53:35 FOR CONTEXT, this was a joke in Japanese about the word for bread. So when Goku asks ‘ Pan? ‘, he’s doing it to question why they’re randomly going to get bread. It’s a joke that basically CAN’T be translated very well into English. So no, Goku didn’t forget Pan exists, he thought they were going to buy bread.

So in the manga, Goku and Pan don’t actually meet on screen until that moment. From when Pan was born to when the Granola arc ended was like…one year. So by the time the events of Superhero happened, it was years after and its implied that Goku has been on Beerus’s planet the entire time. So he legit never actually has had a moment with Pan in the manga until the end of the arc where Pan officially meets him for the first time Also, the situation with Goku forgetting has been theorized to be a joke about Pan’s name. In Japanese, Pan means “bread” so the assumption is that Goku thought they were talking about food and forgot that his granddaughter was ALSO called Pan. This isn’t new to Toriyama’s humor since back in the Cell Arc there is a similar joke done for Gohan as his name mean “cooked rice” so when Goku called out Gohan’s name, the cameraman and announcer thought Goku was declaring a break for some lunch. Its alot of japanese based humor for the most part though Japanese readers also are confused as to whether or not its supposed to be a play on words joke with Pan or Goku actually forgetting he has a granddaughter in general.

And here we are all caught up. The ending to this one had me emotional with everything that transpired with Toriyama's passing

To be fair, in the manga Gohan doesn't really get out of shape except for when he has to match up with the anime (even in BoG and RoF he was in his normal Gi and iirc they even specifically stated he kept up with training). I think Super Hero was the only allusion to Gohan slacking in the manga version (maybe the leadup to the ToP chapters hinted at it but I can't remember).

It's worth mentioning that the Super manga was a 2 man job between Toriyama and his apprentice Toyotaro. A big reason that the manga deviates from the anime is Toyotaro simply taking Toriyama's ideas (like "Caulifla and Kale fuse into Kefla") and taking them in a different direction to the anime (like how Gohan fights Kefla instead of UI Goku). Toyotaro characterizes Gohan in the ToP as having learned his lesson with regards to keeping up with his training and continues with this idea in the Moro arc (Piccolo clearly mentions that Gohan is super strong and is clearly keeping up with his training), but then the Superhero movie comes along and contradicts that, since Toriyama clearly disagrees with the idea. That's why some characterizations can come across as inconsistent. (Toyotaro really loved the Superhero movie, by the way, he said he watched it like 8 times)

This is the closest to OG Dragonball that the series has felt in a while. Excited that Trunks and Goten are relatively weak, but still getting focus. Makes me feel like they are going to be getting a lot of development and growth later on, they have a lot of potential through transformations, team attacks, and the eventual reveal of Teen Gotenks. I also think that Piccolo's new transformation may have God Ki, and Goku will sense that when he eventually gets to see it. Would provide some more explanation to the power, with the dragonballs seeming to have godly power and Piccolos new power and the Namekians being linked to them. I'd love to see an arc where Piccolo learns more about his power and the origin of the Namekians and the dragonballs. I just love Piccolo, and I think the route Toyotaro is taking the story gives me a lot of hope for him staying relevant. Between Broly, Gohan, Piccolo, Goten, and Trunks, I don't think Super is just gonna be the Goku and Vegeta show anymore.

After the drought we had waiting for Super Hero to finish, this internmission was popping off. We got to see most of our favorite "Kings" throw down in a royale rumble. It was like Toriyama said "F it, if I'm gonna go, I'ma let Toyotaro cook. Go insane with this fight." Which he did. Toyo worked with Tori for so long, I trust the next arc leading up to this will be exciting. As long he keeps that seriousness from the Granolah arc, and the silly charm OG Dragonball is known for. In the manga goku and pan never met, atleast in the anime dude was playing with pan promising her he'll fly her to the stars.

I like how in contrast to Goku and Vegeta’s godly and angelic powers, Gohan and piccolo get demonic forms. Orange piccolo looks like a Japanese oni with the antennae pointing more into horns. And Beast Gohan is a from representing Gohan finally completing his long term tutelage under the Demon King. The Mark of the Beast is even represented in the Bible as a mark on the right arm and forehead, and how does he charge up the Special Beam Cannon? Putting his right hand to his forehead, this shit is peak but people fail to see the inspiration being drawn from and miss these dope small details.
