In this video, Bill helps our friends Brett & Moxie replace their plastic turbo resonator with an upgraded metal one! The most frequent cause of limp mode on a T1N Sprinter is the original plastic resonators that burst at the seams over time. This inexpensive part bulletproofs your turbo air system further!

I bought a T1N with an OM647 engine two years ago. The last owner warned me about the weak engine that was that way when he got it. I watched your video and bought the part. Wow, what a change it made!!! when we got the old resonator off it had a loose top. It would open when boost was applied and dump overboard. Now it drives like it has a new bigger engine. Thank You, Sir.

This was the first FVM video I ever watched!!! So glad to have found it these years later!! UPDATE: So I bought a Sprinter based Winnebago view, DID NOT swap the resonator for a new one, and it created a significant obstacle 4 hours in to the first day on a group (me and four others) road trip to Canada. Moral of the story: DO IT NOW. I wish I had.

this video encouraged me to replace my resonator - the only problem i had was the two bolts that hold the bracket were a weird size - once i got them loose using needle nose vise grips I was able to finish with a 7mm wrench. i have torx sockets but none fit - so I don't really know what i was supposed to use - in the end all turned out well - THANKS FloridaVanMan!

This video and resonator saved me from having me throw more money into troubleshooting. Found the resonator as the culprit bc the old plastic one had a crack at the seam. Swamped right out and runs brand new. Thanks much. Now to address the shakiness which I believe is a trans problem.

My 2006 Sprinter resonator failed on the 4th of July, van went in to limp mode. I pulled it and used my solder iron to 'weld' the entire seam, pulling plastic from the thicker body lip of the resonator to puddle filler plastic in to the gap. Reinstalled and cleared the OBD II code and works great. I don't see this as a long term solution so I'm ordering an aluminum eliminator. This might help someone else who is stranded somewhere with the same issue. I think a plumbers torch heating the tip of an old screwdriver could get the same job done with a patient steady hand. Just make sure you order replacement resonator or eliminator ASAP to replace it.

The T1n I recently bought had the alternator stop charging. I had to remove the two bolts holding the aftermarket resonator. What a pain. The tiny heads on the bolts are hard to find a wrench to fit. I actually used old ignition wrenches in a 7/32 size. I replaced the bolts so they have regular 8mm wrench size.

friend make an oil separator up from clear tube to a T fitting where one hose comes back to the intake and a couple foot hose comes off the T to act as a catch area for the oil, stuffed with stainless steel Pot scrubber from dollar stores , the oil separates on the pot scrubber material and drains down to the T and into the short hose. The drain hose is capped so no vacuum issues he said. you drain the gunk out every few months and none gets in the inlet tract
@FloridaVanMan
@FloridaVanMan 5 ай бұрын
I might never understand why people do this. That "gunk" is motor oil settling out of the vapor escaping your crankcase. Why not fix the issue with a new or cleaned crankcase breather? We have a video showing how to clean it. A properly working breather will do exactly what the pot scrubbers are doing EXCEPT the oil drains back into the engine where it belongs, not into a clear tube for regular dumping. Take that homemade bandage off and fix the van!

The turbo resonator is a muffler on the turbo so we hear less of the wind-up. The aluminum replacement is better because it will never break like the plastic resonator. Some folks hear a difference in the sound of the turbo. Most don't because the chance is so small.

@elfrdr
@elfrdr 4 жыл бұрын
The MMS kit includes an OEM Mercedes resonator. I debated on installing the OEM resonator or the aluminum replacement, but my wife wanted the stock one as it is quieter, so I have a new plastic M-B resonator on my 2005.
@evetsegap
@evetsegap 3 жыл бұрын
I had a few failures of the stock plastic resonator so I bought one of these and drove several thousand miles with no issues. However, on a long trip through several western states my 2005 sprinter motorhome began acting like the resonator failed. (Just like the plastice resonators it happend after a long uphill climb) As it turned out a gasket had failed and caused a loss of boost in the turbo. I wonder if the reonators crack because of too much pressure and that gasket failed because it became the weak point once the plastic resonator was gone? Now I'm very tempted to take off the aluminum one and just keep a couple of the plastic one ones board. It's easier to replace one on the side of the road than it was to get towed 200 miles to a dealer and then pay about $2000.00 for the repair. It seems like some kind of pressure relief valve might be the best answer.
@FloridaVanMan
@FloridaVanMan 3 жыл бұрын
What you describe is not a common failure in the turbo. I suspect many hoses in the system become the weak point when the plastic resonator is eliminated. Hopefully not a seal in the turbo. Dorman makes a stronger plastic resonator, but that doesn't address your concern.

The resonators we get don't come with the O-ring so we reuse the one from the old resonator. If it seems to not fit into the turbo deep enough you might clock the turbo. We have a video for that. Or the metal bracket that holds the resonator might be bent.

Hey man ! I am down here in citrus springs FL from NC visiting my sister. Got a po299 code ( turbo underboost) on my way down. Got me here in partial limp mode. Will not get me back across the mountains to get home. Where you at ? Can you have a look at it for me? I may be headed down to Miami in a week or so. I could get it out of limp mode temporarily by turning off then restarting the engine. Then it would have more power until it went back into limp mode and hit 60 max on these flat roads. Not sure if I need to buy a new turbo…. Checked all hoses, air filter was fairly dirty. Would that even be the problem ? It wasn’t horrible dirty though. Do you have a way to contact ? Congrats and welcome to the Vanmily. The vans came equipped with a plastic turbo resonator, some folks refer to as the teapot because of its shape. It is essentially a muffler for the turbo noises. The originals fail at a seam in the plastic and the aluminum will never fail. If you drive with a soft foot, you'll never hear a difference. But when I throw down the accelerator I hear a little whistle that the original part may have muffled. Dorman makes an *unbreakable muffed version, but it is more expensive and not yet stood the test of time.

Get to the screen that shows the wrench and how many miles, then turn the key to glowplug position. 2. Press "Mi" twice quickly. 3. Switch ignition off. 4. Immediately press and hold "Mi" 5. I replaced the resonator with the bypass and that thing pulls! sounds so much healthier and nearly eliminated the limp mode. only if i went over 80 mph in certain conditions would the turbo cut out and i'd be at 60 mph until shut off and restart. Could it be something about the rear differential? I'd hear some sort of whirr back there like there was slight play or something against the driveshaft if that makes sense...
@FloridaVanMan
@FloridaVanMan 3 ай бұрын
The rear differential doesn't have any way of communicating a problem so that won't be the cause of limp mode. A compatible code reader to get the trouble codes will be the best way to get more clues about why this is happening.

I have a Dodge Sprinter 2500 2006, I have problem with a bad smell of fumes inside the cab, the mechanic charged the flexible pipe, the oxygen sensor the did the smoke test, I closed all the vents going into the cab, but the bad smell still there, and the more that I drive it the worse the smell gets, what can be causing this problem? Now the mechanic is telling me that maybe I have to change the turbo? But he is not sure that is the problem!!! They also changed the turbo actuator!!! The charged all the muffler pipe for leaks but everything looks good. Maybe you can help me???

How well do your back door seal? Anything that drips from the van gets caught in the turbulent air and splattered on the rear doors. I expect exhaust fumes also get swept into that area and into the van if the doors do not seal well at all. Black Death is a common cause for fuel smell in the cab but I hope your mechanic has looked under the plastic engine cover.

In the current social climate, I think we should consider renaming this problem. Perhaps ISL (injector seal leak)? The we get a van on the ranch that has ISL, you bet we will be making the video. Are you far from Daytona?

Can a bad one of these cause black smoke
@FloridaVanMan
@FloridaVanMan 3 жыл бұрын
Yes & no, bad air-fuel mix can cause black smoke. But that is not the normal symptom of a cracked turbo resonator in my experience. Limp mode with a swooshing noise that isn't noticeable at first, then within a hundred miles gets louder until you cannot ignore it.

A catch can does not fix ANY problem! An oil catch can is a hack that serves zero purpose in a Sprinter and creates a service nuisance with potential giant mess. Why not fix the problem correctly and clean or replace the crankcase breather, keeping the oil in the engine where it belongs? Regardless, it has nothing to do with turbo resonators.

Does bad resonator cause poor mpg and coal rolling???
@FloridaVanMan
@FloridaVanMan 3 жыл бұрын
A bad resonator is just a turbo leak, similar to a split hose. Loss of turbo can definitely cause black smoke and poor mpg, but on a Sprinter you should get kicked to limp mode with a turbo leak that big.

So, sorry to bump in here.. uh the turbo De-Resonator, made of metal carries the Resonance forward, thus it continues, this kills the Turbo. so a plastic de-resonator is used to stop the resonance... A 30 dollar lifetime guarantee one is available at every auto store in the world. Usually the connection and hoses and O-roings, and at the mouth of the Intake manifold splits are the problem... with proper turbo pressure.
@FloridaVanMan
@FloridaVanMan 3 жыл бұрын
A "Resonator" is simply a muffler that works at a particular RPM range. Mufflers soften all sound frequencies and RPMs, while resonators eliminate specific sound frequencies with less flow restriction than broad-range mufflers. I'm not clear what you mean. Are you talking about an additional part called De-resonator, or replacing the plastic teapot shaped piece with something you find anywhere for $30? Our service manuals refer to this part as a resonator, and nothing that fits can be bought at local stores in the USA for $30. With over 520,000 miles on my van, I can assure you the aluminum pipe does not cause any damage to the turbo. Any resonance carried forward is absorbed in the intercooler.

@@FloridaVanMan I think the European models are even better? I don't have an EGR or a resonator on either of mine. Apart from one injector passing away, the injector seals failing, an alternator and a couple of pulleys all I have done to that engine is change filters and oil, it's one of the best designed light commercial diesel engines ever built. If they had used screw in injectors and made servicing the glow plugs easier, none could better it .
@FloridaVanMan
@FloridaVanMan 4 жыл бұрын
I have to agree with you there, we got some extra tweaks that makes things better in some ways, but ""better"" in other ways. For example, our 2004-2006 engines have the lower profile intake manifold making glow plug access a cinch. The EGR is generally reliable in our experiences, as long as you clean it yourself at a given interval or just accept that if you don't do anything to them they will break eventually. The resonator is usually a "change once at 100k, never worry about it again" part. Injector seals is something any Sprinter engine seems to have a problem with, but to me that's another part of routine maintenance. Not to mention, maintenance is pretty damn easy on these vans. I agree with you Zambo, the 5 cylinder variants that exist in our T1Ns are some of the best light duty diesel engines ever built.

@@FloridaVanMan Brilliant reply, I didn't think about it but, if the injector seals fail between 100-150K changing them at 80K should stop the problem. I wait until they go then take it to an Iranian mechanic I know who's worked on a fleet of them for over 20 years. I have read so many horror stories of people having nightmares getting them out it's worth the £60 he charges not to give myself the headache.
