"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZfaq. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZfaq, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode. “That Raytheon decided they don’t hate gays or trans people - frankly, I don’t really give a shit what their take on that is..."

If you actually listen to what he was to say on a multitude of topics (politics often being one of the subjects he visits least), it's tough not to give him credit for thinking rigorously and being willing to change his mind when presented with compelling evidence or arguments against one of his positions. He's often in conversation with experts at the top of their field and not only holds his own, but frequently stands on close-to-level ground with them, meaningfully contributing to the conversation instead of being the pure interviewer. I don't think Sam Harris is dumb, but he didn't even do the research on his own Neuroscience PhD and his thesis has been torn apart pretty brutally by actual academics (like William Briggs). His undergraduate studies were in philosophy, not Neuroscience, and frankly I (nor anyone else) has any idea how he got into the PhD program at UCLA (it's very possible that he got due to his family's money/connections). He hasn't published any research since his questionable PhD.... so, no, he's not really a neuroscientist.

So true. I call myself an atheist, but I do not make any assertive claims to the effect that "there is no God." I have no clue, any more than any other human being, about who are what might lie at the core, the center of the universe. It might in fact be some sort of cosmic deity or energy. What I thoroughly reject is the silly, childish, nonsensical anthropomorphic God of the theistic religions, a sort of invisible granddaddy up in the sky who condemns people to an eternity in hell if they do not believe in him or his virgin-born son. I am willing to stake my life on my belief that that sort of God does not exist. And even if he did, I would reject him as the sadistic tyrant that he is. I've listened to Sam for over 6 years and have heard almost all his stuff, mostly debates. He's helped me greatly with all the meditation stuff. It doesn't amaze me that the Hunter Biden thing he said (which was indeed weird) was taken out of context, the point he was making is that he wouldn't care about it to the effect on whether to vote for Biden or not, this is not Hunter who will be president. So his point gets across even if the wording was indeed weird, he should've known better as it's always easy to criticize the atheist who doesn't follow any group in a tribal way, he literally explains himself which is more than most people do, even with Trump I say, who cares? Besides of him doing it in his own freedom (Pun intended), I still haven't seen someone making a counter argument for something he has said about Trump, I only read "he is obsessed with Trump" like if the most powerful person in the planet to have at his hand nuclear codes n shit while also being impulsive and dumb wouldn't be something worth obsessing about or talk about repetitively. I like him for his views on religion, regarding which I think he is brilliant, but not his politics. He is so rabidly anti-Muslim that he was a huge cheerleader for the "war on terror," even though we all know it was based on the lies of our government. He seems to be perfectly okay with killing as many Muslims as possible, simply because they MIGHT pose a terrorist threat if we don't kill them first. I don't like the religion of Islam any more or less than I do Christianity, but I do not sanction the killing of any extremists just for the sake of being rid of them. I'm an atheist and although I've read some of his books I've never liked Harris because he comes off as a low-key Neocon/Zio. Years ago when he released his book 'The End of Faith' in virtually EVERY talk that he gave, he would start out by stating that "it's not rational to 'respect' someone's belief simply because they hold them. We must evaluate the evidence as to why the beliefs are held". Fair enough, but then he would go on to say 'Take hollow cost deniers.... we do NOT respect their beliefs...' He did this in multiple lectures and in my mind I said 'WHOA!!!! That's a pretty big non-sequitur" You're here condemning faith as an of irrational belief based on little to no evidence. Well, if there ever was a secular article of faith in the modern world that people are MANDATED to believe on the pain of imprisonment, it's the event that he mentioned. Why, I wondered, didn't he cite the denial of the ARMENIAN genocide as an example of what not to respect? This made me look into Harris' background and what I found confirmed my suspicions.

I don't know, I think that Kyle is underselling how aligned his own and Sam's views are. I have listened to both a fair amount, and I really think he is exaggerating the differences in his mind. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think if you mapped out their beliefs and positions on ideas and policies, I feel like you'd get greater than 80% match. Probably higher on the more important things. I'm not even sure I'd call Sam a "centrist." Maybe. But he has quite strongly advocated for Minimum Basic Income, for example, which is pretty far left. (Or maybe I'm just underestimating how far left Kyle is. That's possible too.) I even doubt that Sam would even register as more "anti-theist" than Kyle, if you drilled down on it. And it definitely feels like a huge understatement to say that Sam's positions are "less" dismissable than Tucker and Charlie. That's like saying that Lake Michigan is "smaller" than the Pacific Ocean. I mean, it's Tucker Carlson. The man is a consummate reactionary anti-intellectual, and has not seriously thought through ANY of the positions that he parrots for his audience. His ideas about morals is science based and has nothing to do with atheism. I love how these idiots always conflate science with atheist. As for the comfort of religion? We can provide secular alternatives like community and therapy.

My mom goes to church every Sunday. She's Pro-Choice, she supports equal rights for all, she shows empathy towards people that are different from her. She believes in G-d, and she believes that Jesus did exist, and that he was an enlightened, religious leader/prophet. She goes to church because it makes her feel good. She likes the music, she likes the routine, she likes the sermon, usually. She gets something real out if her religion, something tangible. To her, the existence of this or the probability of that, are insignificant, moot points. That's not why she practices Christianity.
