Hi, I’ve been considering moving to Tucson but I have a question regarding the weather and potted plants. I enjoy growing succulents and cacti and I keep them in pots. Watching this video made me think they would get destroyed. Is it even possible to keep them outside? Would covered patio protect them? Can you share what set up people use if they enjoy keeping some outdoor plants in pots? Thank you!

Hey there thanks so much for reaching out! Sadly, I am not great with plants myself, but I will tell you that tons of plants grow quite nicely in this climate. Everything from cactus to citrus trees to herbs to desert plantings… A lot of people have potted plants that survive quite nicely. Some plants need more shade than others. Some people enclose their back porches and keep their potted plants in those Arizona rooms during certain times of the year. The nice thing is that there are many nurseries in Tucson, and the people working in the nurseries are very knowledgeable about local plants and are very helpful for anyone with questions, especially those new to the climate.

Are power outages common? Is a generator a good idea?

Power outages are certainly not uncommon, especially during monsoon season. It depends on where you live, but we have been without power for anywhere from a few minutes to many many hours. We do not have a generator, but my parents do and they have gotten good use out of it throughout the years. I don’t think it’s a bad idea.

So is Phoenix a place that flood very often?

If I’m being completely honest, I don’t know much about Phoenix and their flooding because I have never lived in Phoenix, but I have heard from people who live there, that Phoenix and some of the suburbs get less rain than Tucson does, but I know they have similar soil to ours and they are in a valley just as we are but their elevation is lower so I’m not sure if any of that changes their possibilities for flooding. Keep in mind that we don’t have the same types of flooding that happen in places that get hurricanes, etc. We get things like soil erosion after floods and we also have flooding in our washes and canyons which can lead to dangerous situations for people who are driving or hiking. but the flooding does not last long and is almost always gone within a few hours, and certainly within 24 hours

Sometimes tornadoes can occur in Tucson

Thanks for the view and comment. Arizona averages about three actual tornadoes a year. Most of the tornadoes in Tucson are F0 or F1 tornadoes on the Fujita Scale. Fortunately for us, our dry air rarely provides enough moisture to fuel a tornado, and when it does it is mild. Thanks again for checking out the channel, and have a happy holiday season!

I have a question about mold. As a realtor, and just a lifelong Tucson local, what's your brutally honest take on moldy home risks in Tucson? I'm looking to move to the desert after years of dealing with severe mold poisoning from multiple moldy homes, and my main question about Tucson is if mold risk there is high from the monsoons or not. Thanks for your time!

Hello, feel free to reach out to me directly so we can talk more about this, (and please know that I am not a mold specialist and will gladly give your some names of professionals here who can discuss this in my detail), but it is my understanding after sitting in on hundreds of home inspections throughout the years, that mold is different here than other places because we are a dry climate, so it does not grow the same way as more humid places. I have had clients here find mold in inspections (usually due to roof leaks or leaks under sinks). The source of the mold (the leak) was fixed, then the drywall was removed, and then the problem was solved in those cases. However there are mold inspectors here who will inspect homes if you are interested in that. Like I said l, feel free to call me and we can talk more if you’d like. Thanks!
