What do you prefer? Tube Amp or Amp Sim?

As much as I love amp sims, tube amps will always be on top. I just prefer hardware, much more inspiring. But at the end of the day, it's all about getting the tone you want. Amp sim or tube amp doesn't matter.

I love my Mr. Hector. I’m from the USA 🇺🇸 and I remember seeing one in the background of a behemoth making of album. Never heard of them before and this is about 11 years ago. This is before Laboga had a reverb store. These were next to impossible to find here and I would search local classifieds eBay, you name it. Then about 4 years ago I found 2 for sale at a guitar store about 3 hours from me. MAde the drive and bought 1 of the two they had for sale. Wish I could have bought both but could only afford 1. Louis Torres bought the other one. The guy that worked at the shop, his dad was friends with the late Adam Laboga and the amps were given to him but since he and his son aren’t brutal metal guys they had no use for them. About a year and a half ago I ordered a camouflage 2x12 and what a killer setup. Killer amps. Glad to see them getting more recognition. Proud owner of one here and it might just be the flavor you are looking for.

You should try OttoAudio's '11 11 11 11" plugin. I'm not affiliate of it by any means, but compared to this plugin, or even neural dsp stuff, it holds it's own. It doesn't emulate any particular amp, it has tons of voicings, and just "goes to eleven" :)

Yeah, 11 11 11 11 is amazing, every preset is killer. I like this one a lot too, but the cab section is a bit underwhelming (apart from Kristian's IR which is awesome as always) which is a shame for a $49 plugin. Will need to think long and hard about this before putting my money down on this.

The problem I have with amp sims is the spatial inconsistency, and I am speaking only about the high gain metal ones...when mono center, most of the sims do an amazing job, but pan it left or right and for some reason they lose the punch and/or definition...double track it (L+R) you get back the punch but huge amounts of fizz appear, escpecially when listening on smaller speakers...eqing guitars leads to lack of fullness and makes guitars sound dull

I think it's probably just listening with eyes, but I think the real amp is a bit more dynamic. Maybe there is some truth to amp sims being "colder" in that the notes feel like they're a similar velocity, and dynamics are more macro than micro. The real amp in this scenario sounds like each note is a bit different, while amp sims in general kinda sound dynamically flat and only feel like they change in mostly loudness and only across large differences. Still prefer amp sims though. 1/500th the price, you can do it at anytime, anywhere and in post, plus no tubes to worry about and you can't annoy people that are around with it. Not to say there isn't some magic to real amps.

Real deal have darker tone, and brighter on air frequencies at the same time, where plugins sound more tighter, muffled and honky. That is how every plugin sounds compare to real deal most of times. But i guess that can bi fixed with post equing, maybe.

To have a successful plugin everything should be perfect.. even effects and cabs. If I am not wrong I think from what I heard the pedals (tubescreamer etc) need more work! Also I hope the dials (treble - bass - mid) work as they should. Lastly I dont like so much the gui. It isn't as practical as in neural dsp.
@spectre5022
@spectre5022 2 жыл бұрын
Using the archetype nolly pedals and is night and day with laboga, but that's supposed to be a complete suite, sad because the ampsim sounds great, but as I said in another comment, having trouble with some pedals like reverb, I seems to eat the sound of the amp, and doesnt "expand" the sound. Same with the screamer pedal, doesn't sound good to me, but again, the amp is great.

@@AuroraDSP I love your approach and the respond. So I will give you my thoughs if they can hep you because we need companies to make better plugins. - So 1st of all check how nice and clean sound the delay and reverbs of Neural. Especially the delay sounds to both my monitors and not in the center. I would like that too..stereo sounding delay (like ping pong) and artificial free. -2nd It would be awesome to know if there is oversampling internal or not. ( like izotope plugins) 3rd. The gui doesn't help that much - an amp - cab like gui would be clear and preferable .. BUT... I love these color themes that you have - reminds me the Cubase and I love it - bravo - 4rd - I hope the dials are responsive (bass-treble-mid etc) and not adding artificial flavor!! - Lastly not much companies have achieved or perfected the overdrives - boost (etc - pedals) We need that.. I wish I would help you with all that!!

@@MatthiasBuesing sorry but for me Neural had great plugins but on some case its great marketing more that great products (like QC) . This plugin its sim from very specific amp (you may not like this characteristic) . And work great for me. To compare I have FM3 with a lot of great amps sim and this plugin do job well. Laboga its great for low tunning.

@@Sleeep1 Yeah they are kinda hyped. But I really think they have something magic in their code 🤷🏻‍♂️ Had the Mr. hector myself a few years ago and was enthusiastic that a official plugin is about to be released. Unfortunately the sound disappointed me…

I have the real amp and 2x12 in front of me and play it daily and this plug in doesn’t do this amp any favors. Disappointing in my opinion.

The problem is that playing through sims really effects ones actual playing abilities...you can believe you really got your muteing down but in fact you suck when you move to a real amp. Sims have a quality of noise cancelling not enjoyed on real amps and it will really discourage you when you hear your true playing and how bad you really are at muteing....nope sims are good to use but NOT a true reflection of your skills

I truly believe that’s a myth. I have been using both with countless guitarists in the studio for ages and really can’t find any proof for that.

That's kinda bollocks. I've used both for years and I've never had that.
