In the latest incarnation of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Andy Serkis and Toby Kebbell deliver human motion-capture performances to help bring the realistic apes to life. Shot with a combination of high-speed cameras, Mike Seymour breaks down the tech behind shooting the motion-capture scenes on location versus on a sound stage.

it’s crazy how well toby’s acting and facial expressions are, and how they were so well translated in the movie. it’s absolutely insane

The attention to detail, such as the anatomically correct neck muscle tensing, and raspberry blowing are what made this movie so great and believable. Even people who don't know what you're talking about when referring to such details will pick up on them subconsciously and simply say "this looks fake" and the suspension of disbelief is lost... Excellent job by the filmmakers on this one.

One of the reasons why this franchise are my favorite movies. All the actors are great! They gave the apes character and the whole team who made ever ape come to life and let us believe that they used real apes! Even if we know they aren’t real.

The problem with video games isn't the technology. We can basically get photorealism if we want it. The problem is the actual man hours that it would take to design a game with the integrity to honor that photorealism. And if you let players make their own choices, the amount of effort it would take to make sure the player never shatters that realism would be enormous. Think clipping textures, players moving against hard surfaces, etc. We can do it, but it wouldn't be worth it because games aren't designed as perfectly as they would look, and that alone shatters the illusion.

Doubtful. The final renders in the film took weeks (if not longer) to accomplish utilizing rooms of supercomputers working around the clock to crunch it out. To do such calculation in real time would require a degree of such computational power that fifteen years wouldn’t even come close to achieving. Tbh, such a level of fidelity isn’t really necessary for gaming. The reason they strive for such detail is that without it, the entire foundation of the film would be compromised. Not so with gaming. People play for gameplay, and the economic and labor investment simply isn’t worth it.

serpantseed08 Well there are already some games that emphasize on highly believable character models, such as L.A. Noire's facial expressions or Enslaved and DmC whose motion capture is amazingly well-done. Fun fact: Andy Serkis also did the motion capture in Enslaved :)

War is my favorite, but don't go in expecting a ton of action. It's a lot like Apocalypse Now, in that it's a slow burn and character driven story set during a war. Don't get me wrong, there is action, but is less than what most expected there to be and some people like my brother felt that they were misled. Anywho, like I said it's my favorite of the trilogy.
