Unless someone has already mentioned it, the android head unit opens up a world of options now that you have it. First off, you can add a Bluetooth OBD2 reader to pair with the head unit and run Torque Pro and create custom software gauges to read out practically any possible engine sensor. Secondly, you can install an aftermarket multi camera birds eye 3d interpolating system. This not only replicates the 360 degree overhead camera system available in say the new land rover defender (perfect visibility for reversing and 4x4 wheel placement) , but it can also serve as a 360 degree dashcam, all working off software on the head unit. This is just the tip of the iceberg tho, if you factor in raspberry pi/arduino, your only limitation is your ingenuity.

Awesome video Patrick, and no wonder you are smiling! I am like you, that is the perfect HU for today, since it combines everything that we do and all in one place. That 10in screen is massive, but I remember when I first got my 7in GPS screen - size matters in that situation. I am a big fan of what you did re powering HU and UHF from the 2nd battery - I had never thought of doing that as it's the cat stereo, right! Nice video mate Really nice 2-DIN NAV unit, better than my laptop mounted on 80's passenger grab rail. But I think I achieved this same goal of isolating the cranking battery a lot easier than you did dude... I simply installed a 200AMP Red Arc isolator between them. I wired it so it opens ONLY when A) the alternator feeds it 12VDC, or B) a toggle switch feed from 2nd battery (as a get out of gaol free). So my whole camping solution always runs from the 2nd battery - unless the car is started/running, and then Red Arc prioritises charging the primary battery first.

I have the Sony XAV-AX8000 which I think is great. It fits into a single din slot with the 9” screen and has the ability for moving up and down and tilting onto different angles. It’s in my 1996 nj pajero and I don’t get any glare on the screen. As you would know from your old pajero, the radio slot is mounted down a bit low under the air con controls, but I found it works well where it is. Very responsive screen and load up time and works very well with apple carplay. Keep up the good work with the cruiser. That new head unit and switch panel "is grouse" 😁 I got the XAV-AX5000 instead of the XAV-AX3000 for my 80 Series, for the same reasons you showed. The 5000 has the same screens as smartphones - TFT Active Matrix. It has a greater viewing angle than the 3000. The 5000 is multi-touch capable, while the 3000 isn't - which only has a resistive screen. My 5000's screen have the same touch feel and responsiveness as my iPhone. Interesting to hear your opinions of the Sony head unit. Just installed a XAV-AX1000 on Friday. Was blown away by the improvement in sound. It has a built in 55w amplifier or something. I am no audiophile and this was my first time working with a car Radio (I'm 19). In any case it was for a 2010 76 series Land Cruiser. And I can tell you the OEM radio is crap. The car did come with aftermarket pioneer speakers. 2 in the front and two in the back. Though the previous owner who had the car for almost two years did a very dodgy install. I even found a Sony speaker floating behind the radio, it's not even connected. It has been floating around for 9 years! (there was no damage it was wedged in). I am a bit of a Sony admirer, but I am not a fan of all their products.

I really hate how they backtracked from the 100 to 1000 model. Unfortunately it is no longer available locally and I was not going to buy it through Amazon. They removed Android Auto and you can't set a custom wallpaper. At first I hated the tuner interface, but after learning how it works and how to save channels it is very intuitive. Though I wish you could name the channels. Will see what I think of it in 6 months time. No it's not my car I just daily it to take my sister to school or run errands. Still need to install the reverse camera. Also the fact that Apple car (or Android auto on the 100 model) is wired only is stupid. But my Dad wasn't going to spend (converted to AUD) $1120 on a high end radio. For $391 including a camera it is a worthwhile upgrade. Edit: Hang on a second, did I see you watch the skid factory?

Great to see someone not just hacking up the dash. Glad you sprayed the panel with black matt. Just grab some convoluted tubing for that extra cable. Please tell me your not running 20 amps thru that switch? Just run a relay man and fuse it. Also did you use 240v cable??? Use DC trailer multi core cable, its good so you can run multiple things and its all wrapped. I second the fact that those sony headunits are a total piece of garbage. JVC used to make some great units, but theres not many other decent options now. The sound processing and filtering in those junky ebay radios is horrendous, you wont notice unless your car has decent speakers etc. But they are good enough if youve got an old car.
