Have been using this lens for the past two months. The field of view seemed marginally wider than 9mm Olympus body cap lens but compared just 1 shot. So I believe the field of view should be closer to a 9mm lens instead of the 10mm Rob mentioned unless the 9mm body cap lens itself was incorrect. Optically it was better than the body cap lens obviously. Sad that TTartisan had the ND16 but they stopped including it with the purchase. Great review by the way Rob.

Hi Rob. I'm a long time subscriber and really appreciate the time and effort that you put in to sharing your knowledge of photography and, in particular, all things M43. For its price, this looks like a really fun lens. After using or for a couple of years has your opinion changed, or have you seen better M43 'fisheye' alternatives in this price range? I already have the excellent Panasonic/Leica 8-18mm (FF equiv. 16-36mm), but this TTArtisan APSC lens would seem to be about the equivalent of around 11mm on my M43 Lumix G9.
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 2 ай бұрын
7.5mm would be 15mm on m4/3. If you already have the 8-18mm, I don't think you need this lens.

Hello Rob, thank you for this review. Have you tried using focus peaking on your E-m5 MK2 with this lens, and if yes, did it work? I personally don't see much focus peaking happening in my Oly EM-1 MK2 viewfinder or on the screen, when I use manual lenses, like a fisheye or even a 35 mm. Especially for manual lenses, focus peaking is very useful. Thanks for any input you can give.
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 2 жыл бұрын
Focus peaking works well for longer focal lengths, like 25mm and higher. The lens also needs to be sharp. Softer lenses don't show the peaking color very well. On wide angle lenses, focus peaking is not much use, even if it's working.

In the compare section with the oly 8mm it looks like you compare all stops on oly with f/2 on the TTartiasan
@rickbear7249
@rickbear7249 2 жыл бұрын
That's because the big upgrade you're paying for in the Olympus is really its superior maximum aperture. If you review the higher apertures, you'll find very little difference for most people. That said, it's difficult to compare a Ford with a Ferrari. There are differences, but few will notice them
@janaasgaard275
@janaasgaard275 2 жыл бұрын
I know about the difference, When he compared in lightroom he said that the pictures where at the same f-stop, But TTArtisan pictures was only f/2.
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, Jan. Sorry for the confusion. The f/2 display for the ttartisan was a static value since the lens itself doesn't have electrical contacts to communicate what the actual f/stop was. However, I did match the f/stop values for comparison in the review.

A very interesting review. I have always wanted to have a fisheye lens. The price point makes it now possible. It looks like a lens that I would be able to make some interesting images without breaking the bank. Unfortunately, in the UK the lens is on back order. Anyway, thanks Rob for bringing this and other videos that show the possibilities with the M43 system.

Regarding the lens filter placement, I think there is a range of such filters out there. Can’t remember who makes them so I will be using the search engine in a moment. 🙏🏼👍🏼😊 Looking directly into the sun… like Clint Eastwood or Joe Biden. The deep blue sky captured with the Oly lens appears greyish in the TT image of the same scene.

A light pollution filter for this lens would be nice. I didn't notice any issues with color in general, but I do see what you mean in the sky. It might just be a slight exposure difference.

I am afraid you have compared corner sharpness of these two lenses looking near the corner of TTArtisans and somewhere midway image on Olympus. The latter has much wider AoV. The same branches of the trees are at very different portions of the FoV on both of these lenses.

There is a newer version of the 7artisans 7.5mm f2.8 (TTArtisan only has this F2 Version). The new MkII Version of the 7Artisans has much improved optics in comparison to the older one (Hoya ED elements f.ex.)

I was stressing trying to figure out how to afford the Oly 8 mm Pro as I worked like to dabble into Real Estate Photography. At this point my widest lens are the Oly 12-40mm Pro and the LUMIX 12-32 kit lens. I also have a Oly 17 mm. I had ordered the TT Lens but did not get the the one for M 4/3rd. I may reorder as it would be a good lens to build my Real Estate portfolio with along with funds to eventually upgrade to the 8mm Pro. Do you think that’s a good idea or the 12-40 is wide enough?
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 2 жыл бұрын
The 12-40 is not really wide enough. You might consider the 9-18mm from Olympus. Using a fisheye is awkward for framing the shot. It's hard to tell if the lines are straight.
@MichaelGerrard

The field of view being not 'right' - is this only visible on fisheye lenses or do you think the normal lenses of TTArtisans would also have this? What I mean is, would a 25mm give more of a 30mm field of view?
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting question. I just tried my 7artisans 50mm f/0.95 against my Oly 40-150mm kit lens at 50mm. It was spot on. I tried my Ziess 35mm Nikon F mount against my Oly 12-40mm pro and it was also spot on. So it seems my initial hypothesis of the TTartisan being made for APSC might be wrong.

When will they add Olympus lenses to their lists in LR already? This is very discriminative of Adobe.
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 2 жыл бұрын
Olympus and Panasonic have the lens profile info built into image files, so no need to create a separate profile in adobe. That said, DxO does provide their own lens profiles info for Olympus & Panasonic which I think are superior to the built in profiles.

And the difference in FoV has nothing to do with aspect ratios. TTArtisans is simpy an APS-C lens with MFT mount. You have to multiply its focal length by the crop factor between these two sensors, which is 1,333. TTArtisans is like 10mm MFT lens but with stereographic fisheye projection it gives us about 150 deg diagonal AoV. But it is crop that matters the most, not the aspect ratio.
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. That all makes sense to me except for multiplying the focal length by the crop factor because the TTArtisans is an APS-C lens on an MFT mount. Taking a 20mm rectilinear lens made for APS-C gives me the same FoV as a 20mm rectilinear lens made for Full Frame when they are put on the same sensor. While the APS-C lens will usually have some vignetting and other issues, I don't think I would multiply the focal length of the lens by 1.5 when I put it on a full frame sensor. As for aspect ratio, wouldn't a 4x3 have a wider horizontal FoV than a 3x4, even though they could have the same crop factor? Hence my logic that a 3x2 would be wider than a 4x3. Obviously I'm not an lens designer and if you have the time would appreciate your feedback. Thanks again.
@przybylskipawel
@przybylskipawel 2 жыл бұрын
@@RobTrek Crop factor between APS=C and M43 is 1.333 (2/1.5) hence 7.5mm APS-C acts on a M43 sensor a bit like 10mm lens designed for M43. M43 sensors have different aspect ratios but their crop factor is calculated based on diagonal angle of view so if anything (all other things being equivalent) they would produce ever so sligtly narrower horizontal AoV than APS-C sensors, which have 3:2 aspect ratio. However the difference in angle of view on M43 sensor between 8mm fisheye lens designed for M43 and 7.5mm fisheye lens designed for APS-C but with M43 mount cannot be atributed to the difference in aspect ratios. That would not make such a huge difference. It is just that from the APS-C-sized image circle you crop only some portion - namely M43 portion being 1.333 times smaller. That is why with the M43 this TTArtisan lens would have only 150 deg (diagonal) AoV whereas most fisheye lenses are designed to have 180 deg diagonal AoV. Another aspect is the horizontal and vertical AoV. Cropping a fisheye image will have different effect on diagonal, horizontal and vertical AoV as fisheye lenses have especially high diagonal AoV compared to rectilinear lenses, while horizontal and vertical AoV are also higher but to a lesser extent. The last thing is that optically there is no such thing as fisheye lenses. There are stereographic fisheye lenses, equidistant fisheye lenses, orthographic fisheye lenses and equisolid angle fisheye lenses. They all have different projections and react differently to cropping. Olympus is the most popular equisolid angle fisheye lense, whereas this TTArtisan, as well as Samyang, Pergear, Risepray etc. happen to be stereographic fisheye lenses which produces most pleasing image projection with least distorted image (IMO best compromise between streching corners and bending sides for faces and sihlouettes). All this contributes to the difference between their AoV on M43 sensor, aspect ration being the least important factor.
