PART 5 - Opensource Firmware Review
I have been riding with the new firmware for over 3 weeks now. In that time we have made lots of improvements. I now believe the firmware is ready for everyone to enjoy.
This video will take you through some of the features of the new opensource firmware so you can make up your own mind whether it is the right thing for you. Enjoy and please post any questions.

Great Work,, just got this working today. Far better setup than the stock, looking forward to extracting the best out of the system. Building a big 52V battery for a couple of leaning trikes at the moment, be interesting how the new setup compares to the 48V hub motor from factory.

Thank you for this video! I will be ordering the 750w 48v kit soon. Will the firmware work with the lcd5 or do I need to order an lcd3? Will the lcd3 work with the newer controller? Does this firmware work only with the 6pin or with the 8 pin lcd3 also? I am not going to use a throttle because the rules in Oregon would limit my speed too much if I do but I would like to maintain the option for resale value. I will let it go if I need to, I want to use this firmware.

Great video. In an older video, you said the Trek Powerfly was just so much smoother. After the firmware upgrade, how much "smoother" is the TSDZ2? Has it closed the gap to the smoothness (and analog bike feel) of the Powerfly?

Jbalatutube: Hi, I really appreciate all the information you are passing on. I am dying to try this but I have not yet purchased the motor because I can't find good info to decide between 36v and 48v versions. My principle goal is to go up long steep mountain roads, and I am almost 200lbs. (88 kgs). I have a few 36v batteries now, so I am leaning towards the 36v edition, but I don't want to buy the wrong one. I listened to most of your videos and know about the 90rpm cadence limit of the stock firmware, and the way the open source removes that limit. If you know, are the 36v and 48v the same except for firmware? Does the 48v version use different windings to handle more watts or a different KV rating. That is different number of RPM per volt. Is the controller on the 48v able to handle more watts. Perhaps it has larger capacity or more mosfets. If you know great or could point me to where to find this it would be most helpful.

Hi Matt please explain about the green plug. Unfortunately I had to cut the plug from my ktlcd3 and use a plug from a speedo splitter cable. You could just cut off both sides and splice together up to you. Please see the wiki for wiring instructions or watch some of my older videos.

Is it true that you can only get higher cadence (above 90 rpms) when running in 36V mode? It would be nice to have higher cadence features with a normal setting on a 52V or even 48V setup (motor and battery) so the speedometer isn't off. Is this possible?

Hi Chris please ride the bike with the stock firmware first just to make re everything is working fine with the motor. Yes the firmware gives a huge performance boost similar to bosch but the motor is loud and not smooth like the bosch. The advantage is that you can tune the amount of assist to suit your riding style, I find that I am always sweaty when I ride my bosch because the assist level is not right for commuting but more suited for mountain biking.

I have the Gen 1 Bosch 50 Nm and stock firmware TSDZ2, the Bosch is more powerful and runs cool all the time, the TSDZ2 gets very hot. The rating of 80 Nm out of the box is and absolute lie, it's more like 40 Nm. The only issue with the bosch is the 27/28 Km/hr cut off, so on level ground the TSDZ2 is faster but where I need it the most the TSDZ2 can't deliver the goods. I can't imagine the open firmware will gain 30-40 Nm ?

@@iamkaifulify The Sonders thin uses a different motor and controller. The Open source firmware that is running here has been adapted to use the LCD3 display, which appears to be the same as your Sonders bike uses. Although they are the same, the firmware here is tailored to the TSDZ2 so is not a drop in replacement for the sonders hub motor controller. That said, if you research further, you will find out that this firmware was based on an older open source ebike firmware project. The older project also had Cashainho as a lead developer. By this I am suggesting that with some work, you may find there is open source software for your Sonders. But that is just an educated hunch.

Sky man ok there are different versions of the firmware now. The one here that I use goes to version 20 beta 1 which runs on a ktlcd3 display. Marco has ported this to run on the standard displays however it can’t give you any of the data and the settings must be done using a Java app. Casainho has continued on his own to use the colour 850 display and the small sw102 display, it is not as good as the 20 beta 1 as yet but it is currently the only branch being developed so it will be getting better. Anyway more info on endless sphere tsdz2 threads.

@@jbalatutube hood to know. I am looking ad the e-assist gor my recumbent Trike that I am building. This e-assist seems to be good for the price. The blue gear seems to be the biggest weakness and that is easy to fix and replace with an other one. Now I also noticed that there is other firmware, but I don't know if it is something that would work for me. I want to ride long distances and not really high speeds. I have a 9gear ad the rear and currently a 3 gear in front, but that will be replaced by the e-assist. I don't need a high cadance, so I don't know if that is something for me, but more power and a longer range is something I like, because it needs to pull more weight. But I must look into it as I have the e-assist. I ho for 250w because of the rules out here. Don't want to have a licence plate and don't want yo wear a helmet. Also I don't need to go 45km/h. I will personally stay under 20km/h.
