Trying to stop a sheltie barking when her best friend comes home!

Barking is practically a compulsion with my sheltie. When she gets going it's extremely hard to get her to stop, Especially when someone is at the door.

I'm surprised you were able to stop the barking at all. My sheltie was extremely well behaved, but he believed he had a first amendment right to bark.

I love it! "A first amendment to bark" Honestly it's rare that I can get her to completely stop barking when she's that excited.

I'm lucky with mine because he rarely barks, but BOY was it hard work, and I mean 12 months of training to where he isn't half as bothered by certain noises and will let out a few hoofs most of the time rather than a full barking fit

The sheltie "Yes!" barking is so cute! Just saying yes! yes! yes! once every second. I just showed this to my sheltie, and he was amazed. ❤

This is a wonderful video to show the love between you and your Sheltie! She's so excited and following her natural talkative instinctive but she also wants to please you. This is also why Shelties are awesome! They will be enthusiastic (like the comment below on a First Amendment right to bark), but, they will also work with their humans to learn because they have big hearts. Affectionate Sheltie facial expressions are awesome! Thanks for sharing.

Thank you, for your lovely comment. It has taken me a little while to interpret her different expressions barks & other sounds she makes, but it's so worth it for the connection I'm able to have with her.

My Sheltie is 12, and I've had 12 years to trying to stop him from barking when he gets wound up. Many times I succeed easily...but other times, not so much. He lives with a 13 year old Rough Collie who never barks, and a 3 year old Golden Retriever who almost never barks. I'm convinced it's a breed thing.

I think it's a breed thing too. Growing up we had a sheltie & a golden retriever the golden rarely if ever barked & the sheltie made up for both of them lol. With the one I have now it all depends on what she's barking at sometimes she'll stop when I say to other times there's no stopping her & i just have to listen to her sing the Shetland national anthem.

Your dog looked like mr SHENANDOAH he is like the one on a bag of scienve diet. My son has a dog that pushes all dogs around. Frankly that might have done in Mr SHENANDOAH

What exactly do you do? To train it to stop barking at all the next time? I wanna know. Does this work to completely stop the barking if you do it consistently?

So far she has me stumped. I've tried multiple things to see what clicks with her. But I don't have 1 single way to make her stop. It all depends on her level of excitement. Sometimes she responds to a sit stay, sometimes the word stop, other times saying it's ok we're safe thank you for telling me. So yeah, sorry I don't have a good answer.

I do, once the car is parked, otherwise she thinks she can herd it into the garage.

Does it work to make the barking less over time? Cause im not planning to wait 1 minute everytime i open the door, i'd rather just quickly open the door so the barking stops instantly lol@@dogonadventures

I'm so sorry I never responded .I just saw your comment. It probably would but she's extremely stubborn &; it can be really hard to get her to stop barking whether the door is closed or open.

I think everyones Sheltie is like this, truly psychotic barkers. Mine will even wake me up in the middle of the night with a random nightmare bark! The other thing is he goes AROOOO AROOOO if hes unhappy at me lol

Lol that is too funny, mine barks & stomps her front paws when mad at me. I'm glad I'm not the only one with a sheltie like this.
