Yeah, saw that too. The backlight really amplifies how much smoke a welder is exposed to. I use a portable fan to either blow the smoke away or, draw away pending on the position.

Good tips. There are a couple of adjustments on my everlast mig welder that I should play with a bit to see if I can get the beads even better.

You dont need to change the tip if wire is feeding fine. When the wire starts sticking and pulsing out the tip. Or burns back onto tip.

your "end product" with your "dialed in settings" was after you got some heat in that workpiece from your other side pass. you mentioned it might need more heat, but i can guarantee you need more heat on a workpiece at ambient temperature. im not saying its going to fail or anything, but a root pass is standard IMHO (especially for anything that must hold pressure). not that im teaching you how to do your thing or whatever, but novice welders watching this might not understand.

If the wire is feeding through okay, how do I know when to change the tip?

what technique did you use? - pushing or pulling, did you do the back and forth technique/pausing, making little "u", or just straight?

On my machine(100 amp Century) I am still getting build-up on the bead. Looks consistant, just looks like I need more heat to flatten out the bead.
