Phil Harding isn't a scientist, he's a master craftsman. His grasp of *how to do archaeology* is awesome.

That commentary by Phil was probably equal to a semester's lecture in a university archaeology class.

I’ve taken a field school and an archeological methods course and I learned more about troweling in these 8 minutes than I did in TWO semesters of an archeology program

I enjoy people who executives any task with so much passion as Phil. Pride for a profession is sometimes a horrible thing, but this is just proper good stuff.

Indeed Phil is a master

I would think if you are on a 3 day dig versus weeks or months on a dig it would influence how quickly you would scrape. I was on a 12 day part of a dig at a Welsh castle and the boss had to keep telling us amateurs to slow down and not go deeper.

Notice the copper bracelet on Phil's trowel arm. I bet he has some stiffness in that joint after a lifetime in the trenches.

2:10 to my highly untrained eye that looks like bones near Phil's left foot, almost like a finger.

Archaeology summarised ... now go and do the second year of an archaeology course ... you've just done the first year
