This episode of History Adventures will be going to take a walk around the island of Tulagi and then walk out to Red Beach on Guadalcanal.
The Guadalcanal campaign started on August 7 1942 and the first beach landings were on the Florida Islands, Tulagi, Gavutu and Tanambogo. History Adventures will give you a little history of the area and then we will talk a walk around the islands to see the sites.
History Adventures - New videos are released every few days.

Great video coverage from the air of Red Beach. My father in law served on a 90 mm AA gun, and was with the Army troops that relieved the Marines in '43. He contracted malaria, and that dogged him for years after the war.

Many years ago I lived and worked in Honiara, I was able to visit many of the places that have featured in your videos. Back then there was far less development and still plenty of WW2 relics about. It was fairly common for live ordinance to be found during road works in Honiara. Your videos bring back plenty of memories.

My Dad served on Florida, Tulagi, Tanambogo , Gavutu and Guadalcanal. He landed on August 7 and was in the island chain until his departure for Guam which ended his combat engagements. He was wounded by mortar shrapnel in the first 18 hours and evacuated to a medical ship.

My neighbor and very good friend Ray Jenkins, was a Raider and landed the day before the Guadalcanal landings, on Tulagi. Yes, most of the Japanese were killed. He was an incredible Marine!

The threat of Guadalcanal was one of potential rather than specific Japanese intent, I think. In 1942 they were still thinking in terms of victory in a short war. The notion of cutting off Australia was not something that entered their thinking, which is evident in the casual and haphazard construction of the airstrip almost as an afterthought, without even the precaution of a defensive garrison. But the US was accurate about the threatening potential of a large airbase on that island, and their reaction was perfectly correct, as the idea would eventually have occurred to Japanese planners as well.

Next month the U.S. Coast Guard will commission a new cutter, honoring the heroic actions of a Coast Guard member who participated in the battle for Tulagi on Aug 7, 1942. He was awarded the Silver Star Medal for his heroic actions and went on the serve in four major battle campaigns during his nearly two years serving in the Pacific Theater. I left a message on your SFR Productions website with my contact info. I hope to hear from you. CAPT R. Grant
