'TUGS' is the story of the daily working life of a fleet of tugboats in an international harbour in the 1920's. The story is told through the adventures of Captain Star's fleet of seven Star Tugs and the rivalry with the keenest competitors, Captain Zero's fleet of five Z-Stacks who display the darker side of the tugboat industry in an era that was both energetic and full of nostalgia. It was a transitional time when steam was in its heyday, quickly replacing sail and soon to be surpassed by diesel.
'TUGS: A Bigg Retrospective' is the definite film, telling the detailed story into how the 1989 cult classic TV Series; 'TUGS' was brought to our TV screen and how it survived beyond its premature end.

Amendment to credits - Some of the photographs and scripts that were shown throughout this film were digitised by the online group, TheTUGSProject. They were meant to be acknowledge in the Materials and Special Thanks credits, but were sadly missed off in the Final Cut. - Also in the final end credit, fan interviewee, Michael White wasn’t credited for his appearance in the finished product. Apologises to all concerned.

Seeing the original voice actors getting interviewed in this documentary blew my mind away alongside the fans of both Thomas and TUGS on both SiF and KZfaq. The rest of the documentary is so surreal and I couldn't help but shed a tear at the end. It's too bad we never got to see Robert Cardona get interviewed cause I would've loved to see him back in the spotlight again.

The structure of the doc was very nicely done. The ending “thank yous” really did hammer down how much of an impact TUGS has on people, even decades later. It was really sweet. All of the new crew insights, photos, concept art and footage were all a superb treat! Well done and long live this majestic series for more decades to come - “keep the dream alive”.

Great job on the documentary! It was an absolute joy watching, very well done! For anyone wondering who the fan is that sent the miniature replica of Sunshine to Shaun Prendergast, I can confirm that I am the individual! When I finished the model in spring 2022, I contacted Shaun if he would like it for a souvenir and he kindly accepted it. I shipped it to him. But at the time, he wasn't around to pick up when it arrived, so they ended up sending the model back to me. Unfortunately it suffered damaged along the way and I had to repair it. The model is still in my possession as of right now, but I do plan on sending to Shaun again as soon as I can!

This is a brilliant documentary about probably my favourite TV show growing up. Loved TTTE (which, like many others, was the reason my parents bought the VHSs for me), but this was always so much better. It dealt with darker themes - in "Sunshine", the eponymous character attempts s**cide; in "Munitions", Ten Cents is prepared to fully sacrifice himself; "Ghosts" has terrified me since I first saw it, and that choral theme still makes me lose sleep if I get it stuck in my head at night; "Up River" puts the entire Bigg City at risk (as does "Munitions"). It didn't talk down to kids and it was prepared to face these things head on. The music was so much better than the TTTE music (which I also love), and the whole production value was so much higher. I really wish there had been more of them. This is a beautiful, insightful, enlightening, and emotional tribute to something that is dear to my heart that genuinely still is at risk of being forgotten. Loved the interviews, especially hearing from the actors. Fantastic stuff!

I haven’t got to watch the video last year because I was busy working on my video projects for KZfaq. But when I tapped on this video to watch it, this was the best documentary I’d ever watched. I love the history behind the show and all the detail about it. It made an impact for those who love Thomas like myself. Not to mention some of the crew members who were involved with TUGS were featured in this documentary, including the voice actors Sean Barrett or Shaun Prenderghast talking about the characters that they play in the show. Even Chris Tulloch, the voice of Zorran, is in this documentary. Great video! I personally would like to see Simon Nash and Shaun Prenderghast together in an interview, and maybe do their voices of Ten Cents and Sunshine to improvise a couple lines. What I personally love about TUGS is that the crew treat the show like a Steven Spielberg movie. They’d built some awesome models and sets. The effects and explosions were fantastic. And they’d done some breathtaking shots like the sunset or dawn shots in this show. The crew knows what they’re doing and David Mitton is a charismatic director who makes the show be like as a big Hollywood action movie. TUGS is not just a masterpiece in and of itself as a show, it’s a cinematic masterpiece. Happy 35th anniversary to the show itself.

An incredible feat indeed from all concerned. It's this level of dedication under which myself, single-handed, have been working through toil and apprehension to get to a stage where I am now working on finalising an extended pitch outlining a business proposal for 'Thomas & Friends'' future. Watching TUGS' legacy was a major influence in my ideas, and I am delighted that people from the original production remember it as well as when they did it. Regards, Samuel Farris.

Ringo Starr's Startling Studio, where the Tugs music by Mike O' Donnell and Junior Campbell was recorded, had previously been John Lennon's personal studio at his Tittenhurst Park home in Berkshire where he famously recorded his "Imagine" album. Ringo bought Tittenhurst Park from John in 1973, but sold it in 1988, therefore it is possible the Tugs music was amongst the last pieces recorded in that famous studio. It is interesting to note that Ringo Starr recorded "Goodnight Vienna" there in 1974 - what a coincidence?

Such spectacular work, as well as it would've been awesome if we also saw an interview of the voice of Ten Cents himself, Simon Nash (many years ago, he did act alongside with John Hasler, who would later be a future UK dub voice of Thomas for Thomas And Friends). Also in the final part regarding on whether there will be a possibility of a remake of this defunct series, hope they keep everything the same way as it did (character designs, storytelling, etc.), as well as who knows, even possibly adding in actual human characters like it was done in Thomas And Friends instead of just being loudhailers. May the great legacy of Robert Cardona and late David Mitton live on for many years to come.

This is fantastic, it was a great watch but also a bit saddening it made me think about what could've of been.

I really like the show i first saw it on youtube some 11 years ago and I really like the characters and episodes that made it interesting and a cool documentary I almost made a different tugs series that would have been like tugs but different i think Idk and I wish I got my chance to talk about tugs all well better luck next time so glad to see the shows legacy continue to this very day.

Great documentary very well done. Thanks so much for making it. Amazing how a show that only aired once and for one series over 30 years ago has such a following now. So glad most of the models survived. CGI is all well and good but they don't have the same magic as live action models. Enjoyed that. Thanks again.

I accidentally discovered Tugs while I was originally searching Theodore the tugboat because I remember watching it as a kid, lol.

4:16 Shame we never got to see some of the other cheater concepts brought to life. Same with the proposals for the second season too. Eitherway great documentary overall and best wishes from the midlands. 🙏 🚢
