I guess they weren't taught how to ventilate.............
@vinkelnisse
@vinkelnisse Ай бұрын
@@SG-hh9lu 506 / 5 000 American firefighters have a tendency for it to be ventilated regardless of the situation. You saw hole after hole instead of attacking a sometimes small fire which instead grows enormously. This causes the fire to gain more and more energy and in the end you cannot manage to put it out anyway. Then it doesn't help with a lot of holes in the ceiling. Pour water on immediately and put out the fire instead because then it will be easier to handle! Here, the fire brigade behaved in an exemplary manner, I think. Quick action!

Excellent Tulsa. I love the no-dicking-around at the door, just try, boot, and scoot in to attack the seat of the fire. And the E10 engineer is a boss, getting quick water, helping pull other lines, organizing equipment at the front of the house, very proactive. Very impressive. Rock on brothers.

It was a poor door entry. They didnt test there branch before they entered, then the guy kicks the door in and just charges in. That is how people get killed by a flashover or a backdraft. 1 person puts the door in while the other has the branch ready and aims a short pulse in to the compartment. By doing that you reduce the temperature of the flammable gases inside which reduces the chance of a backdraft, and it gives you an idea of the temperature inside. If the second guy going in has a thermal image camera you do a quick scan form the door way. If you do this before you enter, firstly you may find a casualty laying in that compartment who you can rescue quickly . Secondly you can see where the fire is and from the doorway spend a few seconds knocking it back so then you can move on quickly. By doing none of this you are just putting yourself in more danger than need be and you may well miss a casualty in your rush to get inside. Stay safe

Every fire is different. They're lucky it didn't flash. you never want to rush that's when people get hurt. Plus if flames are coming through the roof or windows the chance of a collapse goes up. That's why on big fires you see firefighters standing around or they need more help to fight it

I like the hustle, but not at the expense of missing key points. There was no 360 done, one firefighter just ran into the front door by himself before his team was ready, left the front door open to feed the fire, and completely missed the obvious fact that the fire originated in the garage (something they probably would have noticed had they done a size up). If the first line was going to the front door to fight extension to try and save the living space of the house, fine, that's a defendable tactic, but the second had to go to the garage (they were about to send a third through to door). Overall, The firefighters seemed to have a solid command of their skills and it looks like it was ultimately a successful operation, but I dunno, to me this is a very clear training video for the effects of tunnel vision.

I mean I hate to be that guy, but with all of that charged smoke, nobody went to the roof for vertical ventilation. Thoughts?
@evandavis7972
@evandavis7972 5 жыл бұрын
I think it started in the garage and entered the attic space. Notice where the smoke is coming out of? Before the the front door is opened, all the smoke is coming out of the eves and attic vents. Even when the front door is opened not too much product comes out relative to what is presenting from the rest of the structure. I'd love to see more video or info. If confined to the attic, attack the garage and upon entering the structure see where the seat of the fire is. It may just be in the attic where some guys could get on the roof, open it up and attack from up top with a hose line... Preventing a lot of the the belongings inside from more damage and destruction.

We had a structure fire 4 houses from the station. No way would we be ready to jump off upon arrival. So, you know what we did : we got ready, then the rig left the hall. Smarten up !! By the way, you had light colored smoke upon arrival. Then you lost it, BIG TIME !! P.S. Nice boot to the door though !!!! Second line should have went to the garage. Funny, this was EXACTLY like my last house fire ! And it started in the garage, but the 1st line went in the front door. Thanks for giving me the 2nd line Engine 1 driver, you are a generous man !! ;-)

I am not a fireman, but I would love to armchair this as I watch many videos. If fire fighters went all balls at the garage they would have pushed the fire into the living space, as smoke shows it was pushing to the attic. The way they hit it was perfect, glad to see all ff all masked up. Good job, a lot of higher ups should use this vid. For training.

Sqeeky Kleen But amazingly, once they knocked down the fire in the garage from a safe vantage point, the smoke conditions improved dramatically throughout the house. You don’t push fire with an 1 3/4 “ hose line. Watch some NIFTSA videos. Watch Governor’s Island research videos. Or at least sleep in a Holiday Inn Express.

Looks like the fire started in the garage and then extended into the attic space of the house. Couple of things I wonder about, but can't really say because of how the video was edited. Did the first in officer do a 360? Did they have 2 out before they went interior? Are they counting the engineer(s) as part of their two out, even though they are not in PPE?
@skymedic48
@skymedic48 5 жыл бұрын
I can at least answer part of this. Per NFPA, to meet 2 in 2 out, you need 2 firefighters fully bunkered out in gear, ready to go. The drivers do not count. However, if a rescue scenario, such as a window open and the crew sees someone inside, 2 in 2 out, doesn't apply. It appears tulsa operates like most departments, including mine, the first due engine goes in and goes to work, understanding 2nd due is hot on their heels. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't know any departments that truly follow 2 im/2 out to the letter. Research says the trend is changing, but change is usually slow.

This reminds me of our last structure fire, almost to the tee ! We were 2nd engine on scene. Heavy smoke and fair size flame coming from attached garage mostly. Lucky for us, the 1st engine crew went in the front door. Found heavy smoke, no fire. My partner and I grabbed 2nd line off of 1st arriving engine and approached the attached garage. I was on the nozzle. While waiting for my partner, I began to hit the eaves troughs around the corner and back of house. As well, at the top of the closed garage door. My partner tapped me on the shoulder to proceed. I opened the entry door, and backdraft tossed my partner and I back. We recovered, and entered garage. Clearly this is where the fire started. Owner was stripping antiques with a torch, and forgot to turn it off when she left. Fire inside the beer fridge even !!!! 1st engine crew opens secondary door from inside house, doesn't see us or recalls hearing us gain entry, and opens their line on us. We radio to stop them, that we're inside !!! They stop, and I continue to ventilate thru window, hydraulic. A good fire.

Well, at least the home owner knows he got a good deal on the windows ;-) And the 3rd guy in, assuming he was the Captain, should have stayed at the doorway, or a few feet in. Too many in one confined space. Talk about that btw, we had a structure fire the other week, and it was in a 3' crawl space. My partner and I went in, and there was barely room, then 2 more ff's came down, we had to beg them to leave, like a 3' room on fire isn't fuckd up enuff ;-)

Question for everyone : the other day, I was walking down the street in the downtown core, and an Engine and Ladder truck responded to the commercial building I was near. An alarm showing fire on the 2nd floor, nothing showing. We are required to wear seatbelts on the rigs now, ever since we had a rollover of an Engine that paralyzed a ff from the neck down, almost caused another ff to lose his arm, and obvious PTSD for all involved. So, when the Captain got off the Engine today upon arrival, he wasn't ready to go, and jokingly I said "not ready to go Capt. So-N-So, what's up"...to which he replied with "hey, gotta wear those seatbelts, so no room for a SCBA over it". To be fair, the station is 1.5 blocks from the alarm. I agree, and half the time, the Captain notifies dispatch we are all belted because it's the way we have to be now, even though we aren't. Do you wear seatbelts ? How do you get it over everything ? I know we should, but it's so slow to get it all on, and oh fawk if it gets tangled up ! One shift, I was working with the proverbial "cowboy" ff, you know him, the gung-ho, know-it-all. We were 2nd alarm Engine. About a 5-7 minute ride. Smoke visible from our station, 1st station calling it in, asking for the 2nd alarm, huge barn fire fully involved.. We have 3 seats in the back of the rig, all facing forward, tanks in back of seats, the norm. I was beside HIM. He was fumbling around, hissing and puffing about his straps on his SCBA being tangled. So, I just waited, watched the smoke, and enjoyed myself. The Captain says to me, "Are you going to get dressed Aaron ?" To which I replied,"Yup, as soon as Frank is done fumbling around with himself". Nope, he didn't like that comment, especially when he was on the verge of promotion to Captain, and I a probie with 3 months on the job (with that dept, I spent 3 yrs with Detroit Fire). Finally, he was done, and I took my time, as to not get paired up with him. I was ready upon arrival, and paired up with my driver, a laid-back let's get drunk and fuk chics sort of guy. Except the guy passes out at the sight of blood, so guess who drives every medical and MVA ? Yup, him. We walk up the driveway to a huge garage, fully involved. Cowboy has a 2.5" line in hand, going nuts ! The place was charred, nothing left. Then, like he's doing me the biggest favour of my life, gives me the nozzle, and says "your turn". LMAO I swore he was riding me, ya know, like a red-ass gets. But nope, he genuinely meant it. Aww, I said," thanks so much ! Which charred piece of wood shall I aim this at ?" Not a second after, I open up the nozzle, on....did I say purpose ? Nah, I didn't, ;-) Bam, tons of PSI bounced off his chest ! Oops, sorry, this red-ass begged for mercy...but got respect, from the entire station !! Moral of the story : don't be a dick, cowboy !! P.S. The cause of that fire ? The kid and friend smoking pot in the garage when dad walks in, they toss the joint, one problem though, Dad just cut the grass with the riding lawn mower, the type that gets a hot engine when ran long. Hahaha if we knew, we would have inhaled !!
@Cthippo1
@Cthippo1 5 жыл бұрын
Absolutely we wear seatbelts. Sit down, stick your arms through the SCBA straps, then put on your seatbelt. My engine doesn't move until I know everyone has them on. It can be a pain to put on hoods and button up coats with a seatbelt on, but it can be done.

Then they say “you’re not a fireman so shut up” but I know that you need to put water on ASAP.. assess flow paths for potential victims as you’re getting ready!

Looks to me like a lot of the people criticizing the Tulsa FD in this video are "text book" firefighters as opposed to experienced, "street-smart" firefighters. The text book firefighters either work in small suburban fire departments that see, maybe, 10 working fires a year and are primarily an emergency medical service. And some probably aren't even firefighters at all. Street-smart firefighters in larger cities like Tulsa see dozens of fires every year. And yes, the majority of their calls are medically related; but they fight a lot of fire too. Both text book and street-smart firefighters operate under very similar SOP's. However; the street-smart firefighters recognize that SOP's are guidelines, not commandments etched into a stone tablet. By the time he/she gets to be a company officer in the Tulsa, the street-smart firefighter has hundreds of room and contents fires in small residences from which to draw experience and make decisions on how (and when) to apply department SOP's. I am not knocking the text book firefighter, they too are simply a product of their environment. They simply do not have the opportunity to gain the experience and, therefore, have to rely more heavily on the SOP's as dictates rather than guidelines. Also, don't underestimate the amount of institutional knowledge that gets passed on to the Tulsa Fire Department from it's proximity to Oklahoma State University and it Fire Protection Engineering programs. Bottom Line to all - these videos don't show all sides and all angles of what is happening on the fire ground. Judge what you are watching by the results that are achieved by the people actually on the scene, putting the wet stuff on the red stuff and making it go away, rather than nitpicking every action from the limited perspective of a single camera and your own limited experience.

Wow! No organized vent and enter. Just front door approach. Was there any 360 size up at all? maybe a little to quick on the entrée? And one person going in on the line?

Good first arriving crew there. Don't like them going in there like that without any venting being done first unless it's for rescue. I'm glad it didn't flashover on them. Good job though.

Nice hustle. Why's everyone talking shit on the nozzleman going in "alone"? I think it would be safe to assume he thought his backup man was coming in right behind him. Not his fault that he didn't right away...

Can someone explain to me without being a jerk why they went straight into the house when the fire was clearly in the garage?
@evandavis7972
@evandavis7972 5 жыл бұрын
Tunnel vision? Maybe they thought they would push fire? Maybe they thought a chance for victims may have been greater in the house and not the garage. They could have talked it up before and delegated assignments as well, who knows though. They were quick, fire went out and no one got hurt.

A calm, methodical 360 should have revealed the garage was the source of the fire. Command is more than operations. Dangerous to enter a Vent limited structure with high heat, charged smoke and give the decaying fire new life. The door open draws fresh air and can give life to cause the fire to flash or backdraft. Smoke tells the story.
