Turning Red is a 2022 American animated coming-of-age fantasy comedy-drama film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. It was directed by Domee Shi (in her feature directorial debut) and produced by Lindsey Collins, from a screenplay written by Shi and Julia Cho, and a story by Shi, Cho, and Sarah Streicher. The film marks the first Pixar feature film solely directed by a woman. It stars the voices of Rosalie Chiang, Sandra Oh, Ava Morse, Hyein Park, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Orion Lee, Wai Ching Ho, Tristan Allerick Chen, and James Hong. Set in Toronto, Ontario in 2002, the film follows Meilin "Mei" Lee (Chiang), a 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian student who transforms into a giant red panda when she experiences any strong emotion, due to a hereditary curse.

This movie gets too much hate. I do understand why some may not like it, especially for guys. It can be cringe and uncomfortable to watch. The whole movie is about a middle aged girl going through changes. The movie isn’t for everybody. I personally I like it and I’m a grown straight guy who understands that it’s meant to be cringey and uncomfortable because it’s about a 13 year old girl, a weird transition in life. Growing up I was a weird kid who had niche interests and would hang around with girls. Im not gay but I was more comfortable hanging around girls because they mostly understood me. I was bullied by boys due to having a learning disability.

It’s a niche type of movie. Most of the hates comes from guys. I do understand the sentiment because they can’t relate a lot of things, and can be really weird and uncomfortable to watch. I’m a guy and really enjoy this movie very much. Then again, I’m weird and always was growing up😅

Mostly just dudes who don't wanna acknowledge that girls can be hecking WEIRD just like them and I say weird as a positive. Also periods are still treated as a big sexual taboo so guys are just "ew icky" unless they grew up together with sisters.

The reason is that not everyone can relate to this movie, 45% knows what it is to be a woman and go through this, 45% are boys that can't relate at all and they feel excluded, and the last 10% are so confused as to whom to be offended that they end up hating everyone and themselves for not being able to relate to any of them. Not to get too heavy in a KZfaq comment or anything, but my mom died a few years ago. I spoke with her on the phone the day before she went into a coma she wouldn't wake up from, and I was telling her I felt guilty that I left home, leaving her behind to deal with her health issues without my support. She told me that she never wanted me to stay there forever, and that she was so proud of me for striking out on my own and making my way independently in life. Hearing those words as some of her last made grieving her much more bearable, and the line in this movie reminds me of that. This movie is truly beautiful and can stir up intense emotions, and it deserves a lot of love.

No cause as a trans guy with a transphobic/homophobic mom, the whole end sequence where Mei Mei says "I'm changing, and I'm scared it'll take me away from you." And then her mother says "the farther you go, the prouder I'll be" RUINED ME. This movie is so damn important, for parents and children. The backlash this film got from parents claiming it's teaching kids that their parents are bad and don't have their best interest in mind are wild, especially with that ending, where Mei Mei's mom does exactly what's best for Mei Mei, they just don't want their kids thinking they can be their own individual people. I wanna watch this with my mom so bad but I know there's no way I'd get through it without just breaking down lmao. This movie is so important, man. So important.
@bettrhalf8006
@bettrhalf8006 2 күн бұрын
It's terribly frustrating that the parents lashing out are the ones that really need the lesson at the end. Mei's mom facing her own past trauma and healing some of her own scars helped her step back from scarring Mei, and seeing that even though the path her and her daughter took may be wildly different, they can still exist and run together. I'm terribly, terribly sorry that your mother is not there for you. I do hope eventually the scales will fall from her eyes. In the meantime, I hope that you will hold on to who you are, and that you have or will quickly find and build a family out of the people around you that love you for you, and that their support can help to lessen the absence of a parent's approval.

Due to my upbringing and who I am, this movie always makes me cry. The bit with Ming breaking down because of how she was raised and her resentment towards her mother but also the guilt of hurting her, because she loves her mother, hits close to home. And especially since Ming's mum does seem to love her, and want the best for her. She's not good at showing it, nor is she going about it in the right way, but her intention is always to do what's best for Ming. Ming is the same. And it really hurts to think that being who you are will hurt those you love.

i just took a whole class on like adolescence and the stresses that come with puberty and i really think turning red is also such a good depiction of the stress of puberty, transitioning into your own self and identity while also feeling embarrassed about change. like it’s so well done!! so glad you liked it!!

I think ‘inside out 2’ did better job with doing a general understanding of puberty and the psychological effects that comes with it. “Turning Red” is about the physical changes of puberty but you have to be a girl to truly understand what Mei is going through, through her Red Panda transformation to relate because guys goes through puberty differently. Im a guy and only can relate to the 2000s setting and what was like having fun with friends during middle school! I guess the crushes also can relate with boys but with the opposite sex or if you’re gay, boys I guess. I got hit many times during middle school by girls. Let me tell you, middle girls don’t hide their feelings well. They can be overly excited and over dramatic with their reactions from seeing a boy that’s attractive to them “Oh my God you’re so cute”! So this movie betrays that perfectly.

I love this movie! I’m a grown man and I have no shame to say that I really enjoyed the movie and the early 2000s setting really gives me nostalgia despite the movie coming out a few years ago.’Turning Red’ might not be the deepest of the Pixar’s movies but there’s nothing wrong with that. The simple slice of life story of a girl having fun with her friends and struggles of growing up and changing through her red panda is nice. Sometimes we need a break and just watch simple relatable story. I can’t relate much with the changes that comes with puberty and the boy band obsession because I’m a guy but I can relate to some things in a way. Also don’t tell me the ending with Mei’s mother isn’t emotional 😭

Technically Max is 15 or 16 so he’s older but similar plot of teen-parent angst and is also a fantastic movie. I think both are perfect bookends of each other- Turning Red’s crew grew up with Goofy Movie and said “we need a girl version of this!! This movie makes me cry though it all because I remember the feeling of starting to find out that if i were to be really me, I would disappoint my family. I was not gonna be the daughter they wanted, because turns out I'm not a daughter at all. And having the courage to find out who you are and defend who you are to the people you love is absolutely terrifying. The way Meimei always punishes herself by slapping and hurting herself out of fear and guilt and shame hurts me too. So I think that accepting the panda is accepting yourself, and everytime you do it, gets harder to be what you were before. Meimei is the first in the family to do it :( her mom also couldn't be herself. Like you said, generational trauma.

I'm so happy this movie exists, man. Young boys and girls can watch it and feel seen. I definitely feel like my younger self would've been obsessed by the cute style and story. I feel seen, too. This movie and Barbie definitely speak to the girl/woman experience.

So much fuuuun !!! Love this movie and your reaction ! If you continue the animation route, especially with you talking about the evolution of animation, Blue Eye Samouraï would be AMAZING. It’s a Netflix animated series and really took my breath away visually, with its story and characters. No pressure of course, do whatever you like but I really recommend it ❤ love of love for you and your work. LOVE your editing ! Excited to see what you do next 🫶

Turning Red wasn't a movie that grabbed me like Encanto did, even though they had similar themes. That being said, it's still a great movie and I'm very glad it exists, especially since a lot of people can identify with it. We need more movies that are diverse and tell personal stories.

I love this movie as a true 90s girls vibe. Since it takes place in 2002, Mei is 13.. I would have been 12 so I can attest, tween girl 100%. Especially with the boy band boys.
