Hands down the ONE song that can guarantee that I’ll tear up like a baby. Boy’s especially have a very unique connection and appreciation for their mothers and this song hits exactly on those key emotions. Powerful stuff. His ability in one line to connect everyone of us to a visual of our mothers cooking us a meal is emotionally gripping.

I grew up with an abusive dad, who was out of the picture by the time I was ten. My mother fell into the trap of drug abuse to numb her trauma, and raised four kids alone. When my father died, I felt numb. Confused, bc I never had a dad, and angry bc of all the baggage his existence created. I started selling drugs as a teen, bc I needed to eat. Moved out at 17, but my brother and I were absolute terrors within the community. We blamed our mother for all the bad shit that happened. It wasn’t until I matured, that I was able to appreciate this song, for what it was. As kids, our parents are the arbiters of all that is good and strong, but until we become adults, we don’t understand that they’re just people. As flawed and clueless about this life as anyone else. After she got clean, I sent this song to her. She thanked me, and told me she loved me. I’m in my 30’s, and we’ve said that phrase to each other maybe 10 times. I can tell that knowing I could finally see her story through eyes that walked many of the same roads, brought her great peace. Music is one of the most powerful things humans have ever created. It’s capacity to heal is something I’ll never lose appreciation for.

As beautiful as this song is, the story of him writing it is amazing. Suppposedly he had to go to the bathroom, and took a pen and pad. He came out with this song, called his mom, read it to her, and she cried. The rest as they say, is history. I don't doubt that he wrote it that quickly, because the body of work that he left is a testament to how quick and prolific he was.
