Turning Modern Pumps into 18th Century Latchet Shoes

A shoe hack from Ye Olden Days of historical costuming, today I'll take you through how I take a pair of inexpensive modern heels and turn them into 18th Century appropriate shoes. This is great for when you're on a budget (all materials were less than $40), or if you are somewhere you can't buy ready-made historical shoes.

I have read scattered tutorials on this very topic... seeing this in action is THE BEST! THANK YOU for choosing to share this. Prior to Covid I was making weekly trips to the thrift shop scooping up likely suspects in the shoe section. Have you ever tried to "build out" a Louis heel? I have a tube of epoxy putty daring me to try and so far it has me too intimidated. Side note- I found tiny metal clips at the local dollar store that have soft (pink!) rubber tips on the clamping part as well at on the grips. I have used them on silk ribbon on a hat brim, so I imagine they would be kid to silk on a shoe.

I've never tried to build out the heel, I've always been afraid that the epoxy wouldn't hold up. I know that logically it shouldn't, but I still haven't mustered the courage to do it. XP If you do it, then I'd love to see how it turns out!

What a great idea to create a new heel shape! Propoxy plumber’s putty is very strong. I bet you could make an entire heel out of it.

There is a tutorial on KZfaq posted by someone in Lagos who covers shoes in this way to makeover old shoes for people who can't afford, or find, shoes to match specific outfits. Instead of removing the sole as you did he covers the shoe and glues the fabric down to the old sole then when finished applies a new rubber sole over the old. Much faster and the new sole finishes off the shoe so it looks brand spanking new.

@@ClusterFrock Have you ever done this using leather instead of cloth? I don't think cloth will be sturdy enough, because I'll be outside or in an open-air pavilion most of the time.Looking at reproduction shoes, it looks as though if I use leather, I'll need to add stitching before I glue it on, for decoration & for a finished look. I ran out of time for this month's event (Saturday August 15) because I was working on other clothing, but I plan to start work on the shoes soon.

I absolutly loved this video. I've wanted a pair of Pompadour's for a while now, but it's expensive for me right now. I'm so gonna raid my mom's closet to see if she has a pair or 2 of this kind of shoes. Just one question, have you ever used this method with silk? I just wanted to know if the glue isn't going to stain the silk. And if so, is there another method? Or you should avoid using lightweight fabric? Love from Portugal.
@ClusterFrock
@ClusterFrock 4 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried using silk, but the Shoe Goo does stain some fabrics, so I'd do a test swatch with whatever fabric you wanted to use. You can also experiment with other glues to see if there's an alternative that will work. Good luck with your project! :D

I'd love to show you my shoes but don't know how to put a photo here. I don't remove the sole just cut 1.5cm. between upper and sole all round to separate enough to push my chosen fabric in. I just use the glue for stick-on soles or Bostic to reglue. Any good contact adhesive will work. I glued the top fabric only where it won't show and did hand sewing too..... My shoes are on the Facebook group called 18th. Century Sewing. Posted by myself Maureen Revill.

In Showtime's "The Tudors," Anne Boleyn is chasing Henry with Elizabeth in her arms, begging him to be better to her.....but her dress lifts up to expose a white shoe that looked pretty much like the plain pump started with here. Tacky detail in a series that was quite lavish in clothing. Too bad ClusterFrock wasn't on set. Now, in all fairness, they did make a very fancy 16th century shoe for Henry's sister in an act of athletic delicto with Charles Brandon... Henry Cavill (Superman)... on shipboard, right after he promised King Henry he would protect her with his life! Well, her feet were up in the air, so I guess they had to be more precise with the shoe style. Don't be judgemental, girls, just about any woman's feet might go into the air for Henry Cavill.

I did a little calculation and found that sadly where I live this is not really cheaper than ordering those shoes from American Duchess or something. It all starts with finding that heel, which is completely unheard of in my native language, and the only shoes that I can find have the wrong shape altogether, are very expensive, and/or don't come in size 11 - unfortunate. So I think for the moment I'll either simply wear the most conservative pumps I own or order.
