While our other trucks have been proudly sporting the Alpha roof tent from TuffStuff. I have been patiently waiting for the right tent to come along for the roof of my 2006 4th Gen 4Runner. Well, it's finally happened! The Alpha II is a smaller version of the tried and true Alpha tent. This makes it a better option if you are looking for a tent that will leave extra room on your roof for other gear. The Alpha II is a 2-3 person tent and, in my experience, comfortably accommodates two adult and a child.

Awesome walk around and this is definitely intriguing, especially for the price. What type of roof rack are you sporting? I have a 4th gen 4runner with stock racks and am trying to figure out which rack would make the most sense. I really like how you mounted your Maxxtracks. Congrats! You’re going to love it!! The tank is the new WaterPORT Weekender. They’re the best. All the WaterPORT tanks self pressurize when you fill them with your garden hose. And you can use the pump cap to give it more pressure when the water gets low. I have their 4 gallon and a couple of their original 2.5 gallon tanks. They all work great.

Where did you get your cross rails? Talked with rep. and it was brought to my attention that I need to buy them and Tuff stuff does not sale them. Was also told you can not change orientation of the rails that are mounted on the bottom of the tent.
@TrailBendersOverland
@TrailBendersOverland 3 жыл бұрын
If you are talking about the cross bars on my roof rack.. those are just the cross bars on my diy rack. Similar to cross bars on any rack. You don't need to get cross bars from anyone specific but you will want a good strong rack. People do put tents on stock racks, but I don't trust stock roof racks. That's why I made the DIY one. They probably told you that you can't turn the mount bars for liability reasons. If you have the ability to cut metal then I don't see why you couldn't unbolt the rails, turn them, cut them shorter, and bolt the back in. You would also need to drill new holes in the mount rails after you turn them. Nothing crazy though. Feel free to give us a call 760-492-4170 if you have more questions. Ask for Dillan.

Thanks for the update, so the bottom is strong enough to hold the weight just in your opinion if I rotate the rail?
@TrailBendersOverland
@TrailBendersOverland 3 жыл бұрын
The alpha II I feel like you’d be okay. It’s not exactly how it was design but I don’t think you’d break it. You could consider bracing it underneath with a piece of unistrut to keep the center from flexing since bars won’t really be there the same. What’s the reason for wanting to turn them? Most roof racks are setup for the tent to mount the way it is.

The shell is hard. Not the whole tent. Turtles have hard shells too but they’re soft inside. Their soft inside don’t mean that their shell isn’t hard. In fact the descriptor “shell” means hard protective outer case. So this I would 100% be a hard shell tent.

I think things are usually named with what function and purpose they serve first for the majority of people who use them. If these were intended for rock crawlers who don’t want to see on top of their truck then you would be correct, sort of. Watch our Gladiator in our winter 4x4 jamboree videos and it’d prove your concept/statement incorrect. That all said, most people will use these for camping and off-roading where the cog won’t be affected enough to hurt their experience. Because of that, it would be silly to call the tent something that doesn’t apply to most people.
