This is the Race to the Clouds, also known as Pikes Peak Hillclimb on Assetto Corsa (mod originally from Dirt Rally). A gruelling 20km hillclimb that pushes both man and machine to their absolute limits. My Goal? To reach the top. But, that wasn’t going to be easy. Because like the absolute tit I am, I only gave myself 1 hour to complete this challenge.
As I set off on my first risky run up the ridge, things were, unsurprisingly, looking bleak from the very offset. The road was as bumpy as a teenager’s pimply face, and my stiffly setup subaru was skipping all over the road. To add to this, I had literally no idea where I was going, and trying to navigate the mountain was akin to trying to find a light switch in the dark. To make matters worse, Pikes Peak is comprised almost entirely of blind corners. And it’s about as intuitive to drive as a Apollo 11 was to get to the moon. There’s next to no indication to where the corners are going, so you really have to compromise both your speed and lines when first learning it, and truly drive on instinct.
However, despite the difficulty, this is something that I have become rather accustomed to with experience - no thanks to my subscribers incessant need for new content. I’m always driving new roads these days, and I’ve become adequate enough at driving purely on intuition alone.
Although it wasn’t going to be THAT easy. At the base of the rugged ream of Colaridian rock , the road is as flat as a pank.... of wood, relatively speaking of course. It’s not THAT dangerous just yet. But, I knew the further I scrambled my way up towards the pikes peaks' peak, it would become increasingly arduous.
I was slowly gaining confidence as we started edging closer towards the clouds, and was bonding with the Subaru rather grandly. It at least felt like it had literal tons of downforce, which meant I could really chuck it through these corners at some considerable speed, and make adjustments throughout. I was able to fully put down the power on these short straights too, and I became accustomed to the limits of the scoobies’ brakes. It was glorious, and for the time being this was an extremely entertaining drive. When you mix these bumpy straights, with both closing and opening radius corners and the perilous danger of trees and sheer cliffs to either side, it is quite an experience, especially when you’re in a car that can handle them with ease.
But, there was something niggling the back of my mind. I knew professional drivers could get up this bloated behemoth of rock in less than 6 minutes. And of course, this is literally my first time driving both this road and car. So rather conservatively, I was predicting my runs could take almost 66% longer. And with some kwik mafs, that would only give me just 6 runs. And that’s sans crashes or spins, which would surely dwindle away my time like wasted water trickling down a plug hole.
This train of though swiftly took me out of the flowstate I was gradually submerging into. It was immensely distracting. Ironically, I find I drive at my absolute best when I can just switch off and yeet cars around a course without much thought behind it. But, having the added pressure of my time limit, with the consequence of not having a video to post this week if I failed, was actually making my driving worse as the seconds drifted away from me .
