Skinty Fia is the third studio album by Irish rock band Fontaines D.C. It was released on 22 April 2022 via Partisan Records. Like the band's two previous albums - 2019's Dogrel and 2020's A Hero's Death - Skinty Fia was produced by Dan Carey. Its title refers to an old Irish saying that drummer Tom Coll’s great-aunt used to say. The phrase "Skinty Fia" translates to "the damnation of the deer". Both the title and the cover art allude to the extinct Irish elk, also known as the "giant deer". Skinty Fia became the band's first number-one album in both Ireland and the UK.

My favourite line in the album is "about the gall of Fine Gael and the fail of Fianna Fáil". Beautiful wordplay. Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil are the two leading political parties in the Republic of Ireland. Both are centre-right parties.
@shuheihisagi6689
@shuheihisagi6689 Жыл бұрын
What does being centre-right have to do with it? They are the dominate parties for a reason. They were the parties that pioneered the protection of the Irish language and culture. They were both originally apart of the political party Sinn Féin that won Ireland's freedom. And these parties started as socalist parties that were meant to uplift the lower working class, and disempower the rich. In the past 60 years, Fianna Fail has become more and more corporatist, and overzealously catholic. Since the troubles they have fumbled the ball and are causing more problems than they solved. Thats what I think the lyrics are talking about.

@@shuheihisagi6689 Great comment! Yes I didn't mean anything by it, I always just highlight this to people from two-party countries such as the USA because a lot of people don't understand it's not always left v right, didn't mean anything more than that.
@hairsstandonend
@hairsstandonend 11 ай бұрын
Centre-right according to what? They've created a social welfare state run by an oligopoly of property owners reminiscent of the days of English lords. They'd be socialist in the US, where they are on the scale of left vs right is irrelevant, it's their greed that's the issue. Celtic Tiger trash. But yeah, superb wordplay!

Watched this band two times this year, and gotta tell you the feelings and the intensity you felt in the album grows exponentially hearing them live. Grian's performance in the long verse of I Love You gives you increasing goosebumps with each line, and his body language adds up to a heart wrenching experience. Also seeing Kevin relates to the conceptual side of this album bringing up the story about his Irish friend, is exactly what this album is about, the people that needs to leave Ireland for the terrible conditions and feel uncomfortable in another country like the deer on the cover. I love the album, I love the band and also love this channel for creating such unique listening experiences.

Do Bon Iver's "For Emma, Forever Ago"! Curious how your dad will like the soft acoustic intimate sound as opposed to the more robotic feel of 22, A Million. He mentioned in that video that he found Justin Vernons raw vocals powerful, and that album essentially rests on his vocals and guitar.

Me too. Very convoluted way I got in to them. I was aware of the name but never heard them. My team bought a player from Bohs, so looked at that team. Saw and bought that beauty from a year or so ago with the bands name emblazoned on the front, so delved in and absolutely loved what I heard. Bought rhe back catalogue, caught them on the Glasto coverage and got tickets for one of their Manchester shows earlier this year. Absolutely astonishing band. My favourite new band for a while. Just wish I'd looked them up earlier. In retrospect, their debut album is one of the finest I've heard for ages, really set the tone for what they've rapidly become. A very important band.

This episode was deadly. Loved the chat about the old friends that stayed. It's such an Irish thing to start chatting about a memory that is sparked by music or a line and it's mad to think that Fontaines music does that to people in Canada. Best album of 2022, I was really lucky to have this vinyl signed by all the band members in the San Diego gig, awesome video I was really looking forward for this reaction!

I've seen Fontaines DC live 3 times this year in Copenhagen and London (Finsbury Park & Hammersmith Apollo) and will definitely be going again! If you think the album is great, they take it next level live - the atmosphere is completely electric no matter the size of the crowd, if you're in a hall or festival in a park.

So great to see you covering probably Ireland's best band right now. The scene pretty much died over the years, and though there are a few bands around that aren't getting the recognition they deserve, these guys are blowing up. Never thought they'd get on this show though. Appreciate it!

When are we getting that Black Midi? My dad loved it, so I'm curious what Kevin thinks. I just wanna see him react to the drumming!

Thanks for doing this Connor and Kev. I’m no where near Dublin City being from rural cork, but Fontaines are pure unreal. First heard about then when I was around ten from boys in the better land being a big hit here. I’m a tad older now and they’re a band I’ll always have a great time listening to. I think ye should listen to the makaveli album next. Class album
