Edward's Fagi Recipe: / 17880652720564031
Lisanne: / lisanne.d.d
Her Family Recipe:
I think this is good for 2 people:
-100 g onions (chopped)
-150 g carrots (chopped)
- 300g potatoes (peeled and halved)
-Curry powder
-Water for cooking
-Butter for frying
-Salt and pepper
-Optional: gravy, rookworst/meat
Cook potatoes and carrots in a pot with water until both are soft. Drain.
Fry the onions in a pan with butter until soft and glazed.
Add a lot of curry powder to the onions (a bit more than you might think, cause the potatoes will balance it out)
Att the onions with the juices from the onions and butter to the pan of potatoes and carrots
Mash everything together until the desired consistency (I like mine a bit lumpy still)
Season with pepper and salt, give it a good stir
Serve as is or with gravy and rookworst (or a different type of meat)

Traditional Hutspot has potatoes carrots and onions boiled at one third each, added is meat pieces after they were used to make beef stock. Butter to mash and often complemented with smoked sausage similar to Frankfurters. It is famous from the myth of the Dutch resistance war against the Spanish 400 years ago, where when Spanish besieged Leiden, and were finally rescued by the ancestor of the current Royal Family, finding a dish similar to hutspot in the Spanish encampment, hence the yearly hutspot festival in Leiden

BTW, I imagine that most of you are doing this already, but upping your Vitamin D levels has been shown in clinical trials to reduce both the likelihood of getting C 19 and its severity if you do get it. They tested a lot of other vitamins and none worked. With us getting outside less, most of us aren't getting enough. If you need the citation, or are interested in a discussion of the research, Dr. John Campbell in the UK has it on his channel. Stay safe!

Little addition to the Hutspot recipe: when you boil the potatoes apart until they're reeeeally soft, pour out the water and add a little bit of milk and butter and then mash them. If you pan-fry onions and carrots in the same pan (and add nutmeg, salt, pepper and a bit of curry powder) and then add them to the mashed potatoes, I think you get a dish that has more layers of flavour. Also, typically hutspot is eaten with 'hachee' , 'rookworst' or 'spekjes'.

You could also replace the carrots with kale. We call that one "boerenkoolstamppot". Literally that means something like "farmers cabbage mash". I prefer this one :) I would suggest adding butter, salt and pepper to taste though and optionally mustard.

Yum! The gratin reminded me a lot of the potato pie my mom used to make. She'd lay out bacon on the bottom of a glass dish, letting it hang over, then layer thin slices of potato, onion, and cheese. Then she'd fold the overhanging bacon over the top to seal it, like a crust made of bacon. She'd bake it in the oven then serve it with maple mayo sauce. Sooo good and soooo bad for you.

I'm in Edmonton, not only cold but very dry. Larnaca is very humid, and the modern houses are not built to hold heat. Our first winter was spent trying to figure out how to keep the house warm with a few small gas heaters. I would take my kids for a drive to warm up! By the following year we had it figured out. But it was a shock that first year. I loved living there. Beautiful country and the people are warm and kind. Oh and the food! YUMMMM

@@riogold1829 Ah, that makes sense. If the houses are built differently it make a difference. It’s like placing getting 3 inches of snow and the people are worried. It’s not the amount of snow it’s the lack of snow removal gear. Lol

Your gratin dauphinois looks so good. It is a great intro to French cuisine as it is easy and a very common dish in France. The kind you make when you have surprise guests for dinner because it's not complicated, and it requires few ingredients that are easy to find. We usually serve it with lettuce and a nice vinaigrette :) I’m definitely trying the fagi and the stamppot 😇

Thanks for these lovely videos, they are such a delightful break in my day. Hey Beryl, I’m glad you’re feeling better. There is a German dish I was introduced to, called labskaus (the German dish not the Norwegian stew) and basically, you take potatoes boil them until super soft, then take some canned corned beef cook it down in a pot with some stock and a bay leaf, add the potatoes to the beef and mash them so that it’s like a chunky mash (you’ll need the texture lol) then my mom would add a bit of the pickled beet juice to make the color even more appetising 🙄😂. Once that’s all combined and seasoned with salt and pep, you fry some eggs so they are still runny. Add the beef and potato mixture to a plate top with the fried egg and serve with pickles, pickled herring (gross), or my favorite way is just with a big portion of the pickled beets (but they have to be cold straight from the fridge) I like the hot and cold combination. It’s the ugliest food, but so tasty 😍

No one is sensationalizing Covid-19. My cousin died of Covid-19 this morning. He was 38. They tried all the treatments available and nothing. He was gone less than a week after his symptoms started. He went to a doctor's appointment, that's all. He wore a mask, the doctor followed all procedures, but he ended up showing symptoms 3 days later. Before he got put on the ventilator, he said he thought it was the guy in the waiting room that kept fidgetting with his mask. They are doing contact tracing now. This virus is relentless and the worse is that we haven't found why some people survive even if they are old and others die so quickly even if they are relatively young. They are also checking which strain he had because it was so vicious to his body. Within 48 hours he was on a ventilator and I woke up to the news today that he had passed. Let's count ourselves lucky that we haven't gotten it, but PLEASE do not get cocky or dismissive. We are all tired. None of us are happy to wear a mask. Please, if not for you, wear a mask for someone you don't want to lose. This agony is something no family should go through.

Eileen, that's WONDERFUL! Don't know if you know, but it's better to NOT take pre-emptive ibuprofen, acetaminophen, etc. (for pain relief from the shot). Your body will have more antigens in the future if you skip the over-the-counter meds for 14 days. Scientists realized this trait by studying the bloodwork of kids whose parent gave pre-emptive pain-relief for childhood vaccines vs. those whose parent did not. The kids who didn't get the pain meds had better counts in the future. Hope you see this in time! And I'm happy you got your shot!
