so you could take more good care for your hair. ❤️

Maybe you can try the co wash method. My hair looked the same as yours. Shampoo strips the hair. I only use shampoo when my hair gets itchy. For the rest i always use masks to wash my hair the last 2 years and my hair looks totaly diffrent now. I even saw a diffrent after 6 months.

you can leave the olaplex overnight and wash it when you wake up. reviving your hair takes time try real treatment masks that doesn't contains silicones and give it a time while stop killing the hair with heat.

I love your videos and Malta been so many times. But the violet shampoo thing is wrong! It’s the sulphate used not the pigment that damages and some also add ammonia or peroxide to them. There are ones that contain no ammonia or sulphate if you google.

you can make your hair look healthy, but broken is broken. if you want to have healthy hair, you have to cut it off and let it grow again. and instead of expensive silicone-based products I recommend hair masks made from organic oils. it helped me: -argan and coconut oil -coconut oil, one egg yolk, honey -castor oil -olive oil

with a fine 3b 3c curly hair the best thing i've ever done after curling/flatironing it every day is to leave it alone, i bought the good bobby pins and just braided it until the ends totally recovered, it took 2 years and i still dye it at least once a month but the curls are there and they are happy. but it took me until i've left university to stop heatstyling the crap out of it. also, 390 is still too high for flat iron, 360 should be good enough. and yes, i am a hairdresser.
