This week I decided to do some turning. I made 3 mallets on the new lathe. The mallets were made from Spalted Hickory, Walnut & Ash, and Walnut and Red Oak.
I made thse mallets to give away to two great friends who have helped me every step of the way while I begin my Turning Journey.
Robert Blanford & Richard Morley are New to the KZfaq Scene and I strongly recommend you check out their channels and subscribe. Their videos are informative and helpful. And they are two great guys!

I used a hand plane to level one side of the block, followed by a belt sander (since I dont have a jointer) this gave me a clean edge to run on my tablesaw to cut the block down to final size. basically I was removing glue squeeze out and flushing up the side. I used the table saw after this step, I do use my dust mask when working with the lathe, also when i work with spalted wood.

Great video as always, different approach to repairing, go to Home Depots key department, ask for the shavings, you can get half a cup at a time there as they never clean out the container. Soak the crack with thin CA , jam in the shavings and continue to soak in the CA, sand and your good to go, stronger than wood

I don't know Richard, I'm kind of loving the Walnut accent with the Ash. Mine might just be a little more incredible than yours. :^) You are right, we are very lucky to be receiving these mauls. Thank you Laney.

Beautiful work, as usual! All 3 mauls look outstanding! The spalted hickory definitely is worth trying to fix up. Roberts and Richards mauls almost look too good to use! LOL! Well done!

Cool stuff. I've made a few small mallets but I haven't turned anything this large yet. Waiting for parts to a newly acquired shopsmith and I'll be turning larger pieces shortly wewt! Anyway, great video. Looking forward to more. Subbed.

Excellent Job on the video Laney, all three mallets look great! I hope you do take the time to make a repair video as I think that would be very beneficial to a lot of people.

Nice video. Good work! In my neck of the woods, though, That pattern was always referred to, by the old-timers, as a MAUL, The mallets they referred to were 2 separate piece, a handle & head. Either way, a rose by any other name............... Nice job, you're the expert.

Laney, love the work you do! Thanks for the videos :) You have taught me much in my learning curve to becoming a skilled woodworker! I just did splines for the first time on a box, and am wondering if it wouldn't be easy to repair it with that idea... so like a jig that holds the mallet to be run over the table saw, then a spline glued in to fit.

I LOVE this video. I enjoyed watching it several times. It's awesome how I get to see your work in progress. I love seeing the mallets on the lathe as they stop turning - suddenly you can see the color and pattern on them. Gorgeous. Questions: why did you hand-plane down Robert's blank? Couldn't you have used the table saw? And also do you always use that mask when turning? And when sanding? The wire burning is SO COOL! Gorgeous work. I love the ash and the spalted hickory. Great work! :-)

I just finished turning my first mallet, and it turned out pretty good. Believe it or not, I used a piece of silver maple off of my firewood pile. Please keep posting your lathe videos, I really like your work, and appreciate the ideas.

Laminating wood for turning requires all pieces of wood be 1) the same Moisture content and 2) they be reasonably dry such as 6-8% EMC 3) Joints need to be perfect and the glue needs to cure well. A heat gun will not work and it may eve ruin what you have. I would leave it totally alone and set it on an open shelf for a while longer and see if it opens up more. If the other pieces of wood also dry our more you may have more glue line failures, you may have to slice it open, joint and re-glue.

Laney ... I'm not trying to be the safety police, but when you burn accent lines, the wire should be connected to handles (some guys use golf balls, I use dowels). If you hit a snag, you want to be holding on to something that won't injure your hands.

Was that a wire you used to create the groove? Also, do you finish and wax while it is on the lathe? Or do you take it off to do that? Thanks!
