I have been running a 1406 on a torker manifold on an AMC 360 for over 20 years, never had an issue, runs great and has no issues with acceleration or torque. I also run a 1406 on a 352 FE Ford motor. Also run one on a 302 small block Ford. And another one on a 360 Mopar. All applications have worked well for me. Never an issue with any of them.

@@joejanicek766 and literally Edelbrock doesn’t recommend the 1406 on the torker manifold because it’s calibrated as an economy carb. The boosters are completely different. We’ve shown those differences. But if you’ve learned to accept it, then enjoy it.

Just installed one of these on a stock 86 f150 with a factory 4bbl 351w. Fuel regulated at 5.5 psi, new distributor, timing set with light, idle mixture screws set with vac gauge. Cranks good, idles good, runs down the road good. Great acceleration. The problem I’m having and cannot figure out is after cruising down the road once the engine is good and hot, let off the the gas to turn or come to a stop and the engine will die. Put it to the floor and it cranks back up. I’ve learned so much from your videos, thank you. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you again.

Narrow the supply tube slightly, improve the airflow entry into the venturi of the booster! Very interesting, are the 500's like that with the boosters as well? (The 1403 vs. 1404) I used to have a 1405 that I put electric choke on, worked very well, I sold it, should have kept it.

I’m still looking for some verification on the booster part numbers. I’ve had a few come through here but keep forgetting to check the numbers to see if they’re different. I can’t assume so as there are sizes that have the same booster part numbers from more factory manual or electric choke carbs. But we know WHY the 1406 is considered an economy carburetor. Does an awesome job of it too! Thanks for stopping by!

@MuscleCarSolutions
@MuscleCarSolutions 10 ай бұрын
Glad you enjoy the content! As far as the 500 goes, I think you’re asking if the manual choke carburetor is a better choice than the electric choke version because of the boosters? The answer to that would be no. The 1406 was really designed as that application that fits a LOT of stock type applications and economy was their primary focus. The 500s weren’t designed that way. If you look at the tuning chart, the 1406 was isolated from the 1405 for the reasons we covered in the video. The 500s are calibrated identically, which tells you the only difference in those is the choke mechanism. That’s the best way to confirm that statement. You can also look at the 1411. Same thing. It was made as a stock replacement carb so it has a different booster (reference the booster ID on my website and the carb manual) than the 1407. Smart way of addressing that really big customer base looking for a cheap, easy stock replacement 600 or 750 carb. How’s that for a lot of details? 😆 Cheers!

Thanks for that info. You kept mentioning using the 1405\1406 on those specific intakes. Why those in particular? I'm now thinking of swapping my 1406 to an AVS or 1405 on my stock 1972 Buick 350, but it's adapted to the original spread bore (Qjet) intake. A new aluminum dual-plane square bore intake for the Buick 350 is $500!! I don't care about fuel economy. Is it worth my while to swap to the 1405\AVS, or should I sell my first born for that $500 aluminum dual-plane intake first? Or move up to a 650cfm carb instead?
@MuscleCarSolutions
@MuscleCarSolutions 11 ай бұрын
Those intakes aren’t in the performer series. All intake that are rated at 1500+ rpm and higher. Didn’t have time to mention all the others it won’t work on either! Your situation I guess depends on what you’re after. The ole Buick would do well with a performer intake. Enhances that low end torque. The AVS2 would be my choice if you go that route. If the engine is still stock though, those upgrades really won’t equate to much. Cam swap and a look at the CR would make a carb/intake change worth while.

I’m glad you found the videos useful. I did a video on why the 1406 isn’t a performance carburetor. It’s calibrated more for economy, and not with simple rod and jet changes. The boosters are different. Now to your 1405, the boosters are designed for more performance. It doesn’t mean you can’t get more economy from it. A well tuned carburetor will give you a little bit of that. But sadly, if you’re looking for big jumps in fuel economy, your answer is in the transmission. I did a video on that too! How to get good fuel economy in a muscle car I think is the name of it. Get a calibration kit, add some more timing, and start seeing where you can lean it out. The engine will tell you when it’s not happy.

The performer intake is a perfect fit for the 1406. Off idle to 5500 is the power band and works well together with a mild duration cam. I have 3 edelbrock carbs now. I have the 1407 & the 1411 & i thought the same thing. They were the same? I learned they are not & i bought a calibration kit for the 1411. When i ran the 1407 it was always very rich. I switched to the 1411 & expected it to be rich so i immediately leaned it out & found it to be very lean. So i richened it back up & found it almost went back to stock. My engine liked it with the stock sized jets but with a slight rod change. But i have it on a ford 390 in a pickup & the 1411 works very well on it. I recently got a 1405 but it seemed like it didnt want to idle nomatter what i did so im guna put a rebuild kit in the 1405 & buy a calibration kit for it & try it again. I know my 390 likes the 1411 but alot of people say thats to big. Idk? It sure runs good with it! But ill try the 1405 & see? Maybey it will like the 600 better? Id bet my 390 is about 350hp engine if i had to guess. So a 600cfm carb should be able to support that fine? But time will tell? I know the 1407 was very rich! 1411 was good.

Yes. The 1407 and 1411 are the same situation as the 1405 and 1406. The electric choke carburetors are calibrated for economy. Even says so right in the Edelbrock catalog! CFM size will depend on a number of factors. The simple way of looking at it is max engine rpm x CI /3456. That will get you in the ballpark and how you plan on driving it and want other components you have (even if they are poorly matched to the engine) will let you know what direction to go when deciding the CFM to use. Everything else is about tuning once you have the right CFM.

@MuscleCarSolutions My engine is a .060 over 390 so 401ci. I somtimes inbetween 2nd to 3rd shift will rev it out to 5500. So that's pretty much max rpm. With the cam & heads I have no reason to push beyond that. With that being said when I punched the numbers it worked out to need 638 cfm. So a 650cfm carb would probably be about right for it. As far as driving style,......I'll just say I was brought up watching Dukes of Hazard & I took it literally! But until I can acquire a 650 or maybey a 670 QF, I'll have to tune either this 750 or the 600 to the best they can be. So far it runs really well with that 1411. It might not sound good but for what it is & how I drive, I've gotton 10mpg. It's a 71 f100 4x4 shortbox with a FE & a np 435 4spd & 4.11 gears with aggressive tread stock size tires. (So 28" tall) at 60 mph its turning at about 3000 rpm. It's dun the 1/4 in 15.3 sec at 95 mph. 0 - 60 was 7.6 sec. So if that tells u anything it's obviously hard to launch out of the hole but it gains speed rapidly. It's 4700 lbs.

@@jesse.jsmall0652 that’s a good place to start with the timing. But you’ve done no tuning to the carburetor. So your challenge is to determine if it’s not getting enough fuel or if it’s getting too much. First step the step up springs. Then start working though the tuning chart. All that matter little unless the fuel system is set up correctly so make sure you’ve got the right filters in the system and set your pressure regulator to 6psi and you can adjust down from there as needed.

@@jesse.jsmall0652 understood, but you’re but addressing the issue. The carburetor must be adjusted to what the engine wants. Buy a calibration kit as it will have the pieces you need to start tuning. But before you do that, how do you know that’s not the wrong size carburetor for your application? Let’s figure that out first before you start chasing down something you won’t be able to adjust correctly.

Doubtful you’re going to feel much difference until you spend some time tuning for best HP numbers. But there are differences and there’s a reason why Edelbrock says the 1406 is geared more towards to economy focused customer/engine.

I’m running more like attempting to run a 1406 lol on my 1969 351w. My carb seems to clog up some how and blocks off any fuel, as a result the car dies. I’m only saying this, bc I’ve replaced (fuel pumps mechanical.. and switched to electrical, checked uplifter sock in the tank, all lines have been cleaned out.) I threw on a pressure gauge and a pressure regulator. To remedy the situation, I would disconnect the fuel line from the carb, let out all the fuel, run the electrical pump and have it spill out i to a bottle, then reconnect the fuel line to the carb, and it runs again until it doesn’t. I’ve noticed this happens after ten minutes of running the engine. This never happened with the two barrel I had on it before the 1406. Hopefully someone will bring insight to this problem, I don’t want to go back to the two barrel lol Edit: Fuel pressure at start up was 8psi with mechanical and 6 with electrical pump. After 5 min of running it dips down to 4 psi then 3 psi. Then eventually the car will bog out or it will shut off with 0psi.
@MuscleCarSolutions
@MuscleCarSolutions 11 ай бұрын
Sounds like a fuel system issue. If you’re starting at 8psi, that’s not good. If you’re losing that much pressure on the electric pump, time to determine you’re getting the correct amount of voltage to the pump. Is it a frame mounted pump? Reset the ground. Add a ground strap near by from the frame to body. That’s where I’d start.
@beckera.4678
@beckera.4678 11 ай бұрын
@@MuscleCarSolutions thank you for ur input. The pressure loss is exactly the same as when I ran the mechanical fuel pump, I changed out the mechanical pump twice before getting an electrical pump. As for the electrical pump itself, yes it has a solid ground about 4 inches away from the pump itself, I tested its voltage and it’s pressure separately and it builds pressure without any issues. These symptoms didn’t start until I put the four barrel on the engine.

I run a 1405 and I noticed the subtle metering changes in the documentation between the 1405 & 1406 but I didn't realize the boosters were any different, that's interesting. It looked to me like they had a different "philosophy" in mind between the two and your investigation kinda backs that up. As far as the Chinese version goes, you could probably order a pallet of them and all the boosters would measure differently from one another, with no consistency at all. I didn't even know there was a Chinese knock-off but I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I know they make copies of motorcycle carbs and even Weber DCOEs... In fact I just saw a Facebook post about a guy trying to get his car idling on "brand new" DCOEs and he's having trouble. Then he says they are Chinese. What kind of quality control do you expect to get with a Chinese copy of a Weber DCOE or an AFB clone? The answer is 'a lot less QC than is required'.
@MuscleCarSolutions
@MuscleCarSolutions 11 ай бұрын
I can’t say for sure, but I’m guessing Edelbrock made that decision to address that crowd that shops at the local auto parts stores. They don’t need a performance carb. They need on that will work on as many stock applications as they can. Just my guess, but it seems to work very well as every major store in the US probably has a 1406 on the shelf along with the manifold adapter. The Chinese stuff is completely frustrating. It’s worse for the Edelbrock folks. Those consumers will call Edelbrock for tech support and then tell them in a knock off of their carb. You’re not going to get the same level of responsiveness from that carburetor. You’ll learn to put up with how it runs, not make it the best for the application. Junk!

You’re incorrect on the new 4150. Go watch my video on it. There’s no carburetor in the holley line up that even comes close to the features that one has.
