Very nicely done. Many props run off 12v so this could easily be adapted to those props using a 12v relay and the same pir, but no need for the usb power supply. Gonna give that a try.

To avoid any problems I would use a separate relay for each prop, but you should be able to split the one trigger wire coming from the PIR to each relay's Trigger/IN terminal.

You can try, fresh batteries would probably work fine, but as they are used the voltage drop may affect it. I would suggest try using a phone charging battery pack. That’s 5v and should last all night, p,us it’s rechargeable

Yes, there are other similar devices around, just make sure that they only close contacts to make continuity and that they DO NOT supply any power. If you put voltage in to a "Try Me" port you'll fry the main board of the prop.

This works great for battery operated props. I’m building a couple of props using deer motors. I saw your reply for wiring to a windshield washer motor, using the heavier relay. I am somewhat confused about connecting the deer motor to the relay and to an external power source. Maybe a drawing? I’m a senior without an electronic background, I appreciate your help! Also, can the relay/PIR be connected to the same external power or should it remain on the 5volt power?

I turned the sensitivity all the way down but still keeps triggering. Am I sunk? How can I reduce the sensitivity further??
@TheMakersCave
@TheMakersCave 7 ай бұрын
If you're using the PIR sensor bare, that could be your problem. The PIR sensing scope area looks like a cone, narrow at the sensor and it widens as it goes out. You could be picking up things that are to the far right and far left. Trying making a tube so the sensor can only see directly in front of it. Also make sure that it's not picking up movement of other props within the sensor range or scope.

Hey there. This is partially what I was looking for although for what I'm want/thinking the setup may be different. Question: I'm wanting to use a PIR sensor with a 12v wiper motor. Could I do this by using a 12v relay? So the 12v 5a power supply and PIR connect to the 12v relay with the motor connecting to the NO of the relay? Or would this burn up the pir sensor?
@TheMakersCave
@TheMakersCave Жыл бұрын
The PIR I use in the video can actually handle 12V power to operate, however the trigger pin on the PIR would still be only 3.3V when activated. As you mentioned, you might want to use the 12V version of the realy used in the video. Here's a link: amzn.to/3SnHYWC. Using this relay allows everthing to be powered by your 12V power source.

Exactly what I was looking for with the mono plug trigger, but I'm assuming you can replace the USB wire with a battery pack with on/off switch instead. The animatronic will have its own battery pack, and the PIR sensor has its own, correct?
@TheMakersCave
@TheMakersCave Жыл бұрын
Yep, you can replace the USB with a battery back. I don't think 4 x (AA or AAA) at 1.5V each (6V total) will hurt anything. The PIR sensor is powered through the usb and it will take the 6V.

That PIR sensor and be set to latch the relay for varying seconds by turning the potentiometer that's on the PIR board. Just note that you only have to move the pot a VERY ,VERY small amount. The only thing I would suggest is using a heavy duty relay. Take a look at this, it might help. Once you move up to a HD relay the PIR needs a little modification to fire the relay. gravedecor.com/product/motion-activated-relay/

At the end of the video you demonstrated the motion switch with a 12v light which inspired me. I need a relay that will turn on on a 12v light when 5v is detected. I’m totally ok with the 12v light having its own power supply like you demonstrated. I just need the trigger to be 5v instead of motion. Do you have any thoughts on how to construct that? @TheMakersCave

Yep, you would wire it like in the video. Take the neg of your 12V & attach it to the motor. Take the pos of the 12V and wire that to the Com(common) terminal of the relay and wire the NO(normally open) terminal of the relay to the other contact on the motor.

Can you hook this up to the small two pin "Try Me" port on the skeletons that everyone sells now and if so does that connector come with? With additional wiring can you hook them up in serial so you can trigger several to go on at once?
@TheMakersCave
@TheMakersCave 9 ай бұрын
That is exactly what this is made for. I include he plug but you don't have to use it. Just find the two wires for the "try me" button. The Motion relay box has a 3 conductor wire coming out of it with Black (COM), Red (NO), and Yellow (NC) wires. Connect one button wire the black (relay common) and the other button wire to the Red (Relay Normally Open). Now when motion occurs the relay will make a connection just like the button. I would hook more than one skelly or prop to these wires, you never know what voltage is on different props that could short them out. There are dual, 3, and even 4, channel relay blocks that you could use. I have those and can configure a motion relay activator to work with these. If you're interested just let me know.

What do you think about the SENSKY BS010L DC 12V to 30V 3A Mini Pir Motion Sensor on Amazon? I’m no expert on this but it looks like it’s already pretty close to being ready to use. Thank you.
@TheMakersCave
@TheMakersCave 9 ай бұрын
That is a voltage pass-through PIR. Which basically means whatever DC voltage you put at the input will be present on the output when the replay activates. These are great if you want directly power something, motors, lights, etc. as long as it's DC. What I show in the video is how motion controls a relay, the video project does not provide power when the relay is activated, it just closes the Normally Open and Common relay terminals making continuity, like a switch does. That's what the "Try Me" ports on props are looking for, not voltage, just a contact of two terminals. Now you can always use the Amazon device to power a 12V relay, those relay contacts (NO & Com) could be used to trigger a prop.
@TheMindofRobert

Today, I purchased a new/used animated witch that the previous owners bought at Walmart. Never used and still in the box. After putting everything together, I noticed where the motion sensors supposed to be on her chest, that it had pulled away and one of the tiny wires had come loose. I tried to fix this myself but it was nearly impossible because the wires are so small, they're impossible to strip to reattach. Plus, they are very short to begin with and there's not enough extra length to use. They barely reach the hole for the sensor to attach. I did my best and she is working and does activate, but it seems to be more from sound and not motion. By the way, are these 2 things separate? In other words, if sound activation is working, is that from a different sensor? Can one work without the other independently? I do have a "demo" feature with my On/Off button, but there is no "Try Me" button that I can find. Can I get a new motion sensor and relay box like in your video and make this work? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I only paid $40 for her and don't really want to return her to the seller. Hi Steve! Great video! I tried doing the same thing with 5v LED lights, but they're wired to a 6v battery pack (4-1.5v AA batteries), which should be enough power and I wired the 5v relay module to another 6v battery pack (4-1.5v AA batteries). However, the lights don't turn on. The relay seems to work, but that's it. I'm not sure what I could be doing wrong, but I was hoping you could help me. From the 5v relay module, I have the positive wire connected to NO, which is then connected to the positive 5v LED lights. The com from the relay module is connected to the positive wire to the battery pack. The negative wire from the battery pack is connected to the negative wire to the LED lights. However, there is one more wire from the LED lights (which is the output wire) that I didn't initially connect to any of the wires. But, when nothing was working, I connected it to the common wire and positive battery pack wire, with no results. Could you help me out with this?

Hi, thanks for watching. It sounds like you are on the right track with putting the neg to neg and splitting the positive so each end goes to the NO and Com of the relay. The thing that stands out to me is that you said there is a third wire on the LED strip. That sounds like you have and addressable LED strip which needs a controller to work. Hi great video but i have a question as im running into trouble. The PIR only outs 3.3v and wont trigger the relay :( (sad face) how are you getting 5v from this PIR ? (HC-SR501)
@TheMakersCave
@TheMakersCave Жыл бұрын
What kind of realy are you using? The 5V relays I show use the 5V to power the realay and the relay board. The relay board has a "IN" or trigger port, when a small voltage, like 3.3v, is applied to the port the relay triggers. The 3.3V coming straight from the PIR will not, as you found out, will not trigger a relay only. If you are using a relay board and it's not trigger on the 3.3v then make sure that the HIGH/LOW jumper is set to HIGH. If your board doesn't have such a jumper than the board is LOW trigger only and won't work.

I was just thinking. I will be using these on the "Try Me" ports of props. When you push the button (or activate via relay) once, the prop does its routine. If you push it again while the routine is underway, the routine is interrupted and stopped. So I'm wondering if, with a short delay of a few seconds, it may be possible for multiple triggers by the same subject to happen, thereby making the prop start, stop, start again, etc.? If, of course, "delay" means how long the relay is kept activated by the sensor. Hope that makes sense.
@TheMakersCave
@TheMakersCave 2 жыл бұрын
What happens when you push and hold the button? Does the prop activate? Most of mine work this way. Then you set the PIR jumper to Single Trigger mode with a long enough delay. That stops a re-trigger while it's working.

@@TheMakersCave I can only try the one that has not yet been packed away, and it does its routine and then stops, even though the button is still pressed. Can more motors be added? Do I need more power?
@TheMakersCave
@TheMakersCave Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching. This particular project is basically just a relay. When motion is detected the two leads just complete a circuit, the two leads provice not power. For example, let's take a moter and hook it up to a battery. Now you have the positve of the batttery going to one lead of the motor and the negative going to the other lead on the motor. now the motor will run continuously. Now lets cut the positive wire in the middle. the motor stops running. Now take one end of the cut wire and attach it to one of the leads of the motion dector relay lead and the other cut end to the other relay lead. Now when motion is dected it closes the motion sensor relay completing the ciruit and the motor runs. Here's a schematic from our website: gravedecor.com/download/motion-sensor-relay-schematic/

Im assuming you have seen the animated fuse boxes before. I have a question regarding that prop. The animation doesn’t seem to have a built in timer. It’s either on or off. I may have answered my own question. I shorted the wires out on the try me Button and it runs for 15 seconds. I wish I could activate it and then just have it run for 5-10 seconds and then shut off.
@TheMakersCave
@TheMakersCave Жыл бұрын
Actually that can be done using a relay with a built in timer. The motion relay in the video would activate the timer-relay which would activate the fuse box for a set amount of time. The timer relay looks for a LOW signal to activate so you would take the normally open leads from my motion sensor relay and connect one wire to a ground and the other lead to the trigger of the timer-relay. The normally open terminals of the timer-relay would, of course, make the fuse box work. It would run for the seconds you set the timer-relay to. In order for this to work you would permentaly tie the try-me wires together so the fuse box would always run. You would use the timer-relay to control the power going to the fuse box. The timer-relay would power the fuse box for the time you set. Depends on the output voltage of the charger. The relay in the video will only run on 5 volts, any higher and you'll burn it out. Also, the PIR only takes voltage between 5V and 24V so you'll have to make it falls between that. They make 12V relays like the one I use, but again most laptop chargers run at about 19 volts. @TheMakersCave
@TheMakersCave 11 ай бұрын
I state that because some viewers weren't paying attention when they would order their PIR and get the 5V version and feed it with 12V. The 12V ones, like in my video, can handle VCC voltage from 5V to 12. I said that so there wouldn't be a smoke show if some one wasn't being careful :) The logic output/trigger line of those type of PIR's is only around 3V, even if you power the PIR with 12V. That's so the the output/trigger is compatible with TTL analog inputs of controllers like an Arduino or Raspberry Pi. So, no, your relays activated by 12V would not work with these PIR sensors.
