I’ve seen a lot of 6 volt to 12 volt conversion videos on KZfaq, but none of them explained very well what they were doing for someone that doesn’t know a lot of electrical wiring. This is a step by step video providing all the details to make your Power Wheels faster. Remember, the most important part of the conversion is adding the inline fuse!
Safety first, if you are unsure about the process, get additional advice. Kids should also wear a helmet when riding!

Great video, you've covered a number of details other videos omitted. The existing wiring in my son's Paw Patrol car from CostCo appears to be 18 gauge. I'm concerned going from 1x6V motor & Bat to 2x12V motors and a 12V Bat, that I may burn out some wiring or the circuit board. Have you had any issues with this?

The other wire was 16g. You would be okay using 16g and running up to18v or 20v battery. I wouldn’t run a 24v because that will cause other issues on the car. The fuse was 30 amp, and those came in the pack of inline fuses that I bought

So I’m currently taking apart my daughters Elsa Jeep Kid Trax brand. Trying to upgrade from this kit. Got the whole kabootle. Nothing is matching up. The molds on the wheels are different from the gearbox and so on..the spot for the 12v battery is too small compared to the OEM one…do you have a recommendation on where to look to get the right parts?
@DadHacks
@DadHacks Жыл бұрын
Kid Trax is one for the brands that uses their own molds for their gearbox. You can search Amazon for Kid Trac 12v gearbox. As for the battery, you could wire two 12v/4ah batteries in series for a 12v 8ah battery or look into getting a 12volt power tool battery (but you will want to make sure it doesn’t discharge too low).

Hey, I feel confident I can pull this off, thanks for such a great tutorial, however just wanted to ask, so if I upgrade the 12v battery and the 12v motors, will I be able to still charge the car via the same charger that came with the car? My battery is under the seat so it wouldn't be practical to keep removing the seat to keep charging the battery.
@DadHacks
@DadHacks Жыл бұрын
No, you will need a new charger. Look for a 12v charger that has the same port as your stock charger. Typically, they look like this: a.co/d/8b9E6tO … if it looks like that, you can order that one and use it on your car

@@4dee103 So the main issue is probably the motors. Even though the are 12 volt, they are probably low RPM. Depending on the brand of the car, switching out the gearbox and motor could cost about $35. I should have a link for high speed motors/gearbox in the description of the video

@DadHacks
@DadHacks 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! It sounds like the control board is tripping because too much current is being drawn through it when it’s on the manual drive setting, this is likely due to the new 40,000 rpm motors. You have 2 options. The easiest is just to replace the control board, however this may only temporary fix the problem. The other solution is to completely bypass the control board and wire the battery straight to the motors, however this option will leave you without the parent remote control function. (Here is a link to a replacement 12v control board. www.amazon.com/dp/B07QX1T1YS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_JB7SX62JEC8KXD1JQ2S5?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 )

Was thinking of using a motorcycle batt.would the amperage be to high,and what should be the amperage on batt?
@DadHacks
@DadHacks 2 жыл бұрын
The higher amperage would just increase the run time for the power wheels. If the voltage is higher than 12 volts (actually up to 18v is fine), then the motor is likely to burn out. Idea amperage is 12amp. The 12v/12amp battery is the size/weight combo for most car. (But definitely check the size of the battery compartment before buying the battery)

Will this fry the radio or LEDs? I notice ML Toys doesn't mention anything about the radio in their upgrade kits. We have the 1969 Bronco 6v. If it DOES fry the radio, does that interrupt power flow to the motor?
@DadHacks
@DadHacks Ай бұрын
I believe that’s a Kid Trax brand Bronco, which does not have a control board (which is a good thing), so it likely won’t be an issue going from 6v to 12v for the lights. It might be an issue for the radio, but double check to make sure the radio doesn’t run on AA batteries. But no, if the radio goes out, that’s not an issue for the motors, it will still run

@@dadfactslifehacks9627 I think it depends how its wired, in series or in parallel.. check with voltmeter how much volts at each motor to be sure. Were the LEDs much brighter? Where did you get the motors that fit? I was thinking of getting a 2nd 6v motor from rollplay directly. Did the rollplay audi have the gear on the 2nd wheel? I dont remember since I put it together years ago. I put a much bigger battery in the prego tractor, 12v and motor still 6v, runs well but I had to cut a bigger hole for the battery. The power wheels cadilac comes with 2 motors, 12v and was able to take it to 36v and it still ran fine but way too fast lol.. 24V was more than enough.

Correct. Look for a Weelye RX57 or Weelye RX24 as a replacement 12 volt board. Technically the motor would still work for a little while, but it’s best just to replace both. I’ve never had lights and sounds not work when upgrading from 6v to 12v. Assuming that the stock wiring is 16 gauge or 14 gauge, it will be fine to run 12 volts.

@moek.229 here’s a link to tall wheel hubs amzn.to/4atqEcS and one for shorter wheel hub amzn.to/3v3RfgL. Just measure the existing one you have on the other side to make sure it fits. There’s just too many issues jumping up to 24 volt on a 6 volt car, such as the pedal melting in the closed position and the car not stopping. Also, you aren’t going to get double the speed over a 12 volt motor, because the 24 volt motors they use have about the same RPMs as 12 volt motors, so it’s about the same speed.

Yup, it will be the same size (most likely a 550 motor). A word of caution, the stock gearbox typically has all plastic pieces on the inside, would could cause it to melt/ strip the gears. Buying a combo gearbox/motor is probably $5 more than just a single motor and it has a metal middle gear. Another issue could be the metal pinion on the motor that you buy could need to be changed out if the # of teeth don’t match up with the gear. You would need a pinion puller to take it off. For an extra $5, it saves a lot of headaches just buying the combo motor and gearbox

I've been in the Power Wheels game for over 20 years and let me go ahead and bring some insight to this because you know what something needs to be cleared up. on the stock wiring if you're running 18 volts you're not going to have a problem because by the time all the power actually gets in the motors you're actually only really providing about 14 volts to the actual Motors after it goes through the stock wiring. you are no way going to bring the motors out. What's actually going to happen is that your gearboxes will be the first thing to go. newer Power Wheels have a soft start feature I know that many of the Peg Perego models have it and just as of recently the Disney princess carriage has the same thing he usually goes out all the time so you need to purchase another one but it saves your gearboxes so that's a good thing. it does provide some lag on start but other than that it's not a big deal 6 volt Motors again it'll be fine with a 12-volt. what actually burns out the motors is too much weight in the vehicle again if you run it like an RC car you'll be just fine it won't be a problem however when your kids start getting kind of plump and the neighborhood kids decide to go ahead and take a ride that's when the motor is burnt out. the other source of motor is burning out is when someone tries to physically push the darn thing while the accelerator pedal is not depressed as it uses motor braking this is actually one of the biggest reasons why the motors give out and again gearboxes as well. I only suggest upgrade the wiring but again if you don't you're just going to have to do it later. your switches and everything else will end up taking the brunt. However I highly recommend that you install a high current relay between the motors and the actual control mechanisms because this will allow your switches to last a lot longer.. don't worry about rebuilding them seriously once they start getting wonky just go ahead and replace them with brand new parts. Save yourself the headache. if you want your new stuff to last longer then fill the darn thing up with some type of electric Dielectric grease and really jamming in there good fill it all the way up and then don't worry about it ever again but if you take them apart good luck putting them back together again. you are much better off during a very tiny pin hole on the side and then injecting the grease inside the mechanism. another thing to note is if you're going from 6 to 12 volts by the time you add your extra lighting and accessories which you're going to be adding because I know you're safe parent and you want your kids to be seen especially an LED whip antenna by the time you run all your accessories on a 6 to 12 volt swap you're going to realize that the motors really aren't going to be working that much harder especially with the led acid battery.. do you have power tools? Especially 12-volt power tools and a lot of batteries and chargers just use that the fast charge function usually works there a lot lighter they usually based on lithium and they usually put out a steady 12 volts whereas your lead acid battery will start to have some significant problems and voltage sag after just a few minutes of use. a cheaper option is just to get a parts power wheel and just use the extra battery extra wires and so forth from that and that way if anything breaks on it then you can swap it. You can also get the other motor from the other side transfer it into the power wheels that you actually want to make faster and Bob's your uncle. if you know how to build lithium ion battery packs then by all means do so make sure you provide the protection that you need but more than likely because most of these packs can be literally bought from Battery Surplus places well that's the way to go I would suggest a 14 Volt back or 5s and you should be fine. unless you have a soft start circuit do not use the rubber bands on the rear Traction tires it is a bad idea. if you know you're going to have neighborhood kids then find a way to disengage the brake portion of it just in case when you're not looking because next thing you know you'll have 13 or 14 year old kids think that it's fun to go ahead and take a ride on your daughter's full toy. Or your nieces what have you. one of the best mods you can do for the small little Power Wheels it's a try to make them all wheel drive it's not really all that hard and it's actually going to make your gearboxes last a lot longer and I do mean a lot longer. if your tires are starting to wear out you can get some black paint and some Liquid Nails mix it together and then make a nice little form on what's left of the traction pads and that will keep the wheels working for a darn long time until it wears down a lot better than replacing the wheels. Make sure the grease the axles. on many of these cheap Power Wheels especially the ones from China they come with a very subpar steering box put a bushing inside of it it'll take care of the Swap and make sure and bring anyone have to really worry about it ever again.

Great insight. Good to know that an 18volt battery wont burn out a 12volt motor. My next project is to add a lithium ion (18 volt) battery with a low voltage cutoff. I've heard that if you run 24 volts, you run the risk of melting the wiring on the "gas pedal", which would cause the car not to stop; have you heard that happening? Any risk of that happening on 18volts? What are your thoughts on using a road bike tire (instead of the mountain bike tires) on the front and back tires? Or should I just used the bike tire on the front wheels and use the liquid nails on the back tires? Thanks!

@@DadHacks a gas pedal or the switch that's underneath it will melt that stock voltage simply because the breaking effect is a short circuit on both Motors creating a very high voltage and current Spike. that's actually what cooks your switch. Not the higher voltage believe it or not. all the higher voltage does to the switch is simply put a greater braking load since it's going faster therefore creating a higher current and voltage Spike when the short circuit is needed for breaking. use a Ford starter relay. never worry about the problem again.. about the tires, use rubber on front and plastic always on the back especially with stock Power Wheels gearboxes just like at the drag strip , drag slicks have a certain amount of cushion for the drivelines used in these vehicles. that's basically what the plastic wheels are doing on a Power Wheels rubber tires are perfectly fine for the front.

@@MickeyMishra ok, just bought a relay switch; I’ll be adding that to the car!

@@MickeyMishra Another question, you said to add a relay to prevent a high voltage spike when the circuit shorts. Where does the relay go? I added a relay as part of my Low Voltage Cutoff protection since I switch to a lithium-ion battery pack. Will that 1 relay do the job, or does it need to be close to the gas pedal?
