Adam Weber It totally depends on the compression settings you set. I don't have mine set to HD, but it still looks great on my 720p HDTV. I could set it to higher quality, but I'm pleased with it and it saves me disk space. (I use about 350MB per standard 40ish minute TV show).

It's a roku private channel. Not an iPhone app. If you don't have a dedicated computer running as a server in your home/apartment you are behind the times.. You can always get a used iphone 4 and leave it in your living room as a remote. They are only 50-70 bucks. No need for a data plan. --Unless you want to record shows while you're driving. Good luck

Jay Preis It really depends on your Lifestyle Jay. When your work station freezes/updates you must restart, everyone on the network feels the inconvenience of it all. When there is cyclical / never-ending demand for data, a common example being Downloading Torrents / Streaming MoviesTV ..multiple Rokus simultaneously playing.. it is unfair for your desktop. Eating up processing power that could otherwise be allocated to an old laptop. Yes, few people have a personal server. However, ...most people do have issues with pinwheels / hour-glassing , opening too many tabs. If your computer is background processing aka serving, it makes it difficult to work smoothly. Even simple tasks such as editing an image or dragging a file into a new folder become Dreadfully time consuming. My household does not subscribe to cableTV, perhaps you do. All of this mumbo-jumbo becomes more apparent the more independent you become. Contrary to popular belief, cable tv is not live. and newer programing may be downloadable within a few hours. With the Nowhere Channel, I receive all the Live News I need. I suggest that anyone interested in running a server attempt to obtain two things: 1. An extra computer: ( It can be old! ) Most computers have more than enough power. I purchased a used MacMini. 2. A network storage device. (External Hard Drive) I purchased a used Drobo. My opinion is, Behind the Times was an accurate way of describing being Left Behind. Nobody said it would be lonely.. there is plenty of company.. Even though cableTV has been around for many years, in the light of todays technology, It can realistically be described as an expensive cloud service. To be honest, I am not that good with computers. I was just trying to save money. After canceling my Landline and CableTV subscriptions, I was able to upgrade all the Displays in my house with the savings. The only thing I miss are the commercials.. haha sometimes. ;)

If someone in your family wants to watch a movie and sling it to a Roku on a tv there needs to be a computer On and Running for this to happen.. You never use a work station for "server applications". Too much stuff running in the background. You use an old computer you don't care about and leave it On and Running always. As long as there is a TV/display on in the house there is a need for continuous data. What about an Alarm System..OR an Exterior Camera? A Website !!! There are a lot of reasons why you may need a server. Synchronizing contacts / appointments across your cellphones as you walk in your home.. Maybe you have an Email Server.. For privacy reasons. FYI US gov does NOT need a warrant to see your records -if you are on big email server such as Yahoo!/Gmail.. That's reason enough to have a personal server. Big companies are being hacked all the time. If you become a small target your safer. Perhaps you do not have a new AirPrint printer. You could simply download an application so you can print from your smart phone. It goes to your server first then to a printer. Roku has LIVE TV. The stations are located on Private Channels. If you know of a website that has Live Tv you can turn that link into a Roku Private Channel.. That is why Roku is so nice! Otherwise you're stuck watching TV Clips...OMGOSH. Seriously? Anywhere there is Wifi you have your favorite Content from your Server. Take your Roku with you to a hotel on business trips if you like. How dare you answer my post about what's legal and what's illegal ! Day trading paper assets is fine. However, If you are not buying tangible things such as machines like a real capitalist then your going to be stuck Renting. Hardware and the Correct Data is all you need. It's a game of inches and they all add up. Perhaps you are later in life and, you do not find any of these things important. Think about your Family. You buy the tuner-- connect the TV antnena to the Coax side of it, Connect the USB side to a PC (you can't screw this up)--- The PC connected to your network streams it to your roku box (also connected to your network)-- PC has to be on for it to work.

+JustinLodes It is called ElGato EyeTV USB Stick (for Northamerica = mexico, canada, usa you need an ATSC version of it), but beware: it is very pricey. If you want DVR functionality for live tv go for a digital converter box with a USB port, those have DVR functionality, just split the coaxial coming down from your antenna, feed one to the converter and one for the TV so you only use the converter as needed.

you also need an AB switch so you can switch between the signal and so you can also watch just the tv while recording a different channel. similar to a VCR.. the vcr/tv button is the same as an AB switch. As for a converter box w/ recording options beware that unlike dvr boxes from cable companies the recordings are not compressed and while 1gb on a dvr is about 1 hour, if I remember correctly 1 hour was like 6 gigs so it'll take up much more space. You are better off hooking up a 1tb external hard drive.

I don't think you can because I believe you need to plug the Eyetv device into your Roku and there's nowhere to plug anything into a roku stick.

Thank you Mikhel Barajas. Yeah *****, when I saw this video I immediately searched to find out how much it would cost me. And on average, that was the price. This guy shows a great idea, but it isn't really free. Doesn't mean it's bad, it's just an investment.
