Before they rushed the TU-144 through production, the Soviets stole and copied *large amounts* of information and data from the Concord design team (this is why many Soviet aircraft look like photocopies of aircraft from the west). The TU-144 was an impressive brainchild of Andrei Tupelov, despite the fact that it was a complete and utter commercial failure.

only 6 weeks. Then the Tu-144 had to be completely redesigned with a new wing and fuselage. As the TU-144 program progressed it became more and more like the Concorde The final version even containing Concorde parts purchased directly from France. A request to British Aerospace for assistance in redesigning the engine air intakes was rejected as the technology could have been used for military purposes.

DUSTMYSTIC BLACKMAN you fool we can't even get away from Sol's gravity well. Mutch better chance we blow our selves back into the stone age. Or that the planet dies of human poison, before we can get an unmanned probe to the next closest star. Even then that would just barley see us crawling into the birth of the "interstellar" age. The time to get there with our primitive bottle rocket technology would be measured in centuries. Lets get our own house in order before the age of man is the last. The only way your getting intergalactic is by listening to the Beastie Boys. Lets worry about the swiftly approaching ice age as they run on a train schedule and never seem to be late. One is just about due as the current state of polar shift would indicate. Remember to thank Grandma for all those X-mas sweaters except for the Eskimos we're not gonna make it humans are way too soft and lazy now.

Such a "hurry up and build " design... the thing couldn't even maintain super sonic speeds without continuous afterburners . It was basically a quick design to match concorde but couldn't even come close to competing with concorde. A good concept but a total failure of an aircraft.. Loud, poor fuel efficiency and problematic just look at the times it crashed

TUPOLEV TU-144 and CONCORDE: The two planes are fundamentally different. The TU-144 had double delta wings which allowed the installation of "slats" all over the leading edge of the wing which was straight. Those of the Concorde were in ogival delta which would make the installation of "slats" too complicated if not impossible. On the TU-144 having the engines close to the fuselage and a wingspan of 28.8 meters (compared to 25.6 for the Concorde) this made it possible to have the significantly larger flaps helped by the ailerons which acted as flaperons. All these devices combined with the retractable "canard" wings of the TU-144 allowed it to have take-off speeds but especially in approach and landings significantly lower than those of Concorde and which made it possible to make the approach circuits and landing integrated with the other planes which was not the case with Concorde. The big problem of Concorde was even its very high speed to take off which generated an enormous energy of projection during a burst of a tire. Another serious design flaw was the very great exposure of the kerosene tanks to projections from the landing gear were even the cause of many incidents but three accidents with significant leakage of kerosene, two in 1979 (one in Dakar and the other in Washington/Dulles). In November 1981, the American National transportation Safety Board (NTSB) sent a letter of concern to the French BEA that included safety recommendations for Concorde. This communiqué was the result of the NTSB's investigations of four Air France Concorde incidents during a 20-month period from July 1979 to February 1981. The NTSB described those incidents as "potentially catastrophic," because they were caused by blown tyres during takeoff. During its 27 years in service, Concorde had about 70 tyre- or wheel-related incidents, seven of which caused serious damage to the aircraft or were potentially catastrophic. The most serious accident was in July 2000 in Gonesse (France) that caused 113 deaths and marked the end of the aircraft's prestige. On the TU-144 such an accident would be impossible or would not have had the same consequences, the landing gear, parts of the engine nacelles and the critical places were made with titanium, but at the time titanium metallurgy was unknown in Western Europe, reason why all the structure of the Concorde was in steel and aluminum this material is very light but very fragile to the shocks. Engines are also different, those of TU-144 were double flux turbo-fans, those of Concorde are simple turbo-jets. On landing, its very high speed implied a very special approach and landing procedure, it was necessary to create a vacuum in front of Concorde, which prevented several large aircrafts from landing. The French and British governments paid the airport for the loss of revenue for each plane prevented from landing because the arrival of Concorde, which amounted to extremely expensive operation. Normally this too high speed on take-off but especially on approach and landing would not have allowed him to be certified for the civil service of public passenger transport, it was necessary to obtain a dispensation obtained at the political level (meeting between Nixon and Pompidou in 1973), prestige and the Cold War required. Because of this high speed on approach and landings the supersonic project of the Boeing 2707 had wings of variable geometry (variable sweep wings) on its early version to comply with standard approach and landing procedures. The TU-144 crash in 1973 at the Paris Air Show at Le Bourget: On the first day of the Show, visitors and media representatives were surprised checking the comfort and the width of the cabin, which had 5 seats in front against 4 for the Concorde. The seats on the window side of the Concorde were uncomfortable and only for people of below average height. On the second day the flagship demonstration consisted in the low speed of approach and landing of the TU-144 thanks to the flaps of greater dimension, the ailerons which functioned as flaperons and to the "canard" wings retractable in the nose of the plane allowed the TU-144 to make the approach and landing circuits of standard patterns, integrated in the traffic of the other existing planes which Concorde could not do it without needing very special derogations implying extremelly expensive procedures. A Mirage III photo reconnaissance of the French Air Force, the flight of which, apart from all procedures and regulations of the lounge, had not been communicated to the Soviet delegation, came too close to the TU-144 forcing the pilot in a sudden maneuver which caused the rupture of a ‘canard’ wing. In the poor quality 16 mm film from French TV we see that as the Mirage approaches, pieces of the ‘canard’ wing fall. Due to the low speed of the plane the lift on the wings was no longer assured and the crash became inevitable. The most KZfaq channels (like this one) describing this crash does not show the approach and contact of the Mirage with the TU-144. Any other explanation is smoking to hide the french responsibilities. The French never provided any photos that the Mirage III claimed to take.
