this page turned out really nice but i had a few thoughts whilst watching? with painting with watercolour taping down the page is honestly really useful if you plan on doing multiple layers of paint, it prevents the page from warping and you wont get odd pooling of paint into the dips. one thing you can do is tape it down onto a book/the cardboard on the back of the paper block you used so you can still move it around ^-^ also! when using watercolour you should do a pool of paint on the pallete to work from instead of going straight to the pan as the colour can be a bit inconcistent. you might also find it easier to use a watercolour round brush as it'll hold more paint so you can get smoother washes. youre currently using a acrylic filbert brush which does technically work? it just holds not much water and is pretty stiff so you can damage the paper after a couple of layers. you also might want to use two jars of water, one for cleaning your brush and the other to use to paint with. finally you might want to spray your pans with water a couple of mins before painting so you can get a super bright colours as this brand does not reactivate super easily. sorry for the wall of text :'D i just really like watercolours and art supplies in general

Beautiful! Love the way you used the paint. And your comment about leaving a part of the page that's challenging and returning to it later is SO TRUE. Thank you for sharing your coloring talent!

If you run out of the pans, I recommend buying individual tubes of your favorite colors to refill the pans.

Thanks for branching out into watercolors. I’m interested in branching out as well. I need some media that I can use on “bad hand” days. I’d love to see more watercolor work!

The Chiclets name is derived from the Mexican Spanish word "chicle", derived from the Aztec Nahuatl word "chictli/tzictli", meaning "sticky stuff"

Haagse hopje are Dutch sweets which are wrapped the same as watercolour pans, at least the van Gogh and Rembrandt are wrapped using the same machine as used in the sweets. You don't have to rip your pages out.. just use a paper in between if you want. I never do and I use water colour in ALL of my books! If they are really wrapped I use an iron to make it flat! Most of the the paper will take watercolour but it will never work as good as watercolour paper.. you have to work quicker and LESS water.. i don't use my expensive paints in my book but I do use al most eventing else (neocolor 2, inktense and watercolour pencils).

Not sure how you applied theses markers, depending on the paper you may need to scribble the marker on a slick surface, the apply with paint brush. Unless you use watercolor paper, you need to go lightly

I too move my pictures as I work. Maybe tape it to a smaller board? Then you can still move it while using the taped technique. Thanks for something new to think about with the watercolors 🙂

To watercolor on blooming book is difficult because the paper is not watercolor paper, which is designed to absorb water and allow for movement. Watercolor pencils would be for someone wanting to try watercoloring

I have a tip if you want to tape the page but still turn the page = you tape in on the surface which is slightly larger than the page and you can turn the surface! :) I use my old folders that are glued together so they are larger than the page but small enough to rotate :)

Have you ever used watercolor pencils? Seems like the best of both worlds. I have Faber-Castell watercolor pencils, but there’s not a lot of good instruction out there. Trying to learn from colored pencil videos, along with watercolor videos. Need help on this medium. 😵‍💫

OK. So I hate to tell you this after such an investment but Cotman is pretty awful. It has poor pigmentation, is notoriously hard to rewet, and the blending and layering is really frustrating. The two things it does have going for it is transparency, which is one of the most important aspects when painting over line drawings, and the fact that is is mostly very lightfast. The great thing about watercolor is it's mixability.. so you don't need a lot of colors.. get yourself a small selection of professional grade paints, you will be much happier in the end. The difference is night and day... watercolor is one medium where quality matters and it makes painting so much more enjoyable and functional when you have decent supplies. I suggest a split primary, which is a transparent single pigment warm and cool of each primary.. so that is six colors.. plus burnt sienna. Burnt sienna gives you easy browns and easy grey when mixed with your warm blue. Both DaVinci and Daniel Smith sell split primary sets, or you can use those as color suggestions for other brands.... just look for transparent and single pigment colors. I also highly suggest copying the coloring page onto actual watercolor paper.. or at least mixed media paper. You can do this with either a pigment based inkjet or a laser printer (with a back side feed to accept the heavy stock), or take it to a copy shop and have them do it for you. My home printer cost $35 so it's not a matter of expense, just the right choice. Again, your experience will be leaps and bounds better with the right paper. Unsized paper technically will take the paint but it doesn't allow you to blend or have any kind of flow to the color.. it just grabs it immediately... it also warps and causes pigment to pool. Do tape it down, but use a board of some kind which will allow you to move your page around as you wish. Gatorboard, 7/16" posterboard, glass, plexi, plywood.. anything relatively water resistant and firm enough not to bend. Get a watercolor brush, Princeton makes nice ones (velvetouch, aquaelite, neptune) for a low price. Add in everything Molly said below.
