Here's a lesson on the guitar parts played by George Harrison on this classic song from the Abbey Road album.
Oops - After working on this lesson for nearly two weeks I did a GOOGLE search to insert a photo of Chris Thomas. A photo of Phil Spector appeared. I should've caught that. Sorry, my mistake.

I know the focus is on George with this song but it still baffles me how four young men in the space of what 8 years (62 - 70) went from knowing a handful of chords each to the accomplished musicians and songwriters we know. Astonishing advancement.

Combination of them really paying attention to patterns that exist in well-written songs that came before them (American songbook and old standards), and their experimentation with cannabis and LSD taught them to think out of the box and add new ideas. The countless songs they learned before they started writing their own gave them a mental database of composition techniques that stand the test of time

Back in the day most bands never attempted Something because of all the naughty chords. We played it every night, patrons loved it. Figuring the damn thing out was a bitch but we got it close. It looks like it's still fighting back. Thank you!

Your choice of song material, the precision of your deconstruction of what they all contributed, and of course the history and lore, and ultimately your own performance, is all extraordinary. Many, many thanks for all the fine content, education, and technique, and insights. Here's a recommendation for a simple, but not so simple, Beatles song that some of us love and view as a buried treasure, kind of like Hey Bulldog. Song I'm referring to is Dr. Robert off Revolver. Just an incredible track that never gets old...and reading up about it, can understand why. Their arrangement, song key, chord progression changes, the multiple vocal and guitar tracks, all make for an incredibly interesting song that accentuates Lennon at his best, McCartney at his best, and Harrison as well. Please, do consider making it the subject of in depth examination. Cheers and all the best from the Heartland of the good old USA.

Great video and back story. Thankfully the Beatles never broke up during the Let it Be sessions and they went on to give us their swan song album Abbey Road which is my favourite all time album. It was always a struggle for George to get his songs recognised and recorded with the Beatles, I always liked all of his songs, but his two song contributions ‘Something’ and ‘Here Comes the Sun’ along with his guitar playing, on Abbey Road were on another level, and he could deservedly walk away from the Beatles with his head held high as a great song writer.

What a Coincidence! I spent several days the week ago recording just this, also all the instruments by myself! From listen the original version, play guitars, and specially bass and drums I went completely nuts and felt in love finally and totally this time, to this "Harrisong" and Beatles´Jewell! But far of the precision you have explained here as usual about how to play guitars: Thanks a Lot, Mike! Maybe I can improve the mess mixing I got finally, or patiently redo it totally... I know I am late commenting on this but besides being an absolute genius of a song it is so unusual and unique! It has mesmerized me since I first heard it when Abbey Road came out. I mean the progression the way ,that riff starts it off and links it together and of course the solo…almost totally unique to my ears! I mean can you think of another song similar to this musically? The only other instrument I think that may play a solo like this is maybe a muted Trumpet…I mean most guitarists would never start where he starts in that solo or those notes …most would play the blues! Even the rhythm guitar is odd and wonderful with those voiceings . Thanks great job!

My old guitar teacher and friend (god rest his soul) always told me Harrison was great guitarist, but didn't come into his own until he figured out inversions and started using them to stay away from John's space on the fretboard. But we did notice while watching the Peter Jackson "Let It Be" that George was using a capo while showing the band the song asking about lyric ideas. My friend handed me his beer picked up his guitar and capo, thought for a long second and started playing. He said to me "well that makes sense sonically. We'll work on that next week." The album mix of this classic is so rich and layered I can't pick out those parts. Always wondered if Harrison was just experimenting. As anyone I've seen play the song plays it the way you are teaching it.
