She is a survivor. She overcame her early troubles, had a relatively long career with critical acclaim for her acting, if not always for her films, a long life, and she hung onto her money. I think she’s smarter than most actresses.

@chumdog90 - I vaguely remember the bright and cheerful sponsor's song, "Drive your Chevrolet across the USA, America's the greatest land of all!" She sang it with such gust and sincerity. But I had not realized until just this very minute that her talk-show charm lay in the natural, unforced manner of her conversation. Dinah was not "on." She was not "performing" the role of being a talk show guest. She was just herself and that was no naturally lovely!

One-of-a-kind actress. Tuesday Weld. I admire her free spirited independence. She is a great actress. So cool and a natural beauty. Lord Love a Duck is a favorite of mine. Also, loved her as Thalia Menninger in The Dobie Gillis Show. I must also add that A Safe Place is actually a fascinating movie. It's very artsy and bizarre so kind of got dismissed by the mainstream critics. But, the visuals and camera shots of Tuesday Weld are breathtaking in this movie and she is terrific in it as is the rest of the cast. You have to sort of watch A Safe Place a few times and allow yourself to interpret the movie the way you want. Anyway, a must for Tuesday Weld fans. One of her grandfathers was African-Ameriacn and in our society that makes her fully A-A. This is definitely a plus for a celebrity to be this today. Carol Channing & Chita Rivera revealed they were African-Americans at the end of their lives. Tuesday should too! Especially since she convinced the world (as far as a starlet lost in the shadow like so many of Sandra Dee back in the day) she was the white All-American girl. xox

I don’t think “bimbo” is the right term for her early characters, which are usually described as “sex kitten.” She was sexy, but always had good dialogue in her roles. These roles served her well until she grew into more serious characters. I was impressed with her work in the televised play “The Rainmaker,” which is completely against type. She had a fairly long career because of her acting ability.

Dinah Shore was a magnificent singer from the time she was still a teenager. A lot of older people tend to be dismissive simply because her TV show in the 50s was connected with Chevrolet. I love Faye Dunaway as Bonnie Parker, but Tuesday Weld would've been great.
@waynej26083 жыл бұрын
Agree. I'm a huge fan of both actresses, but I also think that Tuesday would've been a better fit, as Bonnie. She definitely had the acting chops, on par with Faye. She also is closer, physically to Bonnie Parker. But, it's water under the bridge. Tuesday never appeared to fully embrace the whole 'star trip'. I I once read that she passed on the part, anticipating it would be a major hit, and didn't want all the notoriety, that would go with it. She gravitated towards smaller, independent type films like Play it as it Lays, Pretty Poison, Serial... Her films were interesting and worthwhile and she always turned in a first rate performance. I thought she was brilliant in Looking for Mr. Goodbar, playing a supporting role, as Diane Keaton's (equally awesome) younger sister.

It's funny, I noticed later that Tuesday sometimes speaks a little like Ruth Gordon. And of course, she was also the first, or one of the first, choices for Lolita, as was Hayley Mills. Weld is in a vanguard all her own here, confidently and without shame revealing her emergence from dysfunction and alcohol dependency in a confessional style that (five years before Betty Ford's honesty made dependency confession palatable) most celebrities would take another fifteen years to master on the talk show-book promo circuit; the difference is that here she has nothing to gain other than her own honesty - she's not working for career capital, only finding a gentle wholistic voice for talking about how screwed up fame can be (and, again, way ahead of her time, turning down a major role because she needed time with her kid) - amazing.
@fredbloggs60802 жыл бұрын
She also said about that and another, that she turned down Bonnie and Clyde because she was nursing, but also because it reeked of success--and did they think she really wanted that? Randy V. corrected me : the movie I mentioned below is "I Walk the Line". - Thanks Randy! - I hope you think as highly of it as I do. - Sometimes, I think, that without being obsessed with a film, it does one well to view it a few times. - (Do we look only once at a fine painting, and walk on by? - ...Probably we do. But...) The more I watch her performance, the more impressed I am by the subtleties of Miss Weld's performance, and ambiguity of her character. - I tried to read the book, and couldn't get into it. - This is a wonderful example of why some screenwriters, - some very good ones, can realign a book and give it a clean, aesthetic line. - Again, thanks Randy. I hope more people watch the movie.
@randyventresca41529 жыл бұрын
Gail Jarvis I Walk the Line is one of my favorite Tuesday films also. She is so hypnotic and yet dangerous in a sort of innocent and naïve way. A critic once said the greatness of Tuesday Weld is that you don't know she is acting. She becomes the character that she plays. She has a vulnerability on-screen that make you care about her even when she plays a very flawed person. Tuesday never over-acted nor did she prefer the over-the-top hysterics "trap" that some actors fall into. She also did great work on television. But, in my opinion, her best motion picture run was between 1966 and 1972 with Lord Love a Duck, Pretty Poison, I Walk the Line, A Safe Place and Play It As It Lays. Tuesday turned down a lot of famous roles and instead took a path less taken. Some of her movies are an acquired taste but she is usually the best thing in them:) The clip shown on Dick Cavett is strange but it makes more sense if you see the entire movie. Tuesday is very good in A Safe Place although the movie may be too artsy and strange for some people. And, the camera shots of her in this movie are stunning. But, going back to I Walk the Line; I remember first seeing this move and thinking it might have some sappy Hollywood ending. Instead, we get Alma (Tuesday) putting an end to that notion once and for all;)

Dinah was dropped by Capitol in 1962 and recorded only a handful of albums over the next two decades. She recorded for friend Frank Sinatra's Reprise label in 1965, (Project 3, 1967), (Decca, 1969), (Stanyan, 1975), and , a double LP for Capitol in 1976. She recorded this album at the height of her talk show fame, and it featured her take on contemporary hits such as "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover", "The Hungry Years", and "Theme from (Do You Know Where You're Going To)". Her final studio album was released in 1979, for the Children's Television Workshop

When she was a regular on the Doby Gillis show in the 1960's, I had a super crush on her.

I mostly remember her from the movie "Looking for Mr. Goodbar." This must've been several years before that.

I was too young to realize how beautiful Dinah Shore was or how sexy her voice.

Funny!!! people say "she had so much potential" and how she (Tuesday) could have and should have.To me, this makes no sense, she did what her 'potential' permitted her to do, and that seems a lot more than many other beautiful young women that stumbled into 'fame traps' where dreams turned into nightmares .The impression I have of her in this interview is that her hippie influences and free spirit was much stronger than the glittering Hollywood lifestyle. Beauty can take a wrong turn up in them there hills.......gotta love those 70's commercials and promos.

I just realized what I really like about Dick Cavett-- he always seemed to be amused in a sort of off-world way by the commercials of the day. As if he really was from 'somewhere else' , and some other time. But he does this is such a way that it's never demeaning to others. Admirable.
