Let's face it, the worst outdoor spray job will always look better than next door's brush finish, but it’s easy to underestimate how much time it’s going to take to do it nicely…

Clean out the window channel on the front window, a lot of rust happens in the plugged drain holes. When they replace the front window they tend to goober up the channel’s with rubber, that interns tends to rust out the channel because the water doesn’t drain correctly. Don’t let them put pack the trim piece’s, wait till it’s dry then cut off the extra rubber on the sides of the window. Then install trim
@soupclassicmotoring
@soupclassicmotoring 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks man. The window channel/panel is new! It had rusted out badly all over. That's coming in another episode shortly. The last windscreen replacement was a bodge too, so the water ran inside the cab and rusted out the floor 😑

You are a brave and admirable man! I know EXACTLY what it feels like to do that work, cause I've done the same about 10 years ago. I bought an old Transit, and did rust repairs, priming, bodywork and painting all in my driveway, under a temporary tarpaulin. What a monumental pain in the backside! Unfortunately I was not aware of the benefits of Epoxy primer and rust converter at the time, so my freshly painted van started rusting again very quickly...... chalk that up to lessons learned!

If you'd rather not spend the dosh, you may be able to separate the lens from the back shell of the headlight assembly. I've done it on my Boxster by placing the whole assembly in a kitchen oven around 200F for a few minutes. It warms the adhesive to the point where you can pry them apart. If yer just gonna toss the works, and get replacements, it's worth a try. Get a knife to score the adhesive and use your lovely red door panel tool and a pair of gloves as she'll be quite warm. Cheeers Georgie! Love your channel.😎
@andersjjensen
@andersjjensen 2 жыл бұрын
Aye! I saw a guy completely fix his FD RX-7 rear lights like that. He gently used a heat gun on low and a trim tool to persuade the parts to separate. He even managed to glue it back together that way. Gently heating the glue and scraping it to the center of the surface, so there would be enough to make a tight seal.

If you hit the bumper with a heat gun, carefully, you can usually bring them back to look almost new. Just keep the gun moving slowly so you don't melt it. I've done it on a few cars now, always brings a smile to my face. Thanks for the video, was excellent as always. :-)

The weird thing is I'm secretly looking forward to seeing the bumper as it is against the fresh paint [colour]. Something about the swirls and patterns in the faded plastic I love. It's kinda of it's time, know what I mean?
@daddymarkram
@daddymarkram 2 жыл бұрын
@@soupclassicmotoring I think I get it. Most cars have their bumpers colour matched to the body now. You mostly see these types of bumpers on cars from the 90's till about 2005-2010. There is no wrong when it comes to personal taste. If you love it as it is, then you should leave the patina.

The thing you said about unless you have a high gloss finish on the primer it's not enough, it's not that, it's just the idea of surface tension meaning that paint is its thinnest on edges and corners. This is why the idea of layers of paint that you can see as distinct, wet, smooth layers of paint is the way to do it, among the other benefits.

You should look them up. They are the original anti/stop rust suppliers m. Based in Scotland. I can’t praise their products enough. Well worth every penny and the time you will save repainting can even be applied when the metal is water covered.👍

You've no idea how your 'setbacks' actually make me feel SOOO much better! I've been working on an old Morris Minor Pickup for years now - mechanically done, purrs like a kitten (after 25 years in a shipping container!), and incredibly happy with myself. But the bodywork........ oh dear god the bodywork. I had to suspend proceedings about 6 weeks ago (I've been working on this thing for a few years now!) and put it in to storage over Winter, more for the mental break than anything else - it was so grinding me down. However, it has given me the opportunity to recommission my little 205 1.9 GTi which has embarrassingly sat in hibernation for over 3 years now. I knew it needed a timing belt change and new clutch, but the moment I took that front right wheel off to get access to the timing belt.......... yeah, I knew I was't going to be leaving it at just that! Cue the entire front suspension assembly removed and refurbed, from stripped and repainted calipers to new droplinks and wishbone bushings..... and clearly, this now also means that the moment I get a few dry days, it will be sanding back, priming and painting the sides of the engine bay where surface rust has come through around the suspension turrets (I bought a LITRE of 'Graphite Grey' from our friendly auto paint specialist.... experience tells me this won't be the last I'll be painting!). But it has been a huge mental boost being able to capture the joy of seeing progress on a project again, whereas I was just hitting walls with the Minor after so long. All going to plan, Pablo (the Pegueot!) will be jaunting up the Wicklow Mountains before Xmas........ before I then decide what part of it I want to improve next!! 😂

The thing you're talking about with going too hard with the abrasive pad is called blocking. You're meant to do it on primer layers with 2000+, preferably 3000 grit wet and dry that you make sure is wet on every stroke and free of debris. It ensures your base coat is totally flat and won't look naff after you've finished your 15 layers of clear coat. Use a wire wheel to remove those DAM IRON CLIBBINS HOSS and lay more primer down on the metal, deal with the differences in height with primer and hi-build filler primer.

Oh George you ‘tease’… great work I must say. My doors are in a poorer condition generally… and require you work or replacement good one hard to find for an LT35 BUT the door off your version of Sprinter will fit although the window line on the Sprinter has a curve… I’m not fussed by that though… the work in this video is the basis of what I need to do so a great source. That door card had me laughing. Never had the same issues as yourself… honest. Removing the doors has been a concern of mine… no more though. At work so not finsihed watching this episode. Will have to finish it later… or watch it again…?🤔. I’ll definitely be revisiting it a fair few times, help the algorithm etc. Stay lucky…

Never noticed the difference in Sprinter and LT doors, will be on the lookout now. You know where's absolutely full of old Sprinters.... Greece. Cheers Mal

@@soupclassicmotoring Ooouff just realised I hadn't watched the very end of this video..Good that you got the engine running..if it starts its 100 per cent...change fuel filter and all should be okay..Not sure when the last time you ran the engine...as unrefined as it maybe it's turbo'd and capable of big miles...also the injectors would have be sat for that time...just needed a bit of a 'work out' to wake them upYou are well on your way George...Best of luck .....

Try two pack wash primer under the epoxy. Novel is good stuff. Will never trust again. And it only activates once it hits the metal so can keep it mixed in a plastic bottle without going off.

Awesome stuff, as usual. What bums me out is complaining about winter with t-shirt on, leaves on the trees, sunshine and double digit temps. I mean that's full on summer weather. It's not even full on winter yet and I haven't seen sun for month, it's -15C outside and 15m/sec wind. Did most of my RRC rust repairs (both sills, a and b-pillars, rear wheel arches and cross member) during winter outside. That sucked.

I'm not entirely sure if you're a complete crack pot or if you're just made out of a kind of resilience afforded to very very few. Or maybe you're both, and that's why it always ends up working out for you? :P Anyhow. This was a really good episode, and I enjoyed the narrative to no end, as usual. Thank you for 40 excellent minutes! Cheers!
