In todays video I take my 1988 Toyota pickup do some final upgrades and take it to my local shop to put it on the dyno! Huge shoutout to the guys at ‪@dynoedge‬ in Albuquerque!
Come along to see how much power this tired ol 300,000 mile tacoma engine can put to the wheels through its factory A43D automatic transmission. This is a stock 2RZ Toyota 2.4L engine and stock transmission, it has "pink top" injectors and a fuel pressure regulator. The turbo is a cheap eBay special, and the manifold, 2.5" intake charge and 2.5" exhaust is all custom fabricated by me on this channel.
How much power does a turbo 2rz or turbo 3rz actually make?

toss the automatic in the trash and put in a manual. there is very little support for the automatic and you would likely end up sinking lots of money into it, just for it to blow up again. If you get your hands on a 2tr bellhousing you can run a R series transmission that should have no problem handling turbo power.

I’ve actually been on the lookout for a reasonably priced r series, they are not easy to find for cheap! I unfortunately think I’m going to end up manual swapping the automatic swap, but have a good auto to go in I might just throw in just to get it back on the road!

I know a manual is more common for the turbo 2RZ/3RZ platform. But I’ve seen plenty of people have success with upgrading the pressure solenoid and adding a trans cooler. I’ve been researching for quite some time and that’s likely the route I’m going. You can brake boost and the auto keeps the turbo spooled between shifts too.

I think my Tacoma has a w59 behind it. The clutch slips at 50 mph with 16 psi boost. 5 speed holds up though

I like the idea of a healthy automatic trans...... but I vote for a manual swap.

I also enjoy the idea of a nice auto street truck, but I feel that it’s going to be hard to find one to hold any power.

R155 trans will bolt up, run a 3rz clutch since its a larger diameter disc and flywheel. R155 is the strongest 5 speed toyota has made yet. 2005-2015 tacomas. Its what i run.

I’ve been looking for one local or at a junk yard wiring a reasonable drive and they seem to be hard to find, I would definitely like to run an R series transmission.

Definitely a r150, cool truck. I’ve got a gen 5 pickup hoping to swap a 2jz in but 2rz would be a cool cheaper alternative.

Look in the Phoenix,Az market as well I drove down to Albuquerque to visit family so I can bring it down to you. It should fit in the back seat of a 2002 Buick Lesabre.

it really depends on what you're doing with the truck. an automatic would better for long term drivability but a manual would give you more range and torque control especially if your doing a slow crawl and pulling stuff. but a good automatic can also do that if it can handle the power, ya could use a adapter plate and get a automatic that's somewhat compatible there has to be something that's compatible with the 1999 toyota tacoma drive line, i find it hard to believe that there isn't something that will fit. ya just got to look even if its from a different automaker. i feel like the 2RZ has more then one style of automatic.
@redlineranch.
@redlineranch. 3 ай бұрын
There are multiple styles most of which are better than what I have, but the auto that's in the truck now has no electronics, and no torque converter lockup. All the other automatics that mate up and hold power better require a TCM or standalone transmission controller, which ends up making it a manual shifted automatic, or requires an entire wiring harness swap again, which doesn't make sense to me right now. And I feel that takes away from the idea of a simple street truck. I'm probably going to manual swap it and also move the engine back because I moved it pretty far forward when I initially did the swap, because of the automatic transmission and not wanting to make a new crossmember, but a manual will allow the proper placement of the engine, and allow more power to the wheels.

I've got a 1989 with a 22re 5spd, I have future plans to put at turbo on the 22re. How hard was it to fit one onto your 2rz? also did you have to do any tuning to the computer to make that change or did you just run the piping and oil fittings and send it?
@redlineranch.
@redlineranch. 6 ай бұрын
I just put the turbo on and a fuel pressure regulator, so I can turn the fuel up just a little, but still the stock ECU. Full send on this one, still an unopened engine with 300k miles. I’ve built 22re turbos before and from my experience I would hold out till you can get a 2/3rz swap, it’s similar or more power than a turbo 22re without a turbo and they respond quite nice to boost. Just a lot more tech in the RZ engines vs the RE engines.
@kernal9093
@kernal9093 6 ай бұрын
It's a brand new 22re Reman with less than 4k miles on it. I wish I had the income to toss it and do another swap but I'm stuck with the 22re for the next 200k miles as is lol. If you've got any history on a 22re turbo job what size turbo would you recommend? @@redlineranch.
@redlineranch.
@redlineranch. 6 ай бұрын
@@kernal9093 something pretty small, want to be in the boost pretty early for good drivability, the setup I worked on had the LCE kit with the Garrett turbo. Just make sure you have good fuel supply and proper air fuel ratios, that’s one of the biggest thing with adding boost, need to match fuel.
