I found this prehistoric creature in the rock over 10 years ago, but I had to make a lot more discoveries before I could bring it home! In this video I navigate the unique challenges of electroplating a complex 3D printed fossil.
If you'd like to learn more about electroplating, check out some of the other awesome KZfaq channels that I learned from!

The creature itself is definitely what I get the most excited about, but since this has mainly been a crafting channel, I wasn't sure if people would like it if I took a hard left off into the land of functional anatomy and paleontology! I'm thrilled to know there's interest though, so you can expect to see more content on this critter in coming months!

@@ingeniusdesigns Maybe you could collab with Kayakasaurus? I’m sure their viewers would love to see info from an expert about a fossil and it would give you both a chance to build a really cool diorama! It would probably be a good boost for your channel!

I tried electroplating years ago. Didn't go well. I suspect I was doing it backwards because one of the few things I remember was "negative etches, positive plates". I think I need to take another stab at it.

@@ingeniusdesigns Here's the thing, you do. Remember that silver mirror experiment from school? Where they coat a flask or bottle in silver? That silver is very thin, but very conductive. And with some tweaks to the chemistry you can coat almost anything in metal, including 3d prints and any plastic, trees, acorns, your fingers, you name it. 50g of silver nitrate is the most expensive reagent and will last you until you get bored. It's nowhere near as expensive as gold, it's quite affordable. If you just want to be done with this project i get it, but if you want to play King Midas for real, I'm the internet rando for you.
@ingeniusdesigns

Sounds awesome! I had heard of using silver conductive paint, but couldn't afford it. The other thing I thought you might mean when I read your initial comment was infusing particulate silver into the resin during 3D printing--another alternative that I discounted as not cost or time effective and likely to screw up my print curing. I hadn't considered silver nitrate. Although as you mentioned I'm currently satisfied with the state of this project, I'm certainly not done electroplating and the idea of upgrading with silver on future projects seems really cool!
@6alecapristrudel
@6alecapristrudel Жыл бұрын
Yeah, silver paint is kinda expensive for how small the bottles are and is still paint. I'm talking about a solution that plates pure silver onto anything it touches in like 10 min. Like electroplating, but without the wires. You still need to plate it with thick metal afterward, cause it's so thin it rubs off lol. But it plates stuff that's hard to paint and preserves the surface detail. I can still see the layers of a print after I'm done coppering it. It doesn't take hours for the copper to grow across the surface. It takes minutes. Anyway, if you ever feel like trying it, hit up this comment section again lol.
@ingeniusdesigns

I sure will. Silver is among the most conductive things out there and this technique sounds like the ideal way to deal with a lot of the problems I ended up jimmy rigging in this video. It may be a couple of months before I'm working on another electroplating project, but I'll hit you up for advice when that time comes!
