FYI as you guys have noticed, had some audio issues. For reasons unbeknownst to us, the software switched to airpods input rather than the super mega microphone on my end. Apologies for that, from now on, no more airpods for anyone.

If you have a decent noise-gate set up, you should be able to hear Pete's voice from the laptop without it being caught by the microphone, and that mic is already very good at rejecting audio behind it of course. Or you could of course suffer from the classic headphone dent as some have lol

Haha no way!! I'm Yuki, I had just come out from my break and was checking the shop floor, I was so unsure if it was Pete or a doppleganger so I was so conflicted if to even ask, had no clue you live that local to me. If you see this it was wonderful to meet you Pete and I'll be sure to say hi and follow you around the shop again, lol, joking of course. Very long time watcher of Chris' stuff and it was cool to meet one of you out and about!

I’m going to note that Brits seem to be far more casual towards cemeteries and enjoy walking through them than some other places. As a Canadian, I can state that around here they purposefully design it so that cemeteries discourage random pedestrians. You only enter them if you have loved ones buried there.

Agreed, from the American Midwest. I have walked around a couple for exercise and have seen people with those cross-country ski poles powering around occasionally. I've only done it a few times as an attempt to get more exercise, but I always feel eerie while strolling around. The grounds are almost too peaceful, too perfectly maintained.

Historically speaking, the village church (and pub!) were at the heart of every British community until the modern era. In the middle ages they were used for compulsory archery practice after church on Sunday! These days a lot of people visit because of their historical importance. When I was a kid our local church was built in 1086! It was interesting to go inside and “gravely read” the headstones and see the names of one’s ancestors.

Thanks for this comment I was so confused by this. I couldn’t even imagine just strolling around a cemetery. If I’m not visiting someone I’m staying well away. I would certainly be just as confused as the man in the story if I saw someone just aimlessly strolling around.

I get anxiety a lot and from what I can tell the main reasons are; hangovers, a lacking diet, insufficient exercise and sunlight, incapability to face mortality. The first three are my usual causes of anxiety, the last one only rears it's ugly head when I'm contented and not anxious.

If I am forced to do self checkout, or forced to do a job for free that others are paid for, I tend to do a bad job at it. It's not my fault that I miss more then half the items when I am checking myself out. I was never trained correctly. I guess they shouldn't force me to do a job I am bad at. Lucky for the person I am checking out though, they scored.

That is a lovely walk. Met a very friendly cat in the cemetery. It is definitely different from Western cemeteries which can feel gothic even depressing.. Very peaceful and calming. Only the sound of sirens broke the tranquillity. As for robots they are becoming more common for surgical procedures (it is my job to help procure them). Maybe the tender documentation should include no murderous AI as part of the selection criteria.

If you are ever asked why you are at a Japanese cemetery, just say you heard there was an "undoukai kai" (sports festival). It is a line from a well known manga/anime theme song for ゲゲゲの鬼太郎 (gegege no kitaro). It might get you a laugh, or it might get you an even stranger look if they do not catch the reference.

I’ve had a similar experience in Japan in regards to that lollipop story. Had a random elderly couple give me and my family a bunch of random hard sweets. I was suspicious of it and didn’t eat it, another family member wasn’t fussed and ate it…. It seemed it was a form of sugar free alternative candy that gave him the shits. Lesson learned.

There is an episode of a famous sci-fi series which has a story not unlike the gyoza issue mentioned n this podcast. An alien race devlopes a defence system that was mean to defend them against outsider and to protect them, but, the person they used as a template had a small genetic defect and the creation ended up wiping out the entire race as it saw all of them as "impure".

I mean, think about the jobs we are talking about. Cashier, inspecting dumplings? Let’s be honest who wants to actually do these jobs? We as a society has been looking down on these labor jobs as the last resort for people who failed everywhere else in life and low value overseas workers. If we cannot appreciate these jobs and give decent living to the people doing it, then it is just natural that we cut out that entire workforce and replace them with machines, which makes it a good thing that the population is declining.

If someone would ask me why I was in Yanaka cemetery, I would tell them that I was there to watch the five-story pagoda. ... and it would be true, in my case. One mission I have for my trip to Japan is to retake new photos matching a collection of vintage post cards I have. It does not matter that the pagoda is no longer there: if I can line up the shot and it is different, the difference will just be effectful in that way.
