Not always true. If you spend a long time not speaking your native language, you will suffer from what's known as language attrition, and you are going to speak your native language quite slowly, as if you were slow in the head. And speed up when you speak your non-native language.

This is my first time hearing her speak, and I must say, her speaking voice is so cute and unique. Edit: wasn't expecting my opinion to blow up at all 🍿🍿 Seems like my compliment is outrageous to some... What I meant by Tsuki's voice being 'unique' is that her voice is something different that I don't hear often from others. And if I may add: what might be unique to me might be basic to you and vice versa. Need I say more?

@jinyoungmysteria193

That is close! We will be using the Standard Japanese dialect to make things easier. Standard Japanese: 15 consonants in IPA - m, n, p, b, t, d, k, g, ts, s, z, h, r, j, w 5 vowels in IPA - a, e, i, o, u (in which you can add them together; ai, ae, au, ei, ou, oa, and etc. but they are not considered diphthongs). Now, we will take a look at the syllable structure of Standard Japanese; (V)CV(V)(*C) The V stands for vowel and the C stands for consonants. Here are some examples: - あお (a-o) = V-V (vowels can be by themselves!) - さくら (sa-ku-ra) = CV-CV-CV - せん (se-*n) = CV-*C (n is the only consonant that can be a standalone, and thus, must be a syllable by itself) - あつい (a-tsu-i) = V-CV-V Each character counts as a syllable, and must be read as such. This in turn, makes Japanese not a syllable-timed language (e.g. Spanish, French, Italian), but a mora-timed language. A mora-timed language is similar to a syllable-timed language. The difference is that, in a mora-timed language, each syllable excessively only takes up one timing unit. Now, compare that to, say General American English (or sometimes referred to as Standard American English): 24 consonants in IPA - m, n, ŋ, p, b, t, d, k, g, tʃ, dʒ, f, v, θ, ð, s, z, ʃ, ʒ, h, l, ɹ, j, w 12 vowels in IPA - ɑ, æ, e, ɛ, ə, i, ɪ, o, ɔ, u, ʊ, ʌ 5 diphthongs in IPA - eɪ, oʊ, aɪ, ɔɪ, aʊ We all know that overall, in English, there are consonant clusters (i.e. st, str, br, shr, sk, ch, sch, cr, tr, and etc), and these are present in General American English. So, because of consonant clusters, English speakers speak slower. This makes English a stress-timed language (e.g. Polish, Dutch, German). A stress-timed language is essentially similar to a syllable-timed language. The difference is that, in a stress-timed language, the stressed syllables are said at approximately regular intervals while unstressed syllables shorten to fit the rhythm. Sentence example: "Pronunciation is important." Now, you will read that and find nothing odd about it. But, if you pay close attention, you are putting stressed on certain parts of the words. "pro-nun-ci-A-tion is im-POR-tant." the capitalized parts of the words are where we are putting stressed on the words. English does not have a predictable stress pattern, each word has its own unique stress pattern. If we stressed different parts of the words from that sentence, it will sound odd to us; "pro-NUN-ci-a-tion is im-por-TANT." This is quite long, and I apologize for that. However, I do hope this was informative for you!

For me English comes a little more easier to me than my native language as I spent almost all my time on the Internet, parents mostly spoke with me in English since as long as I can remember, and because of that, I subconsciously got into a habit of even thinking in English. It may sound strange, but now I am actually putting efforts to properly learn my native language and write effortlessly in it.

Same. In my case though, I got very influenced by the internet. I think in English all the time, maybe a bit of my mother tongue subconsciously mixed in. None of the people around me spoke in English though. I think this started during the pandemic, now I even have a hard time conveying what I want to say in my native language because my brain doesn’t know how to translate certain words from English to my native language. I was practically raised by the internet, honestly. Before you tell me to go touch grass, I’m perfectly fine, thank you.

@@TheLordoftheDarkness yeah. I'm probably shorter bc in writing you have kanji which cuts down on space. If the Furigana was written out it in place of Kanji it'd probably be longer bc each kana is a single syllable are there are a lot of syllables in speech. Also, you have to consider Japanese is heavily context based. You can have single word that could mean a full sentence (in english) or anything without context. I'm just assuming tho that's why
