They are indeed called a hat blocks :) Our modern mass-produced hats doesn't get proper treatment and it shows pretty clearly in how flat your thrifted hat was. The hats from the days of hats, 20s included, used a stiffening material made of a of ethylacetate solution. I've did this with a 50s style straw hat I made last year. I'm afraid I don't know the English or dutch name of it but here is a link to a Swedish hatter and milliner (yes, she's both and she is wonderful!). She can probably help you figure out what it's called and where you can it.
