Tuning the Carburetors On The Supercharged Tide Car

In this video, I tune the carburetors on the weiand supercharger, or attempt to, anyway.
The carburetor I had on the engine before the blower, I have come to find out, is a 500 CFM carb. That wouldn't do with the 650 on the front. So I bought another AVS2 for the rear of the roots blower.
Both carbs come stock with:
6" Hg step up springs (orange)
0.101 primary jets
0.098 secondary jets
and 0.070 x 0.037 metering rods
I had a really tough time tuning out the lean condition just off idle and cruise. I went with the heaviest step-up spring I could, which was 8" I kind of wish they had 10" springs. That was the biggest positive change in the car was swapping those springs.
I also put 0.101 jets in the secondaries which brought the AFR down to about 12/1 at wide open throttle. I'm seriously considering putting 0.073 x 0.037 metering rods with 0.104 jets in the primary. I will probably try that after I drive the car around a bit more and see how it does.
The floats were about 10-20% off from the factory, which is within reason. It's pretty difficult to get them perfect. I can't imagine being the guy who just sets floats all day at the Edelbrock factory!
All in all, I had fun tuning the carbs. Still have a lot to learn.
Thank you so much for watching!

definitely use of a vac gauge would aid a bunch in tuneing

I'd step up one jet size and go with one spring lighter than the heavyest might clear up part throttle opp

You need to put a vacuum gauge next to your A/F gauge. That way you can see the exact correlation of A/F changes and 'load' at the base of the carbs And you'll be able to see exactly when the metering events take place.

Would be good info to have. I do know that both carbs are at 20" at idle 😆😆

I missed the fun run registration before it sold out, but I did enter the burnout competition so I can at least have my car in the pits like last year. I have to be approved for that though, so I may or may not be there with the car.

Alright, I'm no fan of NASCAR, but this is kinda cool. Properly, seriously cool. If I was asked to do a project like this, I'd do it on a Lumina NASCAR with a paintjob that wasn't as recognizable (Or preferebly, just plain jane white). Then I'd drop a 366 cubic inch V8 in there and repaint it to resemble the "Rainbow Warrior" Jeff Gordon (Along with a printed image of Jessica Rabbit and one of those JBL Speakers, so I can show up playing White Zombie or some thing to that effect).

I got the linkage kit from Summit. Was like $14. The pedal is a lever design. It came with the car. It attaches via bent aluminum brake line and assorted fittings to the linkage.

a roots blower will have a stronger vacuum signal than a NA engine.
@RightTurnRandy

So many people say that, but I haven't noticed the difference. I don't see, in terms of physics, how it would be any different, under the carbs, that a larger displacement engine.

@@RightTurnRandy It is different in effecting power valve/vacuum metering rods, The blower pulls air harder than pistons do, even at idle.

Randy, what ratio are you running on the blower? Top Pulley teeth = ? Bottom pulley teeth = ?. I just picked up my blower and I want to get some feedback on amount over\under drive on your small block.

It has a 38 up top and I believe a 34 on the crank. Works out to something like 15% under drive. Or maybe 12%, can't remember.

@RightTurnRandy

@@the350v8 Carter style carbs don't need that. The lean spot is a combination of the secondary air valves not opening at the right time and the step up springs being too soft. I could tune it out, but it's gonna be a lot of work for that little hiccup. I probably will eventually.

There are no power valves on these carburetors. And with this setup, you don't have to have a boost reference for anything.

Wait wait wait. You are using an AVS2 carburetor with a supercharger? I just want a clear answer before I memorize this video. I was told you had to get a blow through carburetor for a supercharger.
@RightTurnRandy
@RightTurnRandy Жыл бұрын
For a turbo, you would need a blow through carburetor since it pressurizes the entire airstream. All a supercharger does is draw more air than the engine would normally. The only issue I've had so far is the normal step up springs aren't quite strong enough to quickly lift the needles upon off idle acceleration. Yes, they are AVS2 carburetors and they work great. If I got the right step up springs and tuned the air valves properly they would be perfect.

@@vitorcruz9586 Thank you so much. I can't adjust the amount of vacuum the springs see without modifying the Carburetor body. I'm not confident enough to engineer something like that. What you are suggesting is a very good idea. To reduce overall vacuum for just the springs would be an excellent solution. I don't believe it can be done easily. Your English is quite good.

@@RightTurnRandy I have a plan to change This vaccum signal, a carb spacer with holes and a hose conecting in the intake, that way you don t need to change anything in the carburetor, Just isolating the vaccum signal between carburetor and blower!! But supercharging an v8 in Brazil is not easy and accessible like in USA.... Unfortunetly

It's a Weiand 6-71. There's a video of the whole install. Everything done to this car is on the channel. It's not super noisy. Some guys have timing gear sets that are gear driven, super noisy. You can hear the supercharger, but it's not grating and certainly not louder than the exhaust. I personally love how it sounds.
