1:45 this is an advanced building technique, but technically you can attach your exhaust input (or cylinder) to either green peg, as turbochargers work with gas flowing in any direction.

I got my right and left confused... I can never tell my family this. 😅

Technically, you didn't. You can attach the cylinder to either green peg. Either of them can be used as the exhaust input/output, as there's no flow direction requirement on either type of turbocharger.

As someone who has spent most of a day just building turbo charged super engines for fun (4-8 hours), part of me was hurt at these examples. lol. However, that makes me excited to see the part 2!

i love engines, idk why, but i do, i spent hours making a 5x5 turbo charger engine with 2.2k power at around 800power/mat :D. the exhaust spaghetti hell is real

The rule of thumb I use is that each cylinder can fully power about 1.5 turbochargers. 1.6 if your cooling is really good.

I thought I mastered fuel engines at this point and I've made some amazing engines. I didn't realise the inline turbochargers had to use pressure though. xD Maybe I can make some of my designs a bit more efficient now. Thank you Borderwise and Tolwrath!

Update after looking at Tolwrath's museum and Borderwise's video. I upgraded my old exclusive turbochargers engine 5x5x6 to a hybrid with a few superchargers and radiators. Old stats at 25/50/75/100 power (with Power/Material in brackets): 693 (692.8), 1440 (719.9), 2205 (735.1), 2979 (744.8) to new: 849 (849.5), 1657 (828.5), 2395 (798.2), 3057 (764.1) So little boost at high rpm due to radiators but since I had spare room after deleting inline turbochargers (I didn't have any extra exaust pressure to use) I slapped in some turbochargers aswell. This is a significant upgrade at low RPM! Again thanks Borderwise and Tolwrath! This is merely ONE of my designs that is now altered but just knowing how it works has already helped a lot.

Things I learned after the video + Tolwraths engine museum (LOOK AT IT PEOPLE) + experimenting: 1: It's better to put THREE cylinder turbochargers on a cylinder + carburettor even if it doesn't use full exhaust pressure than using 1 cylinder turbocharger at max exhaust pressure used. Explanation + note: The reason for this is that the efficiency itself doesn't go up since it doesn't use full pressure... but it still improves cooling. Now you CAN use extra exhausts on the cylinder BUT that lowers the exhaust pressure for the cylinder turbo!. This is where you can make a choice as a player. use 1 cylinder turbocharger and more superchargers or 1 cylinder turbo charger and make it more compact or 3 cylinder turbochargers or 1 cylinder turbocharger and then combo it with a inline turbocharger depending on remaining exhaust pressure (less efficient but depends on your design). 2: If you can use cylinder turbochargers over inline ones do so. If you use enough cylinder turbochargers you won't have any extra gas PRESSURE left to use anyway for the inline turbocharger. Explanation: Inline turbochargers are USELESS if they are not supplied with extra gas pressure. At that point they work as an expensive pipe. Note: You STILL need an exhaust. extra gas pressure is NOT the same as gas. If you don't vent the extra pressur-less gas it will still heat up the engine (thus lowering efficiency and possibly overheating it). 3: Fuel engine supremacy explanation: none needed. note: not explosive and doesn't cause fire unlike stinky steam ;p thank you for coming to my ted talk. Hopefully this can help someone else in the future not make the same mistake I did.

just as inline turbos can be attached to cylinders directly so can cylinder turbos be attached to an exhaust line and they'll work just as fine

The turbocharger engine I really like is one not of my own design, but I can't figure out where I first saw it. It's called the Goliath, with a volume of 5x5x5, where the inner 3x3x3 is a crankshaft core with carburetors on each corner, arranged so that each carb is connected to 3 cylinders. The outer 5x5x5 shell is where the cylinder turbochargers (4 on each face, for a total of 24, meaning each carb gets 3 turbos) and exhaust piping go. PPM varies from 710ish at 25% RPM to 760ish at 100%, with a max power of just over 4500. It's not an extendable design, cause all the efficiency is a result of utilizing the extra faces to add more turbos, but because of the compact size and decent PPV (37 at 100%), it's useful in large builds as a distributed solution for engine power. You can place these guys everywhere, and so even if the enemy takes out a few, you're still in business.

It is often better to have more turbos per cylinder with lower pressure than have less turbos with higher pressure as the power/material boost doesn't scale linearly with exhaust pressure. A turbo with 6/6 exhaust pressure gives a power/material boost of 180. While a 3/6 turbo gives a boost of ~141 and a 1.25/6 turbo gives ~104. Any turbo without exhaust pressure gives no boost and you are left with the power boost but power/material loss of having only a carburettor. This makes engines with turbos in series often less efficient as the first turbo takes all the pressure and the turbos later have no pressure. Also the Priority slider limit doesn't scale with engines, you just happened to have 3 engines. You also can't click drag the priority value for some reason, I guess the increments on it are too big.

default turbo chargers are great for smaller engines, and inline turbochargers are good for large gas systems to redistribute pipe energy. 680 vs 750 ppm i nthe same ppv basically for 5x5x7 designs

Fun facts about turbos. Injectors add almost enough for two turbos. Are you going to do chained enginses. Ive made a crazy one.
