The measure of "No Koreans allowed!" taken by Watazumi Shrine, the most historic shrine in Tsushima that dates back 1165 years, is not discriminatory against Koreans at all! This shrine has been warning Korean tourists for over 10 years. It was not just the smoking, littering of cigarette butts, and snapping back at the shrine when they were warned, but also assaults by Korean tourists that infuriated the shrine in Tsushima. It was also the urination and defecation on the shrine grounds. I want people to understand the limits of this shrine's patience.

I think, you mistake Tsushima with Takeshima (or Dokdo or Liancour Rocks). There never has been any Korean settlement on Tsushima and it's been under Japanese sovereignity for over 1,400 years... with short and brutal occupations by the Mongols and a failed invasion by Joseon forces. And while the government of Rhee demanded the island to be handed over, after WWII, this claim was dropped and the status of Tsushima as Japanese Territory confirmed.

Honestly, if they feel the need to do this, it means that there’s a problem that is bad enough that this became in necessity. I think Japan’s next step is to institute a visa system that requires tourists to state whether or not they plan on participating in any streaming activities and if so, that means they have to get a business visa. If you have a social media channel that is monetized, they would require you to declare that and in order to be allowed to stream you would need to get a visa that allows you to do so. I honestly believe the visa process would be the best bet they could add an education module to it that teaches people what is expected when they come to Japan and what is not acceptable. It’s sad that it has to go that route, but I don’t know what else they’re gonna do. They need tourism. Their economy is in the dumps.

Rule of thumb for me regarding historical sensitive areas, hotspots and topics - the fact that it happened cannot be used as an excuse for someone to act like a dickhead. Then again, for this particular case, banning people based on nationality is just racism, pure and simple. It's not justifiable, and should not be allowed. If they wanna ban all tourists, that'd be more understandable. But you know, these spats and problems.... I already predicted it'd happen ages ago, and it'll continue happening for the foreseeable future. There are simply too many places in Japan that are completely unprepared for the tourism influx that is happening right now. To me it feels that it's not only that government and people are overly optimistic about it - sometimes it gets down to plain ignorance. People just don't know how bad things can go when you have a massive influx of people from other cultures coming around. Like Chris said many times already, it's not that tourists are evil. It's that at those volumes, even if a fraction of a percent do some sh*t there, it's gonna look bad as a whole. Japanese people are just too used to... Japanese people and tourists. People who shares their values, their unwritten rules, their understanding of cultural norms. This situation is a train in a collision course to a wall. Anyways, next topic... short form videos are poised to become bigger, for two major factors - first, they are relatively new. In comparison to others I mean. Second, it's a psychological thing, in the same line as clickbait. It's attention grabbing, and a lot of it is entertainment without content, so it's extremely easy to consume. Much like social media did in the past, the key factor is being very accessible. It will get more people because you just have to click the app icon and it conveniently start throwing things at your face without any extra effort. Thing is - just because people like it, doesn't mean it's a good thing. Now, personally, I don't really have a problem with it being entertainment for entertainment's sake. Even though I don't like short form stuff like TikTok, KZfaq Shorts, and didn't like Vine when it first came about (remember that?), I'm also not against people consuming moderately entertainment for entertainment's sake. I also do plenty of that. But I do have a personal preference to stuff that is not this limited. For instance, I also don't like microblogging. And I'm specifically saying microblogging because I hate Twitter/X these days for entirely other reasons. I just don't like when these things take over the place of others. For instance, I'm fine with social media as long as it's not used as source of news. Once it became a source of news for lots of people, I just abandoned it all. It was fine to me until it became that. I used it when it was a place to share photos and status with family and friends. Once all the other crap came crashing in, with algorithms only reinforcing the bad usage of it, and then all the data collection schemes... that's when it ceased to be "social media" for me. It's now just a collective garbage dump. I dunno enough to talk about TikTok and KZfaq Shorts, but for instance, if it's about silly entertainment like car pool, people dancing to music, pet videos, and stuff like that, it's fine. Problem is when stuff like the stupid dangerous challenges, propaganda, misinformation and all the other crap comes around and take over. Even bigger problem is when you get people who gets all the information in their lives from those. No one will ever convince me that social media and short form is the place to get serious information from. I really fear for future generations and kids who are growing up consuming content only from those platforms. It's dangerously addictive, it gives a very narrowminded view on life, and it's too often not a good influence on anyone. It's also completely unregulated and the perfect place to breed scammers, opportunists and criminals. I'm particularly averse to algorithmic recommendation on anything. Doesn't matter if it's TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, or KZfaq itself. They all don't have any measure of reasonability in what they are throwing at people, and this is a major problematic component of social networks in general today. They are designed for engagement and advertisement revenue, and have absolutely zero consideration on the mental health and benefits to those consuming it. It's an algorithm that exploits the worst tendencies in people to show them the worst possible content so people get addicted to it. So I personally stay far far faaar away from "Trending" pages, and systems that throw whatever they think is engaging at you non-stop.

@noxnox74452 ай бұрын
If you want to see real geisha and maiko, you can see them by going directly to events and festivals in Kyoto. As a tourist, it is inherently wrong to stalk them like a stalker, wanting to see their daily lives, so please watch them at work. There are also some complex events for foreigners that are held in English, where you can take pictures, and there are many other ways to do it right. Gion Corner is the most famous event, and the Gion Festival (starting soon) is the most famous festival, so if you are interested, check it out. Also, as for the shrines that are off limits to certain people on the island, there are very historical and political issues involved, and it is not a tourist issue. I feel like their goal is to harass and cause conflict by falsely claiming to be tourists, and then create exactly this kind of situation so that it makes the news and they can cry racism.

Pretty grim that the relationship between Korea and Japan still has the old animosity. Lots of baggage there. Nonetheless, it’s just wrong to inflict disrespect while demanding the same for yourself-especially at a culturally sensitive site. Imagine the same behavior happening in Dubai. Right? How would you imagine that playing out? I’ve seen less receive a far worse response there.

Hi Chris, I have a question. Or more of a short essay perhaps hehe. What did you mean with the "East Asia. There's all sorts of things going on, all sorts of discrimination from all countries and some mortifying conversations I've had" comment? Then Pete replying "fear of the other" and Chris again: "I don't really know where to stand on this really other than it's unfortunate innit." I think it's very important to be clear what all of this is about than just "countries/people hating on each other". A lot of East Asian countries were colonized/brutally treated/t*rtured/k*lled (up to 30 million people were k*lled) by the Japanese during WW 2 and earlier, and there are still people living now that experienced those times. Japan never apologized nor did some kind of reparation to their victims and Japanese kids don't even learn about it in school (we don't either in the West barely when talking about WW2 btw). Japanese politicians/government don't recognize what they did either, they even give praise to war criminals and even today there's a lot of racisim against Korean/Chinese, and not to speak about S-E Asian people. Of course what a repressive government and society like China is doing sometimes against Japan for weird reasons (like for example not buying fish after the Hiroshima water got released into the ocean) is just stupid. But China does similar things to Korea as well (for example boycotting Korean products after they were to install THAAD). You should be able to talk about things in a more nuanced fashion without saying that "its unfortunate" and that you don't know where to stand on this and that "everyone just hates each other", because in that way you miss a lot of things that maybe you should condemn or care about. It's easy, you can both criticize the Chinese dictatorship and their policies, as well as condemn Japan for its behavior in regards to the war crimes etc. that it has committed before, as well as racism in Japan. I'm not saying it's okay to wreck havoc on a temple because of this (but maybe it could be if war criminals were buried and still celebrated there) but please do more research on East Asian and S-E history, or be more clear about what you mean.

I also don't like shorts. You don't actually get any real content. 10-30 minute videos are the best, van be longer depending on what the video is.
