Damn (stylized as DAMN.) is the fourth studio album by American rapper Kendrick Lamar. It was released on April 14, 2017, through Top Dawg Entertainment, Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records.
The album features production from a variety of record producers, including executive producer and Top Dawg Entertainment label-head Anthony "Top Dawg" Tiffith, Sounwave, DJ Dahi, Mike Will Made It, and Ricci Riera; as well as further production contributions from James Blake, Steve Lacy, BadBadNotGood, Greg Kurstin, The Alchemist, and 9th Wonder, among others. Damn features appearances from singers Rihanna and Top Dawg singer Zacari, along with Irish rock band U2.
Damn received widespread critical acclaim and topped the US Billboard 200 with 603,000 album-equivalent units earned in its first week. It also topped the chart of Canada while reaching number two in Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. It was supported by three official singles: "Humble", "Loyalty", and "Love", the first of which became Lamar's first number-one single on the US Billboard Hot 100 as a lead artist. Damn was certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in May 2018 and was also the Billboard Year-End number one album of 2017.
Damn topped The Village Voice's Pazz & Jop critics poll and was named one of the best albums of 2017 and the decade by several other publications. It became the first non-jazz or classical work to earn a Pulitzer Prize for Music and won Best Rap Album at the 2018 Grammy Awards, as well receiving a nomination for Album of the Year at the ceremony. In 2020, the album was ranked 175th on Rolling Stone's updated list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Fun fact: This album tells two stories in one. If u listen to BLOOD. To DUCKWORTH. It tells us a story about Kendrick going from wicked to a sane man but he dies either way to a gunshot. But if u listen to DUCKWORTH. To BLOOD. It tells us that Kendrick went from sane to wicked and died either way but it was more impactful since his name gets dragged across the mud by the media after his death.

The normal album is the path to wickedness. This was the path where anthony killed ducky and kendrick grew up without a father. He dies in a gunfight from lack of his father’s teachings. Backwards he takes the path of weakness. Anthony let ducky live and kendrick grew up with a great upbringing. He dies in blood anyway due to his hospitality. You choose how he dies. “Damned if i do, Damned if i dont.”

I love the little nuances like Conner snickering when LUST started, he just knew his dad was going to love what was coming next. Such a special relationship. I can’t do this with my father, because of how he is but I can’t want to have this kinda relationship with my kid whenever that happens

Kendrick won a Pulitzer price for literature (or poetry or both) with this album. The only music of any genre in history to ever win a Pulitzer price, ever. None before, none after and none ever will. It was certainly unique for a rapper or any musician to win an international award for literature and poetry. He is undoubtedly the best rap artist and rapper, unafraid to call out the black community and the pervasive racism and injustice of the system. That’s why he is often maligned by his own community and applauded by others who sees no colour and thus able to appreciate the truthfulness and unbiased sincerity of his message. Honestly, you never get to appreciate any of Kendrick’s albums on first listening and you need to be able to understand that he’s rhymes are lit but not easily understood from easy listening. You need to be intentional and smart enough to appreciate the nuances and subtlety of his songs. He is a generational talent.

@@PICKLEEEJUICE not surprised about that. A Pulitzer price is more for achievements in the field of education, especially literature, writing or journalism, drama. It is probably the most coveted awards in these fields of academia. The Oscars meanwhile is basically a Film and Cinematic Award. If you ask me personally, i think the Pulitzer award is much more valuable. Maybe that’s why Kendrick’s music has been added to the educational curriculum in some universities? I would think so

@@coolpandas8375 you acting like Eminem’s writing has nothing to do literature He’s known for using 5500+ different English words in his catalogue, WAY more than any other rapper/artist of all time He also had a word/term added in the dictionary and his songs have been hella studied Winning an Oscar for a rap song is much much more difficult than winning a Pulitzer Prize for an album

My 55 year old dad just randomly yells "bitch im the sandman!" And my "left stroke just went viral" all the time lol. The odd time he will come at me with the "holla bitch". Bonding with a parent over music is great and very special. He raised me on metal and rock from the 70s-80s and its my favorite music still.

I remember this album dropping while I was at Coachella in 2017 & Kendrick was headlining that weekend. Everybody in the campgrounds blasting the album after it’d just dropped.. trying to learn every word. Somehow found myself at the rail right in front of Kung-Fu Kenny himself. One of the greatest nights of my life & such a special album to me.

The structure of this album is also very cool. you have FEEL before LOYALTY, PRIDE before HUMBLE, LUST before LOVE, and the most important to the album imo, FEAR before GOD. this makes the deluxe version so much cooler because the album has a totally different feel front to back. every time i watch these videos i remember that i was listening to these albums HEAVY in like high school and haven’t listened to them much since. so the lyrics are just coming to me while also getting the feel of listening for the first time since it’s been so long. Personally my least favourite kendrick album, by quite a bit. I actually find it to be kinda grossly overrated. That said, kendrick’s talent is undeniable and he really is one of the all time best

What I like about LUST. is the inflections of male vs. female, the drums are incredible too & all-round a really trippy, catchy track! In an old relationship I was in, whenever my ex said "I need some water", I'd sing the chorus of this song hahaha

Kendrick is an artist who I knew of mainly from the black Panther soundtrack and just heading his radio singles, and you guys doing this album is what finally made me say “fuck it” and did an entire dive into his discography and man, was I ROBBING myself. Thanks for the push.

This album, while I still believe the other albums are better, is the most nostalgic to me. It’s the only one I remember dropping and feeling the anticipation build up. I was like 14 when it first released. Edit: Also so glad you loved FEEL. it’s so good, a top Kendrick song for me

Lost my dad back in September of 2021 and we had a similar musical relationship, always showing eachother new music (mostly hip hop ) and enjoying it together. Appreciate the sound staging you included from the tracks to help listeners remember. DAMN really expresses duality to me with each track having contrary elements from one to the next be it the song titles or the composition or in theme. For example, HUMBLE he is demanding humility from others while being so bragadocious himself or that a song so in your face and bopping is titled HUMBLE. Also, I still remember when it came out and fans were speculating a second album within three days as a kind response or something. Idk, can't remember the reasoning now but the hype and deep dives were immediate. Also also, the music videos made for some of the songs take the interpretations to another level and they're good supplementary material.

Man Connor I have to give kudos to the editing. You hit all my favourite parts in the songs. It is essential to cut parts of the tracks to speed up the video but you do it very well and hit all the key parts which must be difficult to juggle Love you guys and thanks for doing one of my favourite albums. Damn was my first hip hop album I actually fully delved deep into, it came out in 2017 when I was working my paper round 6 days a week and it was the perfect length from when I left my house to when I got back, I literally listened to it everyday and can still recite most of the lyrics to this day! This album means a lot to me and loved seeing your reaction! Keep up the great videos!

@@nolanfarrell1767 there were rumors right after the release of DAMN that another Kendrick album was coming soon, sorta surprise release and entire new album. Timed had passed and the hype was dying down, until someone had a theory. That DAMN was also an album you could play in backwards order and it was still narratively correct. Thus, that was the second album.
