Kewl idea. Just a suggestion. I was part owner of a construction company in Florida, where it rains every day at noon just about. When you'r4e using visqueen, which is the plastic you're using here, take the 1x2 and roll it underneath the visqueen a few times then pull that tight when you've removed enough slack. That does a couple things. This will remove a lot of the moisture seepage, keep the wood from rotting and create an even better barrier for pests. Another trick is to use two 1x2's and loop the visqueen under the first 1x2 and over the second. That would allow you to more easily make adjustments and it braces the plastic between two breaks creating an even distribution for the plastic to be held making it much less likely to expand at the screws and tear. Another thing you can do is add a small lip with an overhang of the plastic using 1x4 strips on the three sides that don't have hinges. That will create a better run off and keep the wood under the plastic from rotting for much longer. Simple tricks to make your building last longer. Hope this helps a bit man! 😁

I saw a great idea on another hoop house video:. Install an extra handle on the raised bed below the handle for the hinged top. That way if it's windy, you can loop a bungy cord through to keep closed (or to keep critters out).

I've been avoiding watching this video for a couple weeks as it keeps showing up in my youtube recommendations. Afterall, how difficult is it to build a PVC hoop cover for a raised bed? Nothing to it and who needs a video? Boy, am I glad I finally took the time to watch. It's a great video and demonstrates a simple, reliable, way to accomplish the task - far better than I would have done trying to rig something up on the fly,. Thank you!

How’s the temperature inside the greenhouse? I’m trying to grow year round. Do I have to wait for the right season or can I use the greenhouse and manipulate the environment???

@@neilanderson7147 Most years we can grow from mid March till the end of October I’m the greenhouse. This year we had rain just about everyday for two months and hardly anything grew well inside and out except celery, cabbage and lettuce.

Well done! When I did this a few years back I learned that even with our moderate temps in Oregon, we don't get enough sun. Now that the weather patterns have changed, I might just try this again.

This brings back so many beautiful memories with my grandma when we had raised beds and we used old window instead of the plastics and we did use that types of plastic on the sides. Thank you I have a good place to place a garden but have not had anything to give me incentive until now.

Dear James, Your presentation and instructions on how to make a "Hoop House" are clear, concise, informative, very useful and user friendly. Excellent job, young man. Simply wonderful! I built this on one of my raised beds ( I did the single layer, I will install the second one next year) I love how it extended the grow season in the fall last year... I have garlic over wintering in there now!!! We Love it and thanks for all your great ideas and help!!!

James after watching several videos, this was the best hoop house tutorial. Im a female but i feel empowered by your video to construct this hoop house. The only thing I think I want to do different is use material covering that is breathable, and allows for air, sunshine, and rain to get through, yet still protect against critters and pests. A million thanks. Your videos are high quality and pleasant to watch due to great video editing.

WOW, this is the best hoop house video I have ever seen. I am 64 year old grandmother and will be making the box and the hoop house this weekend. You are such a great teacher. Wish me luck. Thank you for all the tips and tricks! I'm from Belgium so i do live in another climate zone, but i Learn so much from you! I just finished my first raised bed and got the pvc pipes from the store yesterday. Lets go make that hoop! 🤩 I did not find the T-pieces or the closed caps, but i'm gonne try to drill a hole in the frame itself and glue it with some woodglue. Its not too windy where i place it and i hope the plastic will also help to keep the frame in place. It' a trial and error proces i suppose, but i'm having so much fun with it! Thank you and keep up the fantastic work! 🤩

Great instructional. If you want something with a little more UV resistance than the white PVC, PVC conduit (gray) is rated for exterior use and will not get brittle as quick with seasons of exposure.

Great video! Great instructions! I plan on using this to make a netted hoop house for my two strawberry raised beds to keep out critters, deer and birds. Too windy where I live for the traditional plastic hoop. Zone 5, SE Wisconsin. Keep the videos coming!

Great job, James and Tuck! I have made several of these this past fall using a "cathedral" shape (think two parallel uprights with a triangle shaped roof - 4 pieces of pvc) as I live in Michigan and this cathedral shape does a great job shedding snow. I'm still harvesting lettuce, spinach, swiss chard, mache and beet tops in my zone 6 garden and it's almost January! Keep 'em coming guys!

Here I am again 1 day after winter solstice and I’m waiting for spring again so I can get back in the garden and try it once again. Last year’s garden didn’t do well. Hoping for better luck in 2020.

Thank you for the detailed plans! Just built one today and I'm using netting to protect my fall cabbage plants. After I harvest those I will swap the netting for visqueen for winter plants.

Will be doing some this year. I’m going to put the straps at the ends for high wind, but for the prop post, I’ll have to where it attaches to the lid on one end and to the box on the other -so it doesn’t fall when the wind moves the lid. Or maybe have three props that attaches: the middle prop to hold lid up while putting the outside props up and down. I really like your design; it’s really straightforward, and one person -friendly.👍

True Star if you make the straps that hold it open so the lid opens further you won’t need the prop sticks, gravity will hold it open. Also screwing the hinges into the end grain of the 2x4s eventually the screws will just pull out of the end grain, you want the screws into the side grain of the 2x4 less likely to become stripped out. Annnnnnnd you can add a hook and eye closure so you don’t have to worry about wind lifting it open or rodents getting in. PVC glue for the hoop frame wouldn’t hurt either. And when building the frame I would recommend using a Kreg jig and pocket screwing the frame together.....ohhhh and I would also recommend using more than just the 2 hinges. The design as it is with the style hinge he showed you could add many more. I would advise at least 3 more.

I was thinking exactly the same about the prop which will fall when wind blows further then lid slam down. Other wise great video. Yes 2nd layer video would be cool.

Saw your post sometimes you might beable to uses bent metal pipes instead of plastic pvc if your willing to spend a little more and the frame will be more structurally sound. The plastic comes in tons of different strengths but i imagine you need to consider how much lighting can come in. Because if its strong with no lighting penetration then you would have to switch out with different plastic. Not experienced as this guy but i have good ideas take them with a grain of salt, do your own research. Best of luck.

@@jessechase7033 An additional hinge in the middle could be beneficial. Any more than that is overkill. It's only purpose is to keep the 2x4 from bowing over time. The hinges don't hold any weight so any additional hinges are merely to keep that side of the frame straight.
