With my simple pvc hoops, I can turn my Raised Bed into a Mini Greenhouse in just a few minutes! I leave my hoops up year-round, by covering with Greenhouse Poly, Row Cover or Shade Cloth, I get maximum use out of the limited space of my Raised Beds. Do you have hoops on your beds?

Was just recommended your channel. I love it! Great setup with the giant raised bed. I’m doing something similar with shredded leaves. I have one tunnel over my bed with greens. The rest of the beds have cover crops and leaves. Cheers!

Thks for the inspiration and encouragement about hoop house. I grow winter lettuce/spinach/kale in big plastic tubs that have drain holes. I use strong 💪 branches in a teepee ⛺️ form to wrap triple layer shower curtains around each tub. etc. These tubs sit against a sunny South wall in winter. In future I will expand and create the hoop house thing. So glad to see ur video! I subscribed. Ahna Atlanta/USA

I like your little blocks to hold the hoop good idea if you have a wood surround, I use similar clips to hold my net in place from the plumbing section of our hardware store an out half the length of yours. I may try the poly as we’re having an awful start to our summer here in Tasmania. Thanks

Thanks. I built these a few years ago and don't have any video. I have lots of still pics and I have a similar design, 4'x8'x28", that I sold locally. I think I could weave still pics into a video. Let me work on that.

good information, however, i dont think it was mentioned the mil of the plastic, and a range of length for the hoops, and how did you begin with the hoops , did they bend ok when they were new?
@raisedbedrebels
@raisedbedrebels 10 ай бұрын
The plastic is 6mil greenhouse poly, pretty typical. The pvc comes in 10' lengths and was very easy to bend when new. I just flexed the pvc over the bed until I got the radius I liked and cut to size. My beds are 4' wide, I cut the pvc to 7' and that works good for me. Hope this answers your questions.

Securing the cover is a deal breaker in the country like me! Do you remember details for your 1/2 inch clip deal-ios?
@raisedbedrebels

The pvc is 1/2". On Amazon, if you search "row cover clips" you'll find lots of options.

Kristal, you can pretty easily make your own if you like. Cut some little rings from a piece of 3/4" pvc pipe, maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide. I use a miter saw. Then, using a pair of wire cutters, cut away about a third of the ring. They fit nicely over the 1/2" pvc and do a good job of holding the plastic on.

Love your method of covering your beds. What is the length of the pvc pipes?
@raisedbedrebels
@raisedbedrebels Жыл бұрын
Thanks. The PVC is 7'. My beds are 4' wide. PVC commonly comes in 10' lengths, I just flexed a 10-footer over my bed until I got the radius I liked, turns out that was 7'.

Bob, how did you make the front and back end things---is it a type of mesh like rabbit caging? I'd like to know how to put it together with the right materials. Does this help with airflow in the winter? I am going to make the hoops for this fall. Thank you for the video.

The ends are framed from 2x4's with plastic from an old greenhouse stapled to it. Also has rebar mesh attached to the frame. I made these so long ago, I forgot why I put the rebar on...I'm sure it made sense then! My beds are 4' wide, the1/2" pvc typically comes in 10' lengths. I just flexed a 10' length over my bed until I got the radius I liked, that is 7'

@@raisedbedrebels Thank you. So the idea is to have it completely airtight?
@raisedbedrebels
@raisedbedrebels 2 ай бұрын
@@kristenridge4088 oh, it's far from air tight. The poly helps generate heat when the sun is out and hold the heat as the sun sets. I get the most use from the poly as season extenders...both in the fall and spring.

Thank you! I am in central Utah. I was thinking of trying to grow leafy greens through the winter, with hoops and poly, but would that be unsuccessful? Maybe I should aim for just an extension of the fall as you said.
@raisedbedrebels
@raisedbedrebels 2 ай бұрын
@@kristenridge4088 I'm in SW Ohio, so we have real winter. What I've found most important for growing year round using the poly, is, plant selection. Choose cold hardy plants...kale, spinach, carrots, lettuce and the like. If the plants are established late fall, they likely will over winter. You might not harvest during the coldest part of the winter, but the plants will survive and be ready for a super early harvest. It's a trial and error but well worth it.

Does this keep squirrels and other critters out? Thanks for sharing.
@raisedbedrebels
@raisedbedrebels 11 ай бұрын
That's not my intended use but, I suppose it can offer some deterrent. The hoops are sturdy enough to hold a hardware mesh that might keep squirrels out better then poly or shade cloth.
