Hey everyone!
This weeks video is about converting our old garden tool shed into a 3 or 4 season greenhouse. We remove the roof and substitute with polycarbonate panels. Insulation is put in and a subfloor built. Part 2 will cover finishing the inside and setting up the environment controls. Please like and subscribe to see more!
Much Love,
Ty

Cool idea. I would however not suggest insulating with a vapor barrier like this so moisture which will always make it's way in will become trapped in the walls unless you like mold. Use a foam sealer all around the joists and then put in the insulation that way if moisture does find it's way inside it can dry and then you also have excellent air sealing.

Hi, I thank you for your advice, however I have been instructed differently. Perhaps different climate. I suggest everyone get a qualified local to advise on their individual situation and build.

I'm in the middle of doing this right now. I'm confused about the insulation, vapor barrier and walls, I had no intention of doing that because it's so humid in most greenhouses. I found your video looking for flooring ideas because I don't want to use wood due to the amount of water likely to spill. Maybe we're growing different things? I'm planning on a cement slab, then composite decking boards for the floor. My shed looks exactly like yours, except mine is only 8x8. I live zone 6 growing zone, so it does get cold in winter. I like the silicone caulk idea - I think I'll use marine caulk. I'm sure your greenhouse is done & in use, hope it all turned out well!

Yeah I chose to insulate my floor and walls because I am in Zone 2A. I have another layer on top of my wood / trays to catch any dripping water. Humidity is fairly low in my area as well, so it’s not a huge concern for my application, but the insulation is key, and therefore vapour barrier is needed.

Great video -- and I just subscribed to your channel! But one question: why did you say at the start that you thought the greenhouse would be good for 3-4 years? Why wouldn't it last longer? I have a 16x8 shed in my backyard that I would LOVE to convert to a greenhouse, but not if it's only going to last a few years! Anyway, thanks for a really nice video! :)

Mine is still going great. I believe I said that because our shed was already fairly old and not in the best condition as it was. I didn’t really repair or improve the shed exterior where I left it as shed. I could probably spend a bit of money on shingles and ply wood to revamp it. Maybe that will come in a video next year 😂. Mine has actually lasted better than I anticipated.

Hi I am interesting in trying something similar. Have you tried heating in the winter? Have you experienced any moisture/ mold or mildew problems? I see you used a poly vapor barrier and then wood siding on top. Any issues with this? I am thinking of trying the same in a cold climate. Do you just fasten the wood inter siding directly on top of the plastic ? Thanks!

Hi Alex, I do heat as long as reasonable in the winter. No issues with mold or humidity, but then again I am in a dry cold/climate. No issues with using the wood over the vapour. Works the same as drywall would and keeps the cool air from mixing with the greenhouse interior moisture

Where were you able to find polycarbonate panels that big (hopefully somewhere that sells in the US?). I’m planning to do something very similar but have only seen 2ft x 8ft panels which will work, but it a bit more tedious and not as nice looking.

I just found some locally on my classifieds. There was a company advertising. I am in Canada though. I have no idea the cost of shipping for large 4x8 panels 😵

Hey Brian! I actually can’t remember the brand of panels, sorry. I had just searched for “ twin wall polycarbonate panels” mine are 10mm thick. I might go with a thicker panel if I could redo, just because I’m in zone 2

Did the heat stay in good?

It worked well until -25C, at which point it became too expensive to heat using electricity.

Could you not just put in the insulation by itself? I don't want to put the plastic or walls in mine. Would it be bad to just add the insulation?
@plntfriends
@plntfriends 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! if you don’t use vapour barrier, the warm, moist greenhouse air will mix inside the insulation with the cold air from outdoors and condense. It will then mold as there is no airflow through insulation,(because that is the whole point of it). If you are insulating you need a barrier. If you are not insulating then it doesn’t matter as there should not be a temperature difference inside your wall to cause condensation/mold.
