Nice review! I always find it dissapointing when manufacturers add graphing capability to instruments and then provide little or no means to scale and label it.

They don't have multitouch zoom capability? That would be the easiest, albeit imprecise method.

Such a beautiful SMU by Rohde und Schwarz. Would love to see a teardown on the RTO2000 too.

With 0.02% voltage and 0.025% current readback accuracy, I was going to question the utility of the last 2.5 digits, but after watching your video, I see how helpful it really is.

It's important to note that the cat is not included with the SMU, it must be purchased separately.

Can you make a video of RF cables? There is so much confusion in forums and other videos. There was a nice video you made on RF components that included different styles of connectors for specific purposes. Something similar to that but for cables would be great.

That's an amazing review. The fast scale auto-ranging is something on this instrument. I've experienced some difficulties in measuring current consumption of some IoT devices. The deep sleep current consumption starts around 3 uA and then it wakes up to around 10mA in stand-by mode and then goes right into 180mA when transmitting an RF signal, before it goes into deep sleep again. Using a Keithley SMU, I had to put it manually to the 1A scale, otherwise the device would turn off when the SMU was auto-ranging. Another solution to measure this current was to use a 6 1/2 digit bench multimeter, but then I couldn't caracterize well the DC behavior of the device. I wonder if R&S is releasing some units focusing on very low current measurements with triax connectors.

Quality design and construction to be expected from Rhode and Schwarz. Hopefully future firmware updates will improve the graphing functionality. Unfortunately I've found their customer service to be pretty unaccomodating towards non-enterprise users. Also, as far as value, I find it difficult to argue that this R&S is a better value than current Keithly or Keysight boxes..

I had a very different experience. Wanted to do a firmware upgrade on my HMP 2030 (a long time after warranty), ran into some issues with USB (pretty poor instructions tbh), but after a few mails we found the problem. I was positively surprised that R&S took the time for a rather old device - non-enterprise too. I'm from Germany, so it could simplify things a bit, who knows.

Farnell selling for 5000+VAT (UKP), sounds expensive but I guess it's about right in comparitive terms given it's spec, brand name and target market. I also like how the rear panel has all the options including good old GPIB. Can't wait for the teardown.

Does this unit temporarily shut off when switching current ranges? Every SMU I have used shuts down temporarily when switching current ranges in auto range mode. If it is biasing a depletion mode FET gate that device will crater when the gate is open. Thus I am forced to use a fixed current range that encompasses the largest gate current I expect to see. The switching in SMU and DVMs occurs because the series current sampling resistor is changed. I am hoping for an SMU that does the sampling resistor switching in a make before break fashion instead of temporarily disconnecting. If this had that capability I would order some immediately. The six figure measurements make running on a fixed range a bit more tolerable, but seamless range switching would be better. This unit in your video appears to be limited to 20V. For testing I would like a unit that can to up to 60V at several Amps. Do you know if R&S is planing on any higher voltage/power models?

The biggest downside of this instrument seems to be the low force-to-source voltage drop of only 2 V. At least I think it is only 2 V because they obscure this specification in the manual by calling it "Maximum sense compensation" which is not obvious what it means. So for a typical 4-wire resistance measurement on a substrate/material (without metallic leads) you can only test up to 6 V maximum (2V over each section of the sample), and not use the full 20 V range. In reality you also have contact resistance making it even worse! Keithleys SMUs allow for 5 V drop between force and sense, but if you exceed this value you do not get a warning and you only start getting incorrect measurements. This has caused many issues in our lab! Does this instrument at least give you a warning if the voltage drop between force and sense is more than 2 V?

@@arashghasemi Most power supplies are a one quadrant instrument. A programmable load is a one quadrant instrument. An SMU, of this sort is four quadrant. It can source and sink on positive and negative rails. For some tests a power supply and DMM is enough, but they are in no way equivalent to an SMU. Not to mention, the accuracy specs of most SMUs are better than the average power supply or handheld DMM.

@@martinmckee5333 I believe you guys are correct. But I can't understand the need. If we wire a transformer to get both + and negative rails and then use heavy filtering and appropriate precision regulators on both rails then can't we do four quadrants with some acceptable precision?? at least for designing circuits like opamps ???
