Good news the upcoming motor heads have channels like yours to mentor from , the only thing I would be concerned with is they don’t mis interpret car for something that sounds like kaur.... ? Lol couldn’t resist hope you have a sense of humor, out here in the NW we don’t think we have accents but I’m sure others would say otherwise.. I’m just guessing but my friend from the nor east are not shy to say what’s on there mind or getting the point across straight up with colorful linguistics. @@mountainsgarage ive got a couple questions for you bud. 1. Before installing the pump I gave the output shaft a spin, it moves but it definitely isnt silky smooth. It takes sone umph to get it all moving. Should it be slick like spining a crank in bearings in a block? 2. I dont plan to use the Speedo cable, I saw the core plug for that. I also dont plan to run a kick down and just manually shift it, I can just remove the solinoid and the connector plug right? Or is anything else needed? Lastly is there anything I need to check with the pump out and the new ptc convertor? Or just lube up, install and check that the pump gears engage the comverter and turn the pump? Im getting the new guy jitters but so far everything went together decent, all the drum seals suck for a newbie and not cutting them.
@mountainsgarage3 жыл бұрын
@@shocker998md3 The tailshaft might turn easier one way than the other. If you got the center support bolt in and the snap ring and it still turns, it’s probably fine. I usually try the hub of the converter through the pump bushing if it’s apart but it’s never a fitment issue, just lube it up and put it in. No need to be nervous, you know how to fix it!
@mountainsgarage3 жыл бұрын
And yes core plugs are fine. I would leave the kick down solenoid bolted on to prevent leaks if it’s a stock VB.

@MountainGarage Just subscribed thank you for sharing this information. I finished a th400 build for my Cadillac engine. It was the first time I ever done one. Is their a fix for the front pump 6Oclock bolt hole? I think I stripped it. Anyway, my torque wrench never clicked and the bolt won't tighten. It leaks. After I installed a Hughes stall it leaks a lot more. I do have a spare but its a 72 case from a Pontiac Wagon. I just don't want rebuild it again. But my gut tells me I will.
@mrblanche Жыл бұрын
The metric thing is easy to explain. In the late 70's, GM announced that they were shifting to metric fasteners...sort of. Their wording was that "only new machining will be switched to metric. So, if you were a mechanic working on GM cars, you needed both SAE and metric tools, because when you started working on, oh, say, a front end, you never knew if the part was new or old machining. It was a real pain for at least 5 years, until every part on a new car was new machining and thus metric.

Years ago, I busted a tail housing. I crawled under some old turd at the junk yard and removed the tail housing on some older car (probably a 70s model something or another). It didn't have a driveshaft in it, so that made it a little easier. I didn't know it when removing it, but it wasn't for a normal th400 size yoke. It was a short shaft tail housing, but it was in-between a th400 & th350 size yoke. 400 yoke wouldn't slide in it at all and a 350 was loose. It's the only one I've ever seen like that. I have never found any information about it.

@mountainsgarage2 жыл бұрын
You are on the right track. I would start by going to the TH400 section of the Crankshaft Coalition website and perform the auto shift valve body mods first. A adjustable red stripe modulator turned in a few turns helps as well. Governor springs can adjust WOT shifts.

If so how would I I.D. such a case in a search for one? what is your thoughts on using case adapters? Also what type of clutches would you rec. in my build Thank you for your time~

Thanks for the nice words! Look in my playlist I have a few videos stripping HD Pontiac cases in search of the right one for my personal transmission. I also have videos of removing the bellhousing and installing an SFI housing, some with both bolt patterns. Any brand name clutch, Borg Warner, Raybestos, Alto, etc. will work fine. Smooth or waffle is another choice but either will live a long life with good clearance and pressure.

I just finished rebuilding my th350 and have it in my 61 Chevy C10 pickup. I have an issue with tranny fluid pushing out the tranny dip stick. After diagnosing the problem I blew air into the dip stick to check the that the breather vent isn't blocked in any way. I removed the vent tube and found that the passage way to the breather vent cap doesn't vent. So the tranny is building up pressure and blowing out the fluid through the dip stick tube. I followed all steps when rebuilding and can't figure out what the blocked is caused from. Anyone have any ideas before I pull the tranny from the car and take it apart again. Thanks

If I want to run a slip yoke on a TH400 that was originally in a truck with a bolt-type yoke, do I NEED to find a yoke with the counterbored recess to make sure the yoke has proper engagement? Based on 17:48 , it seems like the regular yoke without the recess is bottoming out against the o-ring ridge on the shaft. I'm wondering how long that yoke would stick out past the tailhousing
@mountainsgarage2 жыл бұрын
The easiest way is to machine/grind off the o ring groove and run any yoke. Second choice is running the counter bored yoke and not machine the shaft. I machine every one. I cover it better in other videos. Thanks for watching!

Can you take the truck yoke off and use it like that in a 2 wheel drive car or do you have to replace tail shaft and housing?
@mountainsgarage3 жыл бұрын
No need to buy anything, just unbolt the yoke and remove the O ring on the output shaft. I cut the O ring groove off in the lathe so a standard yoke has full travel. You can also buy a recessed spline yoke that will go over the O ring groove also so no machine work is required.

Approx. how many miles can you get out of a TH400 from factory in a daily driver before rebuild needed?
@mountainsgarage Жыл бұрын
Hundreds of thousands of miles. It will probably start leaking first.
@robrobster9148 Жыл бұрын
@@mountainsgarage thanks. You mean like 200K miles or more?
@mountainsgarage Жыл бұрын
@@robrobster9148 Yes!
@robrobster9148 Жыл бұрын
@@mountainsgarage okay, so 300K is also a possibility? When driven daily and serviced well over time.

Do you offer built transmissions? I’m looking for a built 400 with a brake.
@mountainsgarage Жыл бұрын
Are you local to Maine?
@daviddenman7479 Жыл бұрын
@@mountainsgarage no unfortunately. I’m located in Wisconsin. I do have a guy that can build me a 400 but ‘he don’t do heavily built 400’s often’…… and I don’t really want to pay some of these prices as some shops want. I just want a built 400 that won’t break the bank….I’m not afraid of spending money but I just don’t get a good feeling from a couple places around me. I’ve watched a bunch of your videos and you obviously know your stuff. I did join that DIY th400 page on Facebook today. I’m building a Chevy colorado with a turbo 6.0 in it. I’m expecting 900 or better with the turbo I have. I know nothing about rebuilding transmissions and I have no interest in experimenting either. Just need to find a honest builder or something. Or just a parts list and I’ll just get it done by me. I appreciate any help. I’m just afraid I’ll be taken for a ride at my local shop….. kinda sad isn’t it? Of course I want a trans brake. ATD I think I was set on.

@@daviddenman7479 Well ATD is also in Wisconsin and they build fine transmissions. In my playlist I have a recipe for that power range so you will have an idea what you need.

@@mountainsgarage I live like 45 minutes from them. I looked them up and they seem to offer some great choices. Thanks for the info!
